Let me know what you think about my fitness schedule

Quote  |  Reply

Without much planning and just doing what I felt like, I've settled down to this schedule. Primary goal = general fitness. My side interest are marathon, and triathlon since I used to do it and want to get back on track. Let me know what you think. Too much, too little, not balanced?

Monday

  • Morning swim (30-60 min Zone 3)
  • Lunch run (4 mile Interval Alternate Zone 4-Zone 2)
  • House construction (1hr Zone 2 usually)
  • Stationary bike during Monday Night Football (1.5 hr Zone 2)

Tuesday

  • Weight (Chest/Biceps or Back/Abs Zone 2)
  • Lunch run ( 4 mile easy jog Zone 2)
  • Evening Competitive volleyball league (1.5 hr Irregular Zone 2-4)

Wednesday

  • Morning swim (Zone 3)
  • Lunch run 4 mile interval (Alternate Zone 2-Zone 4)
  • Afternoon house construction 1 hr (Zone 2)
  • Evening Stationary bike 1 hr easy roll (Zone 2)

Thursday

  • Weight (Back/Abs or Legs) (Zone 2)
  • Lunch run (4 mile regular run Zone 3)
  • Afternoon house construction 1hr (Zone 2)
  • Evening rest (massage or yoga) Zone 1

Friday Alternate week A

  • Morning swim interval (Alternate Zone 2-Zone 4)
  • 4 mile lunch run interval (Alternate Zone 2-Zone 4)
  • Evening stationary bike long ride 2+ hrs (Zone 2)

Friday Alternate week B: Home construction 10 hrs (Zone 2)

Sat: Home construction 10 hrs (Zone 2)
Sun: Morning massage or yoga (Zone 1). Home construction 6 hrs (Zone 2)

Here are my constraints:
1. Can't run in the morning (mosquito outside, keep the house quiet inside)
2. House reconstruction takes priority on weekend and day light hours in the afternoon.
3. Can't ride in evening (mosquito and not safe to ride at night around here). I guess until the home repair is done, all riding must be done on my trainer.
4. My Tues volleyball league is usually hard hitting and a lot of jumping. My legs are usually sore for 24 hrs afterward.

Note: I've added the heart rate zones to the activities.  A little bit on my work out history: Prior to 2005, I was doing ironman training with the training schedule typical for the non-competitive ironman participant. Since 2005, I've been on two huge home repair/reconstruction project that consumed most of my time. I stopped all the work out and my body went to pot (belly) over a span of 4 yrs. Starting back again about 8 wks ago, I found out I've lost 3/4 of my endurance. Due to past habit, I slowly drift back to my old training schedule with the exception of the lost weekend due to construction. My concern right now is that even though I feel pretty good so far, out of old habit I may be pushing too hard and cause injury do to excessive stress.

It's hard to tell because some of the items you have listed could vary greatly in intensity.  It honestly doesn't seem like you are giving your body any chance to rest.

Part of that is the home construction which as you say is high priority.  Maybe you could modify the intensity of your workouts depending on the intensity of the construction.  Say if it's relatively light stuff, then hit the other stuff hard, but if it's heavy duty stuff, maybe take a break from the other stuff.

It also depends a lot on how long you have been doing this.
