Keeping it under control
I quit smoking 2 1/2 months ago and it is a struggle keeping the weight under control! I was already 20 lbs. over and now I am in a panic because another 6 crept on. I too used Chantix and seemed to have the weight under control while on Chantix---but when I went off--whew!!! In 2 weeks jumped 6 lbs., and the funny thing is I had been dieting for fear this would happen. Although my Doctor told me "quitting smoking does not make you gain weight--what you put in your mouth does"!! She is so wrong--I did diet and it came on!! Now to struggle to get it off!!
I have a upcoming wedding in 9 months and am starting early to "get it under control"!! Good luck to all of you out there that are in the same situation as I am.
Hi, I too quit with chantix and was told the same thing by the doctor, I really watched what I ate trying not to change a thing. But my weight gain was worse than yours so far I have gained 12lbs!! I love the fact that I am not smoking but really hate the fact that I am gaining all this extra weight since I am already about 20lbs overweight before this. Good luck as well and keep posting how it is working
Yes, it really stinks--considering we are doing this to get "healthy"! My friend gained 30 and she is only 4'11"--I can't go there!! I am approaching 52 years old and must be menopausal also--just not good combinations! 2 years ago weighed 102 lbs. and with a change in my work schedule shot up to 137 in a year--I'm fighting to get back to a place I can at least be comfortable. I had made it back to 129.5 when I quit smoking! My only daughter get's married next spring and I want to find a dress---I'm fighting all the way!! good luck to you.
Stopping smoking will result in weight gain... I don't care what anyone says. I too have stopped a number of times and returned to smoking because of my weight.. or that was my excuse. I have stopped again. It's been over three months now. I've put on some weight but I'm trying desperately not to focus on it. It's hard though. Good luck to both of you and I'll continue to follow the posts!
I too have quit smoking and I am getting married in 8 months so I am with you on Keeping it in control! I thought that quitting smoking made you gain weight because of the tendoncy to eat more? It is not actually a side effect of not having nicotine(or a smoking cessation aid of some sort), is it?
Nicotine is a stimulant--and yes when you stop smoking I think it is automatic to gain weight!! I have quit in years past and always gained around 9 lbs. and that is being VERY aware of the weight gain. This time around (4 months now) I did gain 8 lbs.--while dieting! I am fighting it every step of the way--and I don't mean the smoking--I'm talking the weight!! I used to sit every night and have a few cigarettes watching my fav TV program--so one rule I made to myself was that NO FOOD was to be taken to the couch while watching TV. If I strted that then that would have been my replacement to smoking--you just can't to it!
Figure out when you smoked the most and what you are doing now to replace that time!
I work with gals that gained 30-40 pounds when they quit--I cannot do that! It has been 4 months yeaterday--I weighed 132.5 when I quit--today I am 131--hoo-ray! But it is on my mind everyday! I'm sure at some point I can relax--but not today!
I have a daughter getting married in 8 months too---like you I don't want to have to worry about dress size!! Have you bought your dress yet? Be very careful--it's no fun not liking your "body image" especially on the most impotant day of your life!
God luck and keep me informed on how it is going for you.

I stopped smoking cold turkey a little over two weeks ago, started counting steps with my pedometer, watching what I eat, trying to do everything right. I lost 2 lbs the first week, now today, I have gained those same two pounds back. I am already about 35 lbs overweight and less than thrilled with the idea of gaining more weight, although I do love finally being smoke free after more than 30 years. I guess I just have to keep reminding myself that I am getting healthier, keep stepping and moniter what and when I eat. Any tips on diet (I hate that word) would be greatly appreciated.
I quit smoking july 26th.I used Chantix for 2 weeks then I switched to nictine gum. I gained about 10 lbs initially, but I bought a pedometer and started walking at least a half hour once a day, sometimes twice a day. I also quit eating sugar and I quit eating after dinner in the evenings. If I do HAVE to have a late night snack, I limit it to a serving of rice cakes, or something else very light. Since then I have lost the 10 lbs, plus some. I am now down to 136 and my goal weight is 125, so I'm very pleased to say it is not impossible to quit smoking, but to also lose the weight!!! I also bought and use some workout DVDs to use when the weather is lousy, and I'm unable to get outside and walk. The cost was right around 20.00 and came with the exercise bands. You do not have to put alot of money into exercise equipment or into club memberships to get healthy and lose weight, I am finding!
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
