I've lost fifteen pounds slowly since Feb 1, but I discovered recently that all of the sudden, I seem to be somewhat lactose intolerant. A LactAid pill helps with the cramping, but is that common with weight loss?

Hi
For me, I found that it's not the lactose so much as the fat and other stuff that they inject the cows with and put in the milk. Are you allergic to any antibiotics, hormones etc? Is your milk organic? I only drink organic milk and whole usually..sometimes 2%.
What I've found that's working for me is taking a probiotic, Lactobacellius, it's the same thing in yogurt but has more live cultures. Billions of them, I take one a day usually at night with a few other things to help repopulate my GI tract.
Lactose intolerant usually means you're missing the enzyme or amino acid that helps break down the lactose sugar. Lactobacellius helps with that.
I also watch out in the amt of animal milk i drink...we're more rice milk than cows milk but it's so good!
good luck!

i have that problem! I never used to be but... in mass quantities (ie. more than 1 yogurt a day... or a huge bowl of ice cream... or once.... A LOT OF CHEESECAKE ((let me tell you... the toilet was my best friend for about 3 hours))... or a glass of milk) I get really gassy and a horrrrrible upset stomach.
I became fat intolerant
Get it properly checked otu
remember people arent meant to have that much milk - the europeans built up their tolerance thorugh hard cheeses, Do you have an ethnic background?
Also could be somehting to do with IBS for other ppl, if the symptoms dont go away.
Cut out dairy comeltey and slowly reintorduce 1 serve at a time, for 2 weeks each time. Find the balance.
Lactose ppl should be able to have hard cheese and yogurt.
Antoher thing with weightloss (esp rapid) is gallbladder dieases etc. they can much up your fat absoroption so make sure its lactose and not fat intolerance (as I'm fine with skim milk - high lactose, but not with hard cheese - low lactose0

dhelman, I am lactose intolerant. I became lactose intolerant at age 30 right after I was done breastfeeding my last child, weird!!! Anyway, I went to an allergist and he said it is common for people to become lactose intolerant when their ancestery is from the islands. My were from the Azores in Portugal, so that would make sence for me. He said that when people live on islands they don't always have a lot of cows and that made it so they did not need the lactase enzyme to break down the lactose in the cows milk. Anyway, since turning 40 I became even more intolerant. Taking lactaid doesn't always work for me now, so I just give up the cheese, milk and such. I have found many alternatives that are really good. If you would like I can list those for you. Good luck. Joan
xxpois0nedheart-
You have symptoms of lactose intolerance from yogurt? That is interesting because the thing that gives people diarrhea/gas/etc is that their bodies can't break down lactose, so instead the bacteria in the colon break it down, and in the process of fermenting it they produce excess gas and acid (which leads to your gas and diarrhea).
Yogurt is made by adding beneficial bacteria (like the Lactobacillus mentioned) which break down the lactose and form curd which is why yogurt is thick.
My point is, there is a severely reduced amount of available lactose in yogurt as the bacteria have already eaten most of it. I'm surprised your body still reacts this way.
Kate (microbiologist who studies the intereactions of E. coli and Lactobacillus..right up my alley!)

xxpoisonedheart, I agree with Kate, I have no problem with yogurt at all, I eat it at least once a day. This should not be giving you trouble.

Thanks for your help, y'all. In answer to some questions, I am Swiss-German background, I don't like yogurt (so that proibotic sounds even better) and I don't think it's fat related because other more serious fats don't bother me at all. It seems to be related to large amounts of dairy, or dairy without other things (like a milkshake on an empty tummy...)
I've only had reactions to dairy fat. Not other animal fats. You may
consider going to a doctor to get tested for lactose intolerance and
other food allergies just to be sure.
If you don't like yogurt have you ever tried Kefir. It comes flavored, it's like a milky yogurt and very tasty. It's high in lactosbacilius or probiotics not sure off the top of my head but it's also high in FIBER!!! go figure! i take 2 lactobacilus capsules a day sometimes only once. i had bv and just focused on living a healthier emotional mental lifestyle while eating the same old way and it's just about gone! i met a man who likes me a lot may even love me and love him back and my body responds very normal..sorry tangent.
it's all about finding what's going on with your body. why the sudden change? etc..doctors and naturopaths and nutritionists are the only ones who can help you pinpoint what's going on. that's what they're there for unfortunately it's extra money but well worth it.
good luck
