Do any of you know anything about kidney stone prevention through diet?
So I passed my second kidney stone (that I know of) recently. This one was considerably larger than the first, and I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with them and what changes I can make in my diet to help prevent them. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
my boyfriend passed two kidney stones a few months ago (he had 5 in his xrays!) and while diet doesnt always prevent them, you can attempt to by limiting your calcium intake as well as the amount of coffee, tea and soda you drink. They also told him to stop drinking apple juice (his favorite)
Check with your doctor. I think there are two types of kidney stones - one can be treated with diet and one can't. Find out which yours is and ask him about preventing. I do know you should drink a ton of water every day and avoid pop.
My brother had two kidney stones a couple of years ago and I took him to the hospital. The doctor who helped him said to prevent getting them in the future, limit the amount of pop you drink and always drink lots of water.
thanks everyone. I knew that i needed to drink a lot of water i just didn't know if some foods are better than others to eat with this kind of problem.
pavlovcat: my stones are calcium stones. Does this make a difference?
I think calcium stones are the most common. That's good. It means it's not a genetic thing. Check out a site like WebMD. It says to avoid lots of salt, meat, and dark green vegetables, chocolate and nuts. It also said to actually INCREASE your amount of calcium. Your doctor would definitely have the best info for your type of situation though. My dad gets kidney stones but he drinks pop with everything, puts salt on everything, and pretty much refuses to drink plain water.
Hi I had calcium kidney stones and I was told to eat low fat or half fat dairy and not so much of it. This is your cheeses milks yoghurts and such like. If you are a person prone to stones in your kidneys, you can also be prone to gall stones in later life. I chose not to listen to my doctor when I was 18 and carried on with eating lots of full fat and high fat dairy and I ended up with gall stones at 33, so the Doctor was right in my case, so now I eat skimmed milk, low fat yoghurts half fat cheese and dairy. As kidney stones are painful, very painful, but gall stones are crippling. He didnt mention meat tho or nowt else. Even though my gallbladder and stones was taken out, I remain on this low fat half fat dairy as I still have my kidneys. Better to be sagfe than sorry.
Hope you feel better very soon.
Lots of love sue aka astarlhippy

This goes along with what my doctor told me when I had 2 kidney stones about 12 years ago. He told me that the stones likely were the result of a calcium deficiency- my body was storing all available calcium, in the form of the stones, for future use. I started drinking more milk on a regular basis, along with upping my dairy intake in general, and I've never passed a stone since.
