I saw a thread regarding sneakers for running and wanted to ask:

I do kickboxing to a home video and also long walk/jogs with my doggy. So i believe a cross trainer is best? My other situation is I have falling arches and get severe shin splints. So I need a shoe that has really good arch support and cushion, right? Any advice or suggestions on brands? I'm not apposed to buying a different pair of shoes for each activity. Actually, that might be better so I don’t get the carpet dirty when I kickbox. Please help.

tsthin - I would like to know too! I had a pair of Adidas cross trainers that are wearing down and I will be looking for new ones soon. I also do a lot of aerobics/kickboxing classes so I'm looking for the same things you are.

I have really high arches and have always loved my adidas. I stick to the running or trail shoes but use them for dance class and kickboxing. Sometimes they're a little grippy during dance, but not bad. I just bought a new pair this week that have a gortex upper (adidas Trediac GTX from endless.com) - perfect for my outdoor workouts in rainy Portland. Adidas has a lot of training shoes that look like they would work well for your situation.

I have abnormally high arches, so I have to wear athletic shoes most of the time. Other shoes just don't have enough arch support for me. But here's something that may interest you: two board certified podiatrists have told me that New Balance shoes are the absolute best athletic shoes on the market. So if I were you, I'd go to a place where NB is sold, or start at their web site, and look for shoes that are specifically geared to the type of exercise you want to be doing.

P.S. Some other tips I've picked up along the way: look for a shoe that's flexible in the toe but stiff-almost unmovable- in the arch if you're looking for good arch support. Also, before actually buying a set of shoes,  first set them down on a wooden shelf or wooden bench in front of you. Touch them and see if they teeter (like from side to side). If they do, there's a problem with how the soles are glued on, and they could make your foot pitch and roll while you're wearing it, causing an ankle injury. Better safe than sorry. Happy shopping!

Hey, I have fallen arches (have become flat-footed) and I wear insoles in my regular shoes but for running I only need to wear Saucony Hurricane 9's.  They are awesome for arch support.  And they're light.  I love them.  You're best off getting them on-line -- they're much cheaper that way.  Oh, and avoid the Hurricane 8's, they're not so great.

i know you don't want to feel old but i went to easy spirit and got fitted and the shoes were so cushioning i feel i can exercise forever. just a thought

You should wear the proper shoe constructed for that particular activity. This means having 3 or 4 different types of sneakers. Your feet will be glad you appreciate them and it's always fun to have a variety of shoes to choose from. I switch off two pairs for the gym and two other pairs for running.
I have cross trainers that are ok -- I think they are Avia's???  I would 2nd the recommendation of going to one of those special stores that custom design the best shoes for you based on your foot and gait.  Yes you are going to pay but it will pay off in the end if you can avoid the injuries later.

I pound the apvement a lot in my asics gels and I hardly even have calluses. They are about 80 bucks, so a little pricey, but not too outrageous.
