Kitty deja-vu? Happy thoughts for Vodka!

Quote  |  Reply

Since Whiskey died, Vodka has been particularly clingy, as I've made aware before.  We've gotten used to her sitting on our laps and propping herself on the laptops.  We've also gotten used to rubbing her belly, all fluffy and squishy.

What we were not used to was rubbing her belly and feeling bones.  We noticed over the weekend she's dropped a lot of weight in the past month.  This was the first of several red flags for us, as Whiskey had lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time when she was sick.

As the weekend progressed we noticed a few other things.  She always seemed tired and had lost her curious nature.  Instead of crawling around on the back of the sofa or exploring the rooms she'd rather sleep on a chair, all day, all night.  She jumps at the chance to eat our food, especially the butter on our toast, but wants little to do with her food unless we're standing next to her dish, and even then she only nibbles.

The only differences  between her and Whiskey at this point are the lack of sores on her face and her mouth is a nice shade of pink, not grey.

I'm scared. :\  I can't handle losing another kitty, especially this one.  Maybe if it were Alex's fat blob of a cat I'd be just fine and dandy, but not my little Vodka.

We scheduled a check up and pre-operative blood work for her today.  We figured if she does have the same thing Whiskey did, when they snip her open to remove her goodies they'd see it, and it'd be caught early enough that we can tackle it head on instead of playing a waiting game.

Wish her luck? :(

Your cat may be pining.

That sounds REALLY silly, but we noticed our two boys ate a lot less and were particularly listless following Wilma, our oldest cat, passing away. They are now getting more lively (and weighty) again a couple of months on. However, the vet check-up is still wise.

What did they finally dx Whiskey with?

And if Vodka hasnt been spayed yet, she might be in heat and depressed--hence both the clinginess and the decreased eating.

Good luck with getting everything taken care of--- its so hard being a good kitty mom, they cant tell you what hurts and dont even usually tell you that it does hurt.  Kids at least cry.

Sending best wishes for a happy prognosis..............

It was assumed Whiskey had cancer.  Her intestines were far too large for a kitty that hadn't been eating coupled with the insane anemia.  She wasn't around long enough for a proper diagnosis.  All we got were assumptions.

Awww, I'm so sorry. It's hard when you're really worried about a fur baby's health. Maybe Vodka is still sad about it. After all, you are.

When I got a new kitty, the older kitty acted different for months. She would hide under the bed and just want to be alone quite frequently. I took her in to the vet and they didn't find anything. It's been over a year since we got the new kitty and the older one still goes off to be on her on for a while.

I think if Whisky were hiding and didn't want to be picked up would be more concerning than her being extra love-y. Of course, since you're going to the vet anyway, it can't hurt to bring it up.

It is probably just missing Whiskey.  My in-laws came to stay with us for one night this weekend and brought their dog, Stacy.  Our dog has been mopey since they left on Sunday afternoon, but he still eats.

When my husband and I got married, his family's dog, Lucky, went through a depression because he was gone as well.  Lucky licked his paws until there was no fur left and sores formed, stopped eating, and just moped all the time.  Happily, within a few months, he returned to his former self.

I do hope that all goes well with her.

I guess a few minutes of torture at the vet was enough to get Vodka back to her old self.  She's cuddly, she's curious, she's hungry, and she's tearing up my leather sofa with her claws. :|

Her CBC came back relatively normal.  Her HH was a little high, but only by a few points.  We're still waiting for the results of the metabolic panel, but aren't expecting to find anything.  Her weight loss is attributed to her just getting out of heat and her lethargy is just because she's a lazy cat.

I's happy again. :D

oh yay! that's good to hear.  i was going to say, animals grieve...so it was likely just that.  good to hear, CD.

aww poor kitty. I have a kitty and she is at least 12 and we never had her fixed. Shes always been super skinny. She looks like shes about to die cause shes soo skinny but let me tell you that cat can kill a can of wet food no problem by herself. Vodka will come out of it. Maybe brining her to the vet made her open her lil eyes and realize that your worried about her.

@gem86: When my kitty got older whe also got very skinny and would eat like a total pig.  Turns out she had a thyroid problem which cause her metabolism to be very high.  It can cause problems, and there are meds they can take, so if your kitty is like that you might want to get her blood tested to make sure she doesn't have a problem.

@CD: glad your fur baby is feeling better!!!

Uh-oh.  Vet called us back.  :\  We'll know more after all of the tests on Friday.

So I take it the vet said something concerning to you? Hang in there.

Can I ask why she is not spayed? Not spaying puts them at risk for cancer... :/

And I hope nothing but good news comes for your kitty. I know what it's like, it sucks. *hugs*

She was not spayed because she was too young when we got her, we were too broke when she was older, and then after we got them vaccinated we had to deal with Whiskey's medical issues.  Spaying our indoor cats was the last thing on our minds.

It was her pre-op blood work for the spaying on Friday that raised yet another red flag for us, and she'll be spending Thursday at the vet's getting some special tests run.  Some of her blood work came back high for no apparent reason, and it's one completely random thing with no other related tests elevated or lowered, so they're a little at a loss just yet.

She's in good hands, CD. It's good that she's getting checked out sooner than later. My thoughts are with you and your sweet little kitty. Keep us posted!

How can I make walking fun?

You have to find a way to make exercise fun or else you won't do it. If you walk indoors on a treadmill, I recommend moving outdoors into the fresh air... Read more
