Ladies with hair styles

Quote  |  Reply

Maybe it's just me but I have the hardest time wanting to exercise knowing I'm going to sweat my hair out and have to spend 30-40 minutes repairing my style. I am African American and wear a short style so I can't just wash and go.

I tried waking up very early morning working out, running out of time and had to go to my office with a hat on my head. I can't do this anymore.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've relized I've been recently short changing myself by working out but not to hard to ruin my hair. I know it's shallow and I need to re-evaluate my prorities but I can't stop thinking about this. Anyone else have this concern.

What can I do? Is there a really good head band I can get or should I just point a high speed fan in my face?Cry

Could you work out before bed? then you just need to shower and get your hair to a sleeping point....maybe. I have really long hair and If I get sweaty and shower it takes either 30 minutes or more to dry it or it's wet for hours afterwards so i kind of know what you mean......maybe one of those underarmour caps? not really sure but they are supposed to wick the sweat away.....

All I can suggest is do your exercise in the evening after work instead... that way you only have to go home with messed up hair and your co-workers etc won't see it...

If I'm going to exercise HARD and get all sweaty and exhausted I really prefer to do it in the evening, not because of my hair, but because it wears me out and I don't want to do anything afterwards except jump in the shower, put on my jammies, and relax! I don't know how people can get up at five o'clock in the morning for an 'early morning workout' anyway - I'm fast asleep at that hour, and if I got up that early to exercise, I'd be out like a light by lunchtime!

Or else change your hairstyle to something more low-maintenance. I know African-American hair can be very difficult to manage, but there's got to be some hairstyle that works for you and takes less caring-for.

I'm accustomed to getting all dolled up and decent looking duing the day, but for the next six weeks, I won't be.  I find no reason to put on makeup, fix my hair, and iron my clothes if I'm just going to go out to run.  My solution, unfortunately, is sun glasses and a hat if I have to look presentable.

If hats really aren't your thing and working out at night isn't an option, what about a wig for at work?

I feel the same way.  I don't want to work out in the morning or during a 'lunch break' or whatever because I'll have to take a shower, re-do my hair and makeup, and that's just not something I want to do, it takes too long!  So I work out in the evening, once I'm home for the night.

Everyone has to redo their hair after working out or be scummy. I work out at night so I can shower at night and not worry about it being too bad. (People on the train probably think I'm a total skank, but whatever).

You just have to work it into your life.

Have you tried looking at sweat bands? I am sure they have many different sizes and materials. You might be able to find one that will be thick enough (or whatever) to keep the sweat from getting to your hair. If it is as short as I imagine, you can't pull it back, this will probably be your best option. It will keep your hair away from your face, and at the same time, keep the sweat away from your hair. This might be just the barrier you need to keep from having to wash your hair excessively. Check out the sporting/workout stores.

What time do you normally shower? Maybe you can put in your workout right then so you aren't really changing everything.

I tend to shower at night but I don't always have that option (can't do several of my exercise activities in the evening) and so I just have to shower twice a day sometimes-- sometimes in the middle of the day between classes! And it's not easy for me either since I have REALLY thick hair and it takes a long time to dry it.

You can also try waking up super early to exercise, then shower, then work etc..

Thanks for all your encouragement.

I think I'll experiment this weekend with a little of everything suggested and maybe even try different styles that I can do with mousse. Than I can work out in the morning (I prefer the morning because my kids and husband are a sleep and out of my way), take my shower and hope it looks good.

thanks again and I love the wig ideaKiss

You might want to try braids--its much easier and you can wash and rinse each time you build up a sweat at the gym.

I found a product that might help you. It's called "Psssssssst" and you put it on your hair when you can't shower to absorb oils and sweat.

http://www.amazon.com/Psssssst-Instant-Spray- Shamp-4oz/dp/B000EGIFP2/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-4168 216-8762435?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1207692 202&sr=8-1

I've used it before when I didn't have time to shower, but it doesn't feel cleaner. It just makes your hair look cleaner. I dunno, I felt gross, but that's probably because I hadn't showered. You could give it a shot!

I know exactly what you mean!

I have a lot of very curly Diana Ross type hair that takes about an hour and a half to straighten everytime I wash it. Now I could wash it everyday and wear it curly...but that damages my hair and not to mention I work for "Corporate America" and a 'fro isnt exactly a well accepted look.

What I do is I put on a shower cap after I excerisize and hop in the shower and then just touch up my hair with the straightening iron afterwards. It sounds nasty but I still wash my hair about every two days...nobody is going to sniff my head in the times in between. If you're worried about your head itching, use a stronger shampoo Cool

hey, msm house

I have the same problem.  My hair is permed and what works for me is to wrap my hair (brush hair around my head) and then tie it up before I work out.  If you have time after the work out, take the scarf off but don't comb it until the hair is somewhat dry.  This carries me until I have time to wash it.

gosh.. i am sooooo hearing you.... i have the same dillemma everyday when i go to the gym. thank god my work doesnt have a set worktime or else that'll be the end of my gym membership... i spend 40-60 minutes on the treadmill at the gym and spend the next 2 hours showering and fixing my hair... which requires a dryer, a straightening iron and a curling iron... go figure :D

I'm african american also and I think we just don't have the luxury of washing our hair every time we work out. I wear my hair natural and in a fro most days so its easy to maintain when its not styled and I can wash it every other day or so, sometimes even longer than that. It doesn't get crazy funky and I do go hard on work outs, but only work out 1-3 times a week and its spread out. When its styled its more challenging, but I try to get styles that will last longer-braids, twists, etc and I rock it till it needs to be washed. It's tough, but right now my workouts are priority and all you can do is try your best to work around the doo:)
