Keto Diet

Quote  |  Reply
Was wondering if anyone around here is on a keto diet right now or has been on one recentally.?  I used it last spring to drop weight fast while perserveing muscle but I am now thinking of going back on it to gain muscle while still in a fat burning state.  Anyone any luck with this while trying to gain weight instead of loseing it?

What is a keto diet?
Very low-carb type diet where your liver instead of produceing glycogen from carbohydrates it starts to break down fatty-acids into ketones for the body to use as a energy source.  Keto diet is kind of like the atkins diet but instead of no carbs you have certain days where your replenish you body with carbs to fill your muscles with glycogen stores.
I did the Atkins diet and lost 20 pounds that way, but I also ended up in the hospital having my gall bladder removed.

This kind of carb-restrictive diet wreaks havoc on your system.  I recommend staying away from them.

Your best bet is always a healthy, balanced diet.
I've heard the Inuit were on the "keto" all winter. They apparently lost little muscle strength and were in excellent health.  I think it would be hard to drop fat and GAIN muscle to a huge extent. I mean logically what evolutionary advantage would it be? I do think to HOLD on to current muscle and lose fat though yes it is the recommended diet.  My diet for the last 3 months is ~ 56/28/13 fat/protein/carbs on 3300 daily calories and have lost 10lbs (mostly fat even if I do say so myself) but also have lost a bit of strength (am trying to  powerlift in the 242 class). I do think that in order to get "ripped" the anedotal bodybuilding ratio is 3/2/1 fat/protein/carbs. Let me know what u decide ratio wise.
I read, once, that keytones are actually waste products. I know they're in things like nail polish remover and tend to give you REALLY nasty breath.

Honestly, I truly believe the best diet is a well-balanced diet with an appropriate number of calories based on your size and activity level.

My intent was to be on the keto diet but I've been up to around 40-50 calories a day. Be ware of the level of fat that you are ingesting. I think Atkins is great, it works for me because I am on anti-depressants and that makes it very hard for me to lose weight simply by counting calories.  I was actually down to 185lbs when I started with the medication and the weight loss stopped and ALL the weight came back. Eating the Atkins way has also stopped me from being bloated which now I realize has been nearly constant for the last 3 years or so, especially when it was TTOM urrgh I looked like I was preggers. I know its not for everyone and some people have had really bad side effects but I plan to stick with it. I know that I must take care what I eat after and not to lose the weight too fast otherwise I will have horrible folds of skin.

I guess a lot of people think whooo hoo I lost the weight I will eat whatever I want and whatever quantity I want  and I don't need to go to the gym but that will cause weight gain whatever diet that you were on.

reahn, I did the same as several years ago to fit into a bridesmaid dress. I almost died! Ended up having my gallbladder removed and then I ballooned back up again.

So terrier08, if the Keto diet is safer and works for you that's good, but please be careful and get some blood work done.

Concerned.
