Has anyone ever heard of putting your body into a ketosis stage by eating macadamia nuts and a brick of cream cheese and nothing else for one day? My Mom said that if you do that it is supposed to kick start the weight loss for the Atkins diet by putting your body into a fat burning stage called Ketosis. Has anyone ever heard of this before or done this before? I just got done eating the macadamia nuts and figured out the calories and it was 1260 for the bottle, plus I need to still eat the cream cheese!! I hope I'm not just doing this and then going to gain weight as an outcome!! I'm scared!! Any thoughts?

My son is 2 1/2 years old right now,  he has epilepsy, and he is on the ketogenic diet to contol seizures. this is a very dangerous diet that needs to be controled and followed by a team of doctors and nutritionists.

by eating that much nuts and cream cheese... thats dangerous.  the key for getting into the ketogenic stage, is by starving yourself for a few days, and then eating VERY small portions of these high fat, low sugar, low carb foods. The reason ketosis works, is because it makes your body think you are starving, and your body will start to run off of the fat from the food you eat, instead of sugar. but there is a fine line,  if you go too far, you could go into Acidtosis and start throwing up sips of water and virtually anything else you put in your mouth. this will cause dehydration, and there is nothing healthy about it.

when my son started this diet, he hit Acidtosis and ended up in the hospital, with IV hydration and a feeding tube in his nose.

Right now, he has a team of a nutritionist, and 4 Pediatric Neurologists following him through this diet.

If I could give you any advise, it would be to stop - if you've started.  Yes it does take time to lose weight, but  you don't need your body to jump start. by simply switching from bad food to good food is enough to kick start your body.

if you want any more info on this, feel free to message me.

This sounds like 2 words to me:

FAD DIET

If you want a low carb diet there are several to chose from.  South Beach seems to be the best as it reinstates fruits and milk back into your diet through good carbs.

The best way to look at this is keep the white stuff to a minimum.  White stuff meaning sugar, white flour and white rice...etc.  Stick with wheat and multigrain products.-  Like the second phase of South Beach.

However, if you have a weight problem ask yourself is it realistic to make a life change and eat these types of foods without straying?

Good Luck

I would like to add that my brother in law did Atkins recently and ate a jar of peanuts and ended up with a serious case of irritable bowel syndrome. So seriously painfull he had a lower Gastro intestinal tract "probe"or whatever they do and needed some of his bowel REMOVED because it was so badly damaged by all the added fiber. Might I remind you that all nuts are high in fiber.

Further more ketosis is a condition that diabetics must avoid because of the damage it does to the kidneys and they tend to avoid carbs with no natural insulin or ODing on insulin.

There is some wisdom that is extremely applicable here:

In all things MODERATION!

Have to agree with this comment.

Sorry, but atkins diet is just not healthy, mainly BECAUSE you have to restrict your diet so severely.. eventually you and your body will crave some kind of carbs which will throw off the ketosis you have worked so hard for. Ketosis takes approx four days and one of the other posters is right, consuming any carbs during this four day period would stall the process. This diet works only while you stick ridgidly to the rules. That does not only mean, no rice, potatoes, pasta or bread or other grains.. but also means you cannot eat fruit, red peppers, sweetcorn, tomatoes, carrots...I could go on. In fact any food that is naturally sweet is off the menu.

This diet is effective as an emergency method of losing weight for those whose weight puts them in the morbidly obese category, as another poster mentioned especialy for those who have to lose weight quickly for a lifesaving operation. Having said that, the atkins diet also takes a huge amount of discipline and should only be undertaken under the supervision of health professionals, since it has been proved to put an enormous a strain on the liver (where all fats in the diet are processed). If you have any kind of liver disease or weakness do not use this diet to lose weight.

American Dietetic Association, among Atkins' critics over the years states "You can also burn muscle, and body protein can be in the form of muscle -- your heart muscle."

You may not be aware of this, but Dr. Robert Atkins (the inventor of this diet concept) died from major organ failure, he was obese, and was known to be suffering from congestive heart failure and hypertension. This does not sound like a healthy man.

Please be very careful when beginning a restrictive diet such as this.

Well, the truth is that your body gets into this "burning fat" state called Ketosis whenever you have around 15-20 days without food. I mean... not even a BITE of anything. It starts when your body is taking all type of nourishment from itself, it's like, your eating yourself.

It's very dangerous.  I've tried it a few months ago and I'm still suffering consequences from it. Your breath starts smelling funny, and you look like dying. The first days you can't stand the hunger cramps and the dizziness, then they dissapear, which is more dangerous because you spend days and days without food and without even realizing. You don't lose too much weight by fasting, specially if you do it several times a month/year... Besides you can pass out, you don't remember things well, you just feel like sleeping all day long, and when you decide you want to start eating again, you have horrible stomach aches everytime a piece of food touches your insides.

It's no fun. :] Forget about it.

