Knee pain question...

I seem to be having some sharp stabing pains behind my kneecaps almost every time I do a lunge or squat. My form is good, I've been very careful thinking that might be the problem yet it doesn't go away. I don't get it every time I workout but it still happens a lot. Does anybody have any thoughts on this??

Sounds a bit like patella tendonitis but then again that usually happens moreso with sports that involve jumping or aything thats too high impact on the knee. I had this a few times before and it was worse when i did static lunges and squats so if by any chance you are palying sports too it couls be this.

I used to get terrible knee pains when I first started exercising, so took it easy on my legs for a few weeks. After a while the pain just went away and now I'm able to exercise as much as I need to. So it's possible that you've sprained your knees, or overworked them. Maybe give them some time to rest/heal and see what happens? If it doesn't go away, you might want to see a doctor to make sure you don't have any kind of cartilage or tendon problem. If there's something seriously wrong with your knees, you shouldn't be putting any pressure on them.

make sure that you are stretching your hamstrings, calves and quads. These muscles are what stabilize the knee. I sometimes have behind the knee pain and have found that when I stretch out my gastrocs (calves) really good it tends to go away a bit.  place toes on a hard book while keeping heels on floor and lean forward til you feel a good stretch in the back of your legs.

Usually patellar tendonitis is in the front of the knee and taping can help that so you can continue doing low impact exercises.

Go to a doc and find out for sure what is going on. It could be a tear, a shift in the patella, bone spurs, anything. Until then, go easy on the squats. Maybe don't dip as low?
