Keeping away holiday weekend lbs.
It's Labor Day weekend here in the US and we're going camping at the coast 4 days, 3 nights. That is a lot of s'mores and dutch oven dump cakes! I'm going shopping a little later. Anyone have any suggestions for how to buy things that *at least* won't make me gain? What exercise other than our inevitable hikes can I fit in while camping?

I am going to a big picnic my friends throw every year and this is what i am doing. I am brining food that is a healthier version of something we would normally eat (ex http://www.hungry-girl.com/chew/chewdetails.p hp?isid=1520 and then rather then burgers I'm brining chicken burgers and low fat cheese).
As for sweets, its really great to bring something that you would enjoy just as much as the bad stuff, only know that its not bad for you. I know someone is making cupcakes. So i am making whole wheat apple muffins. still sweet and yummy only not high in calories and bad carbs.
Good luck stay strong !
Good luck- we can do this and let's come back on Tuesday with success stories!! :)
oooh, can i join u all?? we do a Labour Day neighbourhood bbq, about 3 years now. In the past i scarfed down whatever crossed my path cause i was mingling and chatting and everyone was eating. This year the leaner, sexier ME has to take care. I can't ignore the food cause the bbq-ing takes place on my driveway! I will however make sure i eat a healthy breakfast as usual and, since its at my house, i can access the healthy snacks. I will probably allow myself one burger for the day (as opposed to the 2 i would normally have!!) at lunch and perhaps a piece of chicken round dinner time. Lots of salad, lots of water....and back on track Tuesday morning!! See ya then, and good luck everybody!!!
I'm so nervous about Labor Day weekend, BIG dinner party on Saturday night, going out for breakfast on Sunday then after that a huge cookout.......I think I'll do ok but it's buggin me out at the moment.
this past weekend was like that for me j9gwen. Sat we had a friend's bbq, at 3, then at 5:30 we had an anniversary party to attend. then on sunday another anniversary party. Before each party i drank lots of water (i always travel with a bottle of it so i can fill up in the car), and drank lots when i got there. filled up on a veggies and some meat, stayed away from bread. sometimes i'l have a hamburger patty with some salad on the side to avoid the cals in the bun. and give yourself a treat. Its a holiday after all. like share a slice of cake instead of having a piece by yourself..
Thanks belladonna69, I'll keep the water on hand and maybe chill out about the whole thing a little bit
Keep protein filled snacks on hand... nuts, granola bars, etc. You'll probably burn a lot of calories since I presume you'll be hiking, swimming, fishing, etc. but just try to fill up on healthier snacks so you're more likely/able/willing to limit your treats. Maybe 1 or 2 nights just have two or three roasted marshmallows and only have the s'mores one night. A camping favorite we always made (the first night so it kept well in the cooler) was boneless chicken breasts and baked potatoes. My friend would butter the chicken and roll them in crushed potato chips (preferably Doritos!). Not the healthiest choice but the protein in the chicken would fill you nicely and potatoes are great if you aren't loading them with unhealthy things. Season them with loads of salt, pepper, and other spices.
Have fun!!
OK, well I'm back from shopping with mixed results. I found some really lean turkey dogs to replace the hot dogs with, I got ground turkey to replace the ground beef for my dutch oven dinner with brown rice and veggies, applesauce to top the pancakes, I grabbed mini watermelon instead of chips....then I got chips anyway, I got s'mores fixings and things to make peach cobbler with ice cream...whoops. Also I found some banana split oreos, wth?? I had to grab a bag. I am making a pact with myself that I'll only eat 1...2...3...no 2, TWO!
Good luck to everyone this weekend. If you happen to be at the Oregon coast and you see a woman running up and down the sand dunes with a wild look of desperation and Oreo crumbs on her face please wave hello, that's me.
right on e'bear, you really did your homework! best of luck to all of you! see ya on Tuesday!
