I know I've been stubborn lately..
Man, have I been one stubborn cookie.. eating around 1150 calories, then 200 in candy, regardless of the great advice that has been given to me. Then I tell my self, oh, I hit the minimum so it's fine. Yeesh, I'm stupid. I guess you could say now I'm much more serious about this recovery thing. I want to do it healthier, and not eat tons of candy EVERYDAY. It's just nutrient-dense junk, and I should be eating more better food. Besides, it's literally starting to become a serious sugar addicion, which is not good and prolly won't be in the long run XD.
The reason I decided to start raising my calorie intake is that right now I'm gaining weight. Even though that IS a good thing I'm gaining, it's probably not so good teaching my body how to survive on such low calories. And also, why go on gaining and eat around 1500 calories for the rest of my life, when I could go more up towards 2000-2500 and have the exact same result. I mean, if the results are the same, why not eat more? Lolz XD
So, now I feel like I'm more serious about this whole gaining weight thing, and I have some basic questions. After this is how over, how am I going to adapt my body to eating less to maintain when I'm at a health weight? And would a good maintaining in the end be 2300 calories daily or so?
Just so you know, my stats are 15 years old, 5'7' and 107 pounds. My goal is to get my weight up at least 20 pounds. :)
You should not be thinking of maintainance right now, not about what you will maintain on, beyond what you have already recognised in that gaining on this little means you would need even less to maintain, which simply isn't healthy.
Just get your calories up to 2500 for now. Use the lists of calorie dense healthy food and recipes at the top of the forum if you need ideas. Don't get on the scales for a week or two as is always a good idea when increasing because you may see abnormalities with water weight gain.
It is good you recognise you should not just be eating candy to reach your goals but remember you can still treat yourself from time to time - but that's the point. Time to time. Not every day because you're under. Still, I am glad to hear you are taking this a little more seriously.
AWE HAVE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME STATS BUT I CAN GUARNTEE IM JUST AS STUBBORN AS YOU ARE HUN BUT HANG IN THERE IM EATTING 2000 right now well for 1.5 days thus far. thanks to arugskin haha
sorry i cant help with questions jjust letting you know i support us! btw im almost 23 yrs old however
Heya i'm new on these forums but i'm similar stats to you except i'm 17, i aim for over 2,000 kcal a day in order to reach the samish sort of target weight but usually fall slightly short somedays. But i haven't had a period for nearly a year and half now and i can't stand being unhealthy anymore so i really need to try, i'm currently aiming for BMI 19 as a guide.
hope your feeling okay and keep fighting, i know it can be hard but i hope it helps to know that i'm struggling too but still aiming for the positive gain. I know i'll get there eventually...
Hey all, just want to give you an update. I haven't gotten my intake up as much as I wanted to yet, BUT I've been eating 1500 calories lately minimum, and I don't add things like licking the spoon, etc. But by this weekend I WILL get myself up to 1800!! I haven't weighed myself in a LONG time, but for the first in about 2 or 3 weeks, i'm getting weighed this weeked, so I'll post the results later. *crosses fingers* Hope it raised! ... Oh yeah, I've felt a WHOLE lot better lately. Much more alert and my mind is much clearer. If this is how ~1500 makes me feel I REALLY can't wait until I reach the 2000's. :D
Today I ended up eating quite a bit of candy because of an unexpected turn of events, they've been my first candies in a WHILE. And let me tell you, they taste a LOT better now that I'm not shoving them down my throat like I use to.. before it was ridiculous. And thankfully they helped give me instant appetite.
Oh, I finally found a peanut butter type thing that I LOVE. I had hated most but now I found one, MUAHAHAHA~! It's a chocolate spread, AND it's really healthy for you. It's DELICIOUS! Just spread it on a piece of toast, sometimes even add frozen banana, yumm!! Another thing I'm using that I LOVE is hot cocoa! Just make it with high-fat organic vanilla soymilk, and BAM, BIG instant yummy calories. I've been eating much more less-filling foods lately (Hot cocoa, chocolate spread, etc...) and I feel SO much better. Now my stomach doesn't hurt like crazy since I no longer cram food (Pretty much all bulk) down my throat until I burst, like I used to. I was so stupid then.. Now it's so much easier, and all I had to do was actually LISTEN to you guys!
Oh yeah, one last question! I eat plenty of fiber, usually at least 45 g per day, yet I'm always constipated. Any advice please? Oh and if you don't wanna be grossed out, STOP READING NOW!! And also, sometimes my stool are very stringy like, small, or I see undigested food sometimes. And sometimes it's really mushy like, kind of like a mashed banana, gross!! Help please?
