Who do you know who has the healthiest diet?
Hmmm I was wondering.. when I look at what people around me eat (non-disordered eaters) I find it difficult because though I want to gain weight, I wouldn't want to eat the majority of the foods that they consume.. I suppose that's partly because when I was a binger/COE I put on a hell of a lot of weight by eating junk. So now I'm attempting to gain weight in recovery, I want to do it healthily. However, I am weary of letting the whole 'health' focus get out of control (I don't want to now veer over to orthorexia.. Hell, I'll have been through most of the recognised eating disorders list if I do that!!)
I know people here have different views on what constitutes a healthy diet - some of you 'eat clean' while others see a bit of 'junk' (I use inverted commas because I sort of agree with the theory that there is no such thing as a junk food.. a calorie is a calorie etc. etc as far as recovery is concerned!) as vital to normalising your diet...
Who in your life eats healthiest? For me I'd probably say it's my mum, because she eats all the foods I love (except meat, which I obviously don't eat. She eats fish and chicken) and wholegrains, pulses, a little olive oil, etc etc. But she's not afraid to have a few crisps from the bowl if it's passed around or white french baguette if it's fresh from the bakers.. She eats and exercises healthily (perhaps a little obsessive on the exercise but hey, it's not like I'm in *any* position to criticise! I might be lazy but it comes at a price as far as ED is concerned!) ..
What do you guys think? (sorry just realised this is all rambly.. just wondering)
What *is* healthy?
heya , i like this thread!!
id say my mum too :)
she works out 6 days a week doing spinning classes an running very day an weights 2/3 times a wek ( i know ...thats alot of excersisie but its what she loves..i think it destressed her an makes her feel great) and she has a really healthy diet and eats everything in moderation. like she treats herself to cakes or choc ( choc alot tho...everyday haha) but also has 3 very healthy meals a day, like porridge with a banana and fruit for breakfast an then a banan or somethin after the gym and then lunch of like ahealthy avacodo sandhwich or something along thoose lines then mayb a snack like fruit or a treat then a big healthy dinner then a snack b4 bed ( usually someting like a small bit of choc or fruit or pretzels. )
and shes got a fantastic body...she looks so much younger than she is and shes got amazin nice muscles and shes jus nicely toned all over...im jealous of her lol if i look anythin near how fansatic she looks when im in my 40s il be sp happy. and shes got a really healthy attitude towards food and her body and excersise!!
i think healthy is eating food with loads of vitamisa an minerals an stuff that gives u energy an makes u feel great like nuts, seeds, fruit, carbs, good cuts of meat and fish but also having a few trats along the way like some choc or ice cream or whatever takes ur fancy. i think healthy is hand in hand with moderation?? like it never hur anyone to have the odd treat now an then..so if u feel like somethin sweet that u feel bad for havin jus let urself have it :) and then itll be outta ur mind and u can go back to eating healthier foods for the rest of the day. i think in recovery is important to have a few treats to eliminate the whole fear food thing!!!
That'd be me. Well, there's a girl I know who's a nutritionist and eats well, but I don't really know exactly what she eats.
Anywho, everyone else I know eats junk out the wazoo, overeats, etc. My husband eats moderaly healthy stuff, but that's mainly because I prepare most of his meals and do most of the shopping. There's not much in the way of 'junk' in our house - except for all the cheese. He's a cheese junkie.
To answer your question about what 'healthy' is... It's a moderate, appropriate amount of calories for your healthly height/weight/activity combination that provides all the necessary vitamins, nutrients, carbs, fats, proteins, etc. I think enjoying what you eat is also a part of being healthy.
I have to say I completely agree, the healthiest diet is the way in which food is viewed and consumed and not by what food is eaten. I admire my friend who lets herself have anything she wants, she eats in moderation and if she fancys a treat she lets herself have one, no guilt. I am now finding that as well as eating food that will nourish my body I also need to eat to nourish my mind, I am now working on allowing myself to eat what I am craving (even if it is a huge bar of chocolate) and I am finding that by doing that I don't go crazy on other foods to compensate for not having the food that I really want and that it is making me a happier person!
Why can athletes eat so much?
Athletes need adequate calories to offset those they burn in training and competition. They eat to either maintain their body mass or gain muscle... Read more