OH! and dont forget to keep the alcohol to a bare minimum, ladies!!!
speaking of holidays and alcohol,
I ended up going out with friends for the first time and had red wine but didn't stop with that also went for some hot chicken wings....okay didn't eat it alone but today I went on the scale and 1 pound goes on this sexy body of mine...
Well, at least I didn't cheat and wrote down exactly what I ate and didn't try and make it look like it was my own metabolism that made me gain. :)
LOL
so today is a new day
Hey everybody!! How did you do this weekend???
So. It's the day after labour day; the day after our annual bbq. It was great! The only bad thing about it was that i had to get up to get the kids ready for school. Usually people leave about 9-9:30, but last night we went until about 11. I didnt even make an attempt to put the kids to bed. I figured if they'd survive. It would be the first time they went to be late to get early the next day. Besides, if i'd put them to bed on time they wouldnt be tired enough to sleep, not to mention the festivities downstairs!
So i know you want to know how i did. Well, i did well with the food. I had a chicken burger around 5 or 6 o clock. Then somewhere in the night i had a hamburger patty by itself and then a sausage by itself. That was it.
Now, the drinking was another story. I had a Smirnoff, which it took me all night to drink, because i was all over the place getting sauce and burgers and cups and whatnot. Later in the evening a bunch of us were doing shots... I hadnt planned on doing any, much less how many i did. We bought the stuff and i figured i would have one. But shots are like chips, its hard to have just one LOL!!
Anyway, it was a party and i enjoyed myself, and i drank water all day, all night. No concerns, no stress, back on track this morning.
Besides, the kids are off to school today, now that's a reason to celebrate! Shots anyone???![]()
Ugh, maybe if I had something to celebrate. ![]()
I did...badly. I allowed myself to eat all sorts of junk for the entire 4 day trip and I even verged on binging last night when we went to the ballgame. I shared a fresh burrito with my son which was the healthiest ballpark fare but then I had some popcorn, nachos, soda, and french fries that everyone else was eating. Then I had some s'mores and then I had ice cream after that. This is after coming back from a camping trip where I ate whatever the heck I saw and didn't really exercise much.
Luckily I'm not *too* discouraged. I know that what I did was dumb and that I gained weight but I'm not going to weigh myself until Friday as usual, hopefully it'll be less depressing by then. For me this is a lifestyle change so I know that going back to my regular every day life will get me back on traick.
"For me this is a lifestyle change so I know that going back to my regular every day life will get me back on traick."
That's the spirit, e'bear!!!!![]()
Yeah, except the typo. Yikes!
Well, it was a big food weekend for me. My birthday weekend. We had my grandson's Baptism Saturday and party after that. Since I'm not really calling this a diet but rather a lifestyle change, I can't really say I went off the diet. But I did eat things I should not have, I tried to keep it in moderation. On Sunday, it was my birthday and we all went for a picnic. Lots of food. And birthday cake. There was a ton of food left over. I gave half a birthday cake to the neighbors and today I took the huge Costco Party Bag of peanut M&M's to work to put out in the breakroom. A pregnant lady spotted me before I got to the breakroom and wanted some, so I gave her the whole bag. I gained 3 pounds. But I'm back on track today. Had a yogurt for breakfast and just finished an apple for my morning snack. I guess there are times in your life when there are going to be more celebrations, more food, than others. I did celebrate, I did eat some unhealthy foods. But I did enjoy myself and now I'm back in the saddle. It probably set me back a few days worth of hard work. But it was worth it.
that's the key, isnt it? who said a lifestyle change means never eating fun foods again?? why should people who dont struggle with their weight get all the fun??
i've reached a point in this journey where i will not place guilt on myself when i eat something fun. and as you say, chasingjames, there will always be some celebration and party and get together, and no way to avoid the foods that bring us down. but with a good game plan and a bit of leeway now and then, and the knowledge that this moment does not define us, we can live like everyone else and enjoy life!!![]()
