How will I know when to switch to maintenance?
Asked by anonymous on Feb 11, 2009 in Weight Maintenance

Despite continuing to create a calorie deficit, I am not losing weight.  Have I reached my set point?  If so should i switch to maintenance?

Answer

If your BMI is at the middle to lower end of the healthy weight range, you are at your set point and you should switch to maintenance.  To find your calorie requirements for maintenance, go to the Calorie Target calculator, enter your current weight as your Goal Weight and set the Goal Date as today.  (You need 1900 calories.)  People who reach a plateau before the healthy weight range should review their diets for slips and adjust their exercise program.  But, actually, the best route to lasting weight control is to lose 10% of your weight, maintain for ½ to 1 year, then lose 10% more, and so on.
