Kid with Nut allergy -anyone give me some help?
Anyone with kids that are allergic to nuts?
Should she not let her daughter eat PB too?
How do you handle it?
I would love to be able to help her out in the only way I can right now and thats with as much info as I can give her.
Thanks everyone!
for a peanut allergy, there should be NO peanuts in the house and they will have to read nutrition info very carefully. the lines on the packages that say "may have been manufactured" etc are usually to protect against liability and USUALLY one with allergies wont have a problem. but she will need to see how sensitive he is before risking it.
she needs to make sure that she has an epipen and benadryl for him at all times, that any adults that he is with know about his allergy, and that any school he goes to does not allow peanut butter in the building.
a nut allergy does not get better, will not go away, and will get worse. she must be very very careful and watch for signs that he is having a reaction when he himself doesnt even know it.
if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
edit: oh and no chinese food, no bakery food, and if he gets ice cream, the scoopers need to be washed in fresh running water before scooping his ice cream.
each time he has contact with it, the next time will be that much worse, stronger and faster. and people put nuts in crazy things. i had taffy when i was 13 that had walnuts in it, 10 min later, i couldnt breathe and was being rushed to the hospital with my neck larger than my head.
good for you for trying to help her! a lot of people dont realize how serious an allergy like this is.
edit: they should pull the trees up no offense. my mom has black walnut trees that i grew up with and i was chronically having problems, from asthma to swelling to just being ill all the time, and i never touched the trees or the nuts, just having it in the air was bad enough. now when i go home, i have to use an inhaler several times a day just to keep breathing properly, and thats staying inside all the time.
Thank you sooo much guys!
until they have a handle on it, I would agree that it's best to remove all foods containing nuts from the house. maybe later they can have a 'forbidden cupboard of nutty things', once he's old enough to have a better understanding of his allergy and to not try to get into it.
Hey!
I have a nut allergy myself and growing up with it wasn't hard!
My friends ate their PJ sandwiches and I ate my No nuts chocolate spread ones, I didn't care what the others ate!
She should make sure that he has a medical alert bracelet and which ever adult is in charge knows about it and has a Epi-Pen (if needed).
For Picnics or Preschool snacks there are T-shirts that say NUT ALLERGY in bold red letters (you can get them online)
I speak from experience on this subject. I started having an allergy to nuts when I was 17. I had no problem before then. If I even touched a nut and then touched my skin or eyes, I would get hives and my throat would close. Tell your friend to keep a bottle of Benadryl in the house and in her car. Also, leave a bottle and instructions with any babysitters. Restaurants sometimes use peanut oil or have nuts on the premisis so she needs to be cautious. Each and every incident will get continually worse and will happen faster with every contact. She should pay attention to labels and peanut butter should be banned. He may out grow it, as I have, but for now, better safe than sorry. It's very serious and Very scary!
