I know there are horse people out there...

I'm just curious where you set your activity level. I ride between 5 and 7 days a week (usually 5 or 6, but it'll bump up to 7 when getting ready for a show). I have it set at light activity, but I was reading some articles and they started making me wonder if I shouldn't bump it up to moderate, since I ride for at least an hour--along with everything else that gets done when taking care of horses. On top of that, I'm not completely idle all day, so...any suggestions?

I ride quite a bit too, and I would say it depends on the activity level of the riding you're doing. For example, I play polo, so most of my riding is estimated to burn about 500 calories/hr at my weight. Doing a walk trot hack burns between 200-300/hr. And cleaning stalls burns over 300/hr! I would say if you want the most accuracy, set your activity level at sedentary or light, and add in the horse activities individually.

Okay. I did that a while ago, but I questioned the accuracy since, obviously, there's a major difference between, say, a western jog and a posting trot, major difference between a western lope, a canter, and a gallop (which is what CC has listed). And, like you mentioned, there's a big difference between a relaxed hack and serious training,

I jump my horse 2-3 times per week and hack him about 3 times, so, obviously it depends on what you're doing.  If you ride for awhile and get a good workout, it's not light activity.  You might want to set your maintenance and light and add in calories for riding though.  That would be more accurate

I set my activity level a light I think (have a job where I'm on my feet a lot) but then add in any exercise separately.  I think CC has trotting set at like 400+ calories an hour.  I just add in the time I ride.  Plus they also list tacking and untacking, I add that in too when I'm washing horses, turning them in/out etc.

Hey i would keep your activity level at moderate because all the exercise you get from tacking/untacking, grooming, feeding and turning in/out aswell as riding for at least an hour a day increases your metabolism so you burn more calories through out the day. then just add in your calories burned riding and grooming, ect. any day im taking care of the horses i put my activity level up to moderate (its light some of the time) and add in all the activities i do during the day. it sounds like your pretty active anyway and working with horses definitely buns ALOT of calories!:P