It takes your body at least 3 days to get into ketosis stage according to my doctor. Sugar, and bad carbs take you out of this stage.  A strict protien only diet will put you there the quickest.  I am on a medically supervised weightloss program and have to check my ketosis level daily.  If I am at a high level of ketosis for several days that means I am most likely dehydrated. I can say that I have been on this program for 5 weeks and in that time I have lost 27lbs of just fat.  After the first week you can add good carbs back in but only those found in fruits and veggies other than potatoes, rice and stuff like that.  Hope this helps.

as everyone else pointed out, the atkins diet works by reducing calories. it also causes you to both take up and burn fat simultaneously after you eat, due to the effect of protein on your insulin/glucagon ratio.

ketosis can lead to ketoacidosis, which can be fatal.

I know pleanty of people who lost weight on Atkins, but not one of them kept it off. Most are heavier now than when they started. Seriously, does anyone know anybody who has kept the weight off for a year or more after doing Atkins??

Honestly, even with all the controversy, I'm pretty sure that carb restriction is not necessarily all that dangerous, as long as you do get enough vegetables and/or supplements to maintain basic nutrition. It is very rough on the kidneys, for sure, but healthy kidneys can take a lot of abuse and adapt.

The main problem, though, is that it isn't sustainable for 99% of the people who go on it. So it does NOT lead to long-term weight loss... just weight cycling, which makes it even more difficult to lose weight successfully later.

I kept it off. I started at 235 lbs and I am now at 182. The highest weight I have ever hit again has been around 200. about 3-4 years ago I did Atkins for quite awhile and lost a lot of weight. Eventually I hit my goal weight and got completely fed up with Atkins. The truth, though, is that I have always been passionate about sandwhiches and hated not being able to have them. Sandwhiches are god. I went on and off Atkins for a long time until discovering Calorie Count. Calorie Count was a godsend. I knew not of how to diet besides Atkins. I thought carbs were Satan. But really, if you monitor your calories, you'll be able to eat from all different food groups, not weird people out by eating cheese rolled in sliced turkey, and change your lifestyle in the long-term!

The main coolest thing about Atkins was that once you break out of the carb-craving stage which is basically the first 3-4 weeks, you no longer even think about eating Cheez-its, potato chips, bagels, etc. On Atkins, it is really hard to "snack." Beef jerky is interesting for about 3 days, you get tired of cheese, its nasty gnawing on a chunk of salami, etc etc etc. Atkins jumpstarted my dieting, but I wish I had found Calorie Count sooner so that I didn't have to keep going on and off Atkins. I can now eat sandwhiches (healthy ones) and have stir frys. I can cook all different kinds of meals and enjoy life. Dr. Atkins was smart, but the diet just isn't practical in society.

I'm pretty sure you could put your body into ketosis eating nothing but nuts and cheese. But you'd also make it malnourished at the same time.

If you want to lose weight eat a balanced diet (all the food groups), watch the portions and do some exercise. Losing weight with a fad diet is only ever a temporary solution.

What a perfect summation.   This kind of gimmick may "work" in the short-term, but wouldn't you rather so something that will work for the long haul and actually leave you healthier and feeling better rather than looking haggard and having stank breath like Atkins zombies always get? I'm all for keeping down excessive carbs, especially simple carbs, and getting adequate protein, but the Atkins plan just seems like something that might make you weigh less on the scale, but is totally screwing up your body on the inside where you can't see.

I have been doing Atkins for two days now and have lost 4.6 lbs. I don't plan on staying on this diet forever.. but sometimes it's a good change for me as I like a lot of the foods you are allowed to have.

given daily fluctuations, I doubt you've actually lost nearly 5 lbs in 2 days.  Asided from the above commenter, i don't know anyone who went on Atkins and DIDN'T gain the weight back.  One of the reasons it's dangerous is because

YOUR BRAIN NEEDS CARBS!

ps - the first 10 lbs you lose on Atkins is water weight, not fat.  Anything after that is not going to be just pure fat lost - it's going to be both lean tissue and fat and more water.

My doctor had me do a lower-carb diet that didn't go below 125 carbs a day.  How much weight do you need to lose?

Does eating a block of cream cheese really sound like a good idea?  It seems like you'd have a fairly low calorie day if you don't go overboard on the hazelnuts, so theoretically you should lose weight, but that would be terrible for your health.  Just eat fruits vegetables and whole grains.

Not possible to lose 4.6 lbs of fat in two days. Sorry!

Happy thoughts . . .

Your body enters ketosis because your brain can only use glucose and you are starving it.  Also, if you don't eat enough protein your liver will start breaking down your muscles to feed your brain.  Some of the byproducts of ketosis are toxic (nail polish remover anyone?) which is why it's so hard on your body.

Look it up in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis

I've loosen that and more in 1 day, by extreme dieting and exercising like 5 hours without stop. I felt like **** the next morning, but I maintained it, I don't know how.  O_o

Just because the little arrow on the scale moves doesnt mean youve lost fat. Mainly water. Your body is MADE of mostly water, and when you fast/extreme diet/etc.. your losing water. It takes 3,500 calories to equal a pound of fat. That would be about 2 days or more depending on the person of not eating anything to lose 1 pound.

 loosen? spell check anyone?

And no, you didn't. You lost water.  3500 calories = 1 lb.  You cannot possibly burn 18,500 calories in 5 hours.  Ain't happening.  Also, not eating and working out is NOT A GOOD IDEA!
