Kidney Beans and Sodium?

Quote  |  Reply
hi there!

i am looking for anyone really who can help me with this question.

i bought some kidney beans and ate them plain. i drained and rinsed them really well and i am wondering if this brings down the 600mg of sodium that the can says they have.

does anyone know? my sodium levels are usually in the normal-high range, so if rinsing my kidney beans brings down their sodium level, i'd be really happy.

thanks

I would think that it is taken for granted that you drain and rinse beans before you cook with them (or eat them). Therefore, whatever amount of sodium you find in food listing will do.
I don't know, i don't usually rinse out the beans. But that is a darn good question.
I was wondering the same thing myself. I just stocked up on all kinds of beans b/c they are filling and they are good for you but the sodium in the can in out of control! Does rinsing them help???

There may be some reduction in the salt content but not much. The salt in canned food is for perservative use. So the beans have soaked up much of the salt. In addition, you have no idea how long that can has been sitting there on the shelf in that salt!
I still want to eat them b/c they are good and filling and low calories. And not to mention very convenient!! is this oK???
I would just drink plenty of water to offset the extra salt.

I prefer to cook my own beans starting from dry so I can control the salt. I know its not very convenient when you want a quick snack though. I would imagine you could cook a few days worth and put them in the fridge.
Very true! I could make and store but canned ones are also cheaper!! I will not eat them every day or anything so i think i am ok. Just some times will have for lunch!
It should reduce the sodium, but I don't know by how much.  That's why I cook my beans from scratch with no salt.  I don't know if you can find no salt added canned beans where you live, but I get them from Whole Foods Market, where their store brand is very inexpensive.
We dont have a whole foods, we do have a Love whole foods(local owned and really cool) but they are xpensive so never really looked at their beans. will check it out though
