What kind of olive oil should I get?

Quote  |  Reply
I'm going to the store later to pick up some things and I was just wondering what kind of olive oil I should get? I wanted to start making some of the recipes I'm reading on here and olive oil is included in a lot of them. Any suggestions?

This is a great site and has some good info on healthy foods:

extra virgin  : )
there's a huge number of brands of olive oil... I usually get Bertolli but, I live in a rural area and have fewer choices here.

As long as it's Extra Virgin Olive Oil, you're getting the best kind.  You can also check the label and look for statements like 'cold pressed', which is better and means less processing.

olive oil = yummy
extra virgin for sure.  I sometimes buy storebrand for sure and it's okay.  Also, I love those little spray bottles for oil.  They help to ensure that you don't use that much!
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the only one you want.

any olive oil is great !!!  i make my own , if you cant do that look for cold pressed its better for you . All Spanish people use olive oil evry day , lots of it too , its great !
all that rubbish about extra virgen  is just to make you buy more expensive ones , dont !
Olive oil is like fine wines... it is a matter of personal taste.  I love olives so I prefer anything but extra virgin. I like more flavor so I choose the darkest I can find. If you're going to a chain supermarket often the olive oil sucks and has no flavor. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods have some better choices. Or best - go to wine store that sells olive oil in a tin container instead of a glass bottle. Our store actually has free olive-oil tastings along with the free wine tastings.

Maybe I should change my nick to "food snob." :-)
