Lack of self-control at night.

Quote  |  Reply
I've been a member since 9-10-07 and have been doing really well except for at night.  For some reason, I crave sweets right before I go to bed and give in just about every other night.  Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to resist these cravings or what may be causing them?  I know that I would see much more progress in my weight loss if I could get this under control.  Please Help!

When I get sweet cravings, I go for an apple or some kind of fruit.  It usually works for me.  Otherwise maybe some sugar free/fat free gum, or pudding, jello???

Another big way to keep from giving in is to not buy the sweets in the first place!!  That has helped me a lot too!! :)
I find if I deny myself completely I end up bingeing a few days later. So I suggest allowing yourself one 'something' each night. Figure it into your days calories and enjoy it. A chocolate bar and eat one lil square a night or whatever it is you think you're missing out on. In time, as you are reminded that you don't have to do without, I think you'll find the 'need' diminishes on it's own. This is a life change not a DIEit. Allow yourself to live.
I always save enough calories so at night I can end with something sweet. I usually eat a biscuit with honey lightly drizzled. Or you may want to try the 100 calorie bags of microwave popcorn. The have a kettle corn which is a little sweet and salty. Also there are great all fruit popsicles out there that are around 80 calories. And, if all else fails eat  sugar free jello, they even come in single serving pre made containers that only have 10 calories!
I have those cravings too. Many nights I'll have some fat free/sugar free pudding or a cup of tea with a piece of WW toast with cinnamon and just a slight dusting of sugar. I suppose you could use Splenda instead of sugar but heck it's less than a half teaspoon.

My hubby and I make an event out of it by putting it in nice desert dishes and sitting at the dining room table. If we're not have tea we'll brew a pot of decaf. It's a nice time to wind down and chat. I could be wrong but I think it helps keep us from mindlessly overeating too.

I think erinsmith is making a good suggestion about the premeasured items. I think they are an especially good idea until our tummies get used to eating less volume. Just take your time and savor it.
I experience cravings at certain times of the day too, though usually in the afternoon when I've just gotten back from school. I still haven't completed succeeded in stifling the temptation yet, but let me tell you, it helps if your home has two floors.

My computer's on the second floor; it keeps me busy most of the time and I don't have to think about going downstairs to get food from the kitchen, and even when I'm bored and have nothing to do besides surfing the net, I'm too lazy to pick myself up to go fetch some food. So yeah, laziness can be a good thing at times.

If you don't have two floors, you can always read a good book or do something else that entertains and distracts you. If you can't do that, well, whatever you do, don't face the kitchen. XD