Finally, can't WAIT till Halloween!! I'm not gonna have any limits, I'm not even gonna count calories at all that day, because if I do I know I will end up stopping myself. I'm gonna eat till I can't eat no more, and it's all gonna be UNHEALTHY~!! LOLZ XD... (Hey, it's only once a year XD)
Fibre isn't the full story on digestion.... I note that you're going for 'less-filling foods'. If you eat low-bulk, high-cal, sugary/fatty foods with a lot of fibre they'll bung you up like glue if there aren't some high-volume bulky foods to offset them. Fruit and vegetables contain lots of fluids and this helps your digestion. Particular fruits such as kiwifruit and prunes are excellent. Tomatoes also work well. Bananas tend to make constipation worse. Wholemeal foods should be part of the mix.... wholemeal bread, oats, brown rice...
It will improve as you eat more in total. So make sure you're getting a well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water, preferably warm, to wash down the fibre. Light exercise also helps the digestion e.g. a short walk after supper.
Oh, I do eat plenty of fruits and veggies, it's where most of my fiber comes from. It's just I use to pretty much ONLY eat them, and that's why it was always so food, and I was always llike stuffed. All I did was reduce the amount of them I was eating, and add some of the more low-bulk foods.. It seems you misunderstood, I have plenty of variety now, but never used to.. and EEKK!! I've been eating like 2, 3, or 4 bananas daily! I 'll try to limit my intake to only one (love the chocolate and banana sandwhich too much XP) , and eat some other fruit instead. :)
(Oh, I LOVE kiwis~!)
:edit: Also, since I need to get my period back, (NOT looking forward to it :() how much g of fat should I get minimum? And am I eating too much protein, it tends to be around 65-70 grams or so.
Bananas can actually have a constipation effect if you eat too many. Too much fibre or too much fibre of one kind can, really. Make sure you're drinking enough water and try switching around the bananas for other fruit and veg. You need to make sure you're getting enough soluble and insoluble fibre - Insoluble (the fibre that forms bulk and regulates acidity and PH in the gut) and soluble (the fibre that helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol).
Insoluble fibre examples:
-- Whole-wheat pastas, breads, etc
-- Quinoa
-- Brown rice
-- Bran products
-- Fruit and vegetable skins, such as potato skins, tomato skins, plum/prune skins, apple skins, pear skins
-- Nuts and seeds, particularly flax, almonds, brazil nuts and walnuts
Soluble fibre examples:
-- Oats
-- Rye
-- Barley
-- Potatoes of all varieties
-- Psyillium husks
-- Legumes and pulses, especially lentils, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), kidney beans, pinto beans and soybeans
And pretty much all fruits and vegetables. Particularly raspberries, plums, bananas, sweetcorn, prunes, apples, pears, blackberries, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels, asparagus, artichokes and dried fruit. Again, never introduce lots more fibre without drinking enough water to compensate. There is a more detailed list of fibre sources here for future reference.
If you're seeing undigested food, make sure you're chewing it properly. Don't eat too fast. Also, how long have you been constipated for?
You ought to look forward to your period. It means fertility, bone growth and children. Pain that comes with it is a passing thing. In terms of percentages (don't look at grams, because if you're eating a gain diet they will be high) you want about 60% carbs, 10% protein and 30% fats. And absolutely don't set yourself limits on Halloween. It's a fun day and everyone has their day where they just relax and don't count and have a good time. And as you said, it's one day out of the year.
Good luck on reaching 1800-2000 this weekend.
Thanks lalabanana, you know everything. I haven't been constipated THAT long, I don't know exactly when but maybe a week at most, but probably more like a few days. but it's like I'm constipated, then I'll be normal for a few days, and then constipated again. but now that I think about it whenever I do is usually when I overeat on the bananas, so that's probably the cause. Thanks for the info on the Carbs, protein, and fat percentages, that'll help a lot. And I'll make sure to chew properly too. And yep, Halloween is gonna be AWESOME, I'm so excited!!
Thanks everyone!! :)
Rofl, not everything, trust me. Still, glad it's helped. I was going to say that if you've been constipated longer than three days possibly consider a mild course of laxatives (usually a course is three days taking the laxatives once every 24 hours, and if it doesn't help going to your doctor) to see if they help, but for now try balancing your fibre intake.
