If I am lactose intolerant and I each a piece of cheese will I absorb the calories from the lactose in the cheese?
Answer
With lactose intolerance, you will not be able to digest and absorb the lactose portion of cheese, but you will digest and take in the calories from the butterfat and proteins (whey and casein). Soft, unripe cheese, such as cottage and Brie, contains significant lactose, but ripe cheese, like aged cheddar and parmesan, has almost none. Only the most severely lactose intolerant folks have to avoid aged cheese. Read about lactose intolerance at About.com.
