Is an l-methionine supplement useful?
Asked by iww2009 on May 11, 2009 in Fitness

Is an l-methionine supplement to be avoided or sought to improve muscle mass?

Answer

An l-methionine supplement is not useful for muscle building, and it should only be taken under a physician's care.  Methionine is an essential amino acid that humans cannot made, and so it must be supplied by the diet.  It is abundant in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, sesame seeds, and Brazil nuts, and nearly everyone consumes plenty.  Preliminary evidence shows that l-methionine supplements can improve immune function in people with HIV, prevent bladder infections and treat Parkinson’s Disease.  A therapeutic dosage has not been established.  Supplementation requires an adequate intake of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12.
