What do you know about L-Carnitine?
Asked by mjkillian on May 07, 2009 in Alternative & Integrative Nutrition

Answer

L-carnitine is a non-essential amino acid that is made by the body.  It helps to transport fatty acids into the nucleus of the cell where they are burned for energy. L-carnitine is marketed as a weight loss supplement and as a performance enhancer, but there is little scientific evidence to make those claims.  Healthy individuals synthesize enough L-carnitine to meet their daily needs.  If you choose to take a supplement, check with your doctor first, and limit the dose to 1 gram per day.  Learn more about L-carnitine from the Guide to Alternative Medicine at About.com.
