you know what pisses me off?
btw, THIS is what happens when I'm waiting on other people to get back to me... idle hands n' all...
I miss all the good stuff.
On topic - usually I tell people I'm not religious, but that I am faithful. I think they back off because they don't know what the heck that means, which is pretty much what I'm going for, so I consider it a win :P
My stepfather is an atheist. I've endured many long arguments with him/around him about atheism. He's almost as bad as evangelical (anybody). I don't think this is limited to any specific group... it's just people. Some people are prone to aggressively promoting their beliefs, no matter what they are. I'd have a hard time believing it's group specific.
Except for vegans. They give me the willies. (flame on)
Popcorn is the king of the manipulative false promise.
"Just 30 little calories in one cup. Come on, baby, you know you want me."
You know what I hate?
High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Sure, it tastes like sugar, but acts like fat (so the current research suggests). Bleh.

I agree with this 100%
It is not just an atheist thing who feel the need not to offend anyone, Christians feel the same way and feel they can't say what they believe without offending someone, and also feel like why don't the atheist or agnostics or Islamics or (insert belief system) respect their believes when getting pounced on. As I am sure the Jewish person feels when being pounced on by and Islamic, or an Islamic feels when being pounced on by a Christian.
I know as a Christian, especially here, I can not express my views openly without it causing a fight, so I don't. I have seen countless people (here and other places) pounced on for what they believe in, no matter what it is they believe in. I have seen Christian threads here get turned into a debacle because of people criticizing their beliefs, and have seen threads dedicated to other beliefs go without any drama or criticizing at all.
So while I see what your saying PG, I think just about everyone feels that way about what they believe in, that they have to be respectful of everyone else when no one is to them
I know Hooli. You think you and popcorn are going for a nice quiet drive in the country, when all of a sudden popcorn slips you some butter and salt and suddenly you're pulling a three way, victimized in an orgy of caloric ecstacy.
One thing about religion that drives me nuts is the idiots on my team at work who send out these cutesy e-mail forwards that tell you all about the love and compassion of Jeebus Christ. Due to my company's diversity policy, these people are sheltered from the IRON-FIST OF DOOM that a normal company's HR department would slam down on them.
I'm debating on whether I should send out email forwards to the whole team with an educational message about Sweet Master Satan's warming fires of the deepest darkest Hell and how he demands a monthly tribute of ten goat sacrifices or maybe I should inform everyone that we should strive for a strong and honorable death on the battlefield so that we may side with the appropriate Gods on the glorious, bloody battlefields that accompany Ragnarok.

That's because Christianity is the vastly accepted 'religion' of the United States.
Yes, we educated and open-minded folk know better, but for the majority of the people in the US, Christianity is THE religion. 'in god we trust' and all.
It's hard for people with rigid beliefs to be open minded to anyone else. It's not just you as an atheist. Though, it is easier for one who believes in God to listen to someone else's beliefs about God than it is to hear someone deny all existence of something they hold dear.
I'm not saying they're right by any means, I don't think they are. I think everyone should have the right to talk about their beliefs, be it in one god, multiple, or no gods, without persecution or prejudice.
You can talk to us PG, we're open minded enough to listen without stomping on you :)
"Yes, we educated and open-minded folk know better"...
I resent the implication that you (among many others) consider Christians "uneducated". Have you ever considered the fact that belief in God and Jesus might just involve choosing to believe; that after investigating other "belief systems", Christianity was the "religion of choice"?
In my opinion, you are the one who needs to be more open minded!
I normally don't post on religious stuff, because I am atheist and don't push one way or another, but you don't see atheist going door to door pushing their non-beliefs on everyone. But...I'm just say'n..nor do you see them on TV trying to convert everyone so they can see if they can get fools to pump money in their church (back pockets). Ugh...

Uh-oh. Here it comes.
Just My opinion. I hold no particular malice towards any particular religeous belief system myself, as long as they allow me to freely practice my own.
haha That's the problem though. A LOT of Christians blindly accept. They don't know about other religions.
How much do you know about Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism?
but you don't see atheist going door to door pushing their non-beliefs on everyone.
Thank you. Regardless of my lack of religious beliefs, I don't want it shoved down my throat which is what so many people try to do. I don't preach to anyone about my non-beliefs nor do I bring it up unless asked.
We live in such a self centered society. People can't see beyond their front door and worse yet don't respect what's beyond that door either.
If anyone cares about my 2 cents I think it is just a plain old lack of mutual respect for one another as individuals.
What happened to that?
What happened to freedom of speech and religion and the right to privacy.
You rock pgeorgian just stick to your guns and not for nothing but I wouldn't tip toe. Be you and be proud.
I am friendly with another Mom at my daughter's school.
Every time I see her she rants and preaches her political beliefs and how any other view is simply wrong and just bashes the hell out of my beliefs (Mind you she never asked my affiliation).
I always just listen to her rant she rarely gives me any room to speak so I just listen.
Last night I saw her and once again the rant ensued.
At a point in the conversation when she actually (albeit surprisingly) was looking for response from me I outed my beliefs and opinions pleasantly and very matter of factly.
She looked at me astounded and what seemed a bit miffed and said and all this time you have sat and listened to me go on about this and how important it is to me.
I smiled at her and said that's what friends are for, had you stopped to take a breath I would have happily offered my views but you didn't ask until now. She lightened up a bit and actually apologized.
I know it isn't religion but people can be equally passionate about their politics as their religion and it can be just as frustrating. I was very tolerant of the individual I mentioned but when my opinion was requested I was not going to roll over either. I just tried to be tactful.
Why shouldn't you do the same?
Never tiptoe your opinion is yours, it's who you are and you are entitled to it. Anyone who can't agree to disagree isn't worth the aggravation.

lol of course not, who'd tune in daily to listen to an atheist argue with theists? of course "prominent" atheists do write books lambasting a given religion so they can get fools to pump money into their back pockets.
If they're truly an atheist what difference is it to them what others believe? It just proves that a troll is still a troll even if they get paid to be one.

I think she was saying that educated and open minded people know that there are many more religious groups in the US and not just Christianity. That's how I read it.
I'm going to keep my mouth shut on other things I have read on this post, though.
For example, statements like this: Yes, we educated and open-minded folk know better, prove Kathy's point. I'm not trying to point anyone out here, just making the point :)
Personally, I'm an atheist, and tend to roll my eyes at the "God will save us threads". However, I try (sometimes don't succeed ;p) not to belittle people who are religious...it's their personal choice.
CD summed it up really well in her post, #9.
Honestly, I've read a lot of nasuoni's posts. I doubt she was intentionally calling into question the intelligence of people of faith.
