How to know if your period is returning?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I lost my period due to eating too little/overexercising around last November, since then however I've gained back the weight and just about half a kilogram away from the weight my doctor wants me to reach. I was just wondering however how am I to know if my periods are going to return anytime soon? For the past month or so I have been having a wet, white discharge..is this a sign? Please if anyone could shed some light I would really appreciate it!

Thanks.

There's no cast-iron way to judge whether a period will happen or not except when it happens.   Even if you reach the right weight, you're not exercising and you're better nourished it can take time for the body to get back to normal.   Vaginal discharges can happen at any time and are not unusual.  However, if this one has a sweetish smell and if there is any kind of discomfort or itching associated then you may have thrush.  There are over-the-counter treatments but persistent attacks need medical attention.

Okay, thank you for that. :)

The thing is I've reached a weight which I can so start maintaining on and my BMI is almost 20 (right now its about 19.5) and I've started exercising again but I'm keep my calories high and I'm still consistently gaining. Also I've noticed my figure's become fuller and I'm feeling much more confident and happier with myself. I'm just wondering though once I reach my maintable weight what do I do? Maintain and wait till my period returns? Or do I have to keep gaining until it comes back?

I've been also getting cramping in my stomach on and off and its kind of like what I used to get before I got my cycle...

Just maintain. When I was having this issue, I was up to 125 from 105, so that was a big accomplishment. Even though I was still almost underweight, I maintained for about 7 months before it showed up again. Let me warn you that it may be the worst period of your life. lol

was your last period in november?? cuse that was my case!!!! and i just got it bac..like literally a few days ago and im currently on it.  For a week or so i had been really bloated...which hadnt happened since i have gotten above 2500 while gaining so i found it odd and then a few days later i got period like cramps and sure enough i saw it!!! its kinda strange this time around...not quite a red and alot lighter than i was used to cuse i had it reallllly heavy before.

im not finished gaining but i am no longer severly underweight sooo really everyone is different.  I would suggest get to your bmi of 20 and maintain on that but also see a doctor.  BUtttttt if after a few months at a bmi of 20 you still do not see your little friend i would suggest gaining a tad more.

the white discharge is normal though...every woman experiences it

Thanks for the advice! Congratulations on getting yours back hearing that really gives me hope because I've been getting really desperate waiting for it to return. Yeah, my last period was in November, I'm definitely going to keep gaining until I reach a BMI of at least 20, I'm 5'1, my weight right now is about 47 kgs (104 pounds) and my doctor wants me to be 48 kg so I'm nearly there!!

I experienced the same sort of unusual bloating feeling last week along with the stomach cramps but I haven't had it again since then however.. :/ Mine used to be really quite heavy as well so I don't know what to expect when I do get it back.

It is great you are almost at a BMI of 20, however, even once you reach that weight your periods may still take some time to come back.

Basically, you do not necessarily have to keep gaining weight until you get a period - a lot of women can reach a weight that IS healthy for their height/age/genetics/etc and STILL not get a period.

A lot of women also gain well over their comfortable weight and STILL do not get their periods back.

I have hormonal issues, and no matter how much weight I gain I would not be able to get a period naturally so I had to take drugs to get it back.

I recommend gaining to BMI 20, and then if you look and feel healthy, wait a few months to see if the period comes back. If you fail to get to get it back, you can investigate it.

A lack of period is not always due to weight; if you do not have your period immediately at a BMI of 20, gaining weight will not necessarily be the reason you have not gotten the period yet, therefore weight gain would not help.
