Lanugo? Please help!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi I posted this in Health and Support but didn't get too many responses so I thought I'd post in here because it is something that is likely to effect those that need to gain weight.

I'll tell you a bit about myself to start - I'm 20, 5"7, 115lbs.  Highest weight was about 125lbs (about 3.5 years ago) and lowest weight was 105lbs (6 months ago)

Recently I have started noticing soft thin hair growing down the side of my face/jaw line.  I was SO worried and started researching online (I know how bad this can be) as I also have some pimples around my chin.  I went to the doctor to get blood tests done (hormone levels included) and everything is completely fine.  I was sure I had PCOS.  I never even thought about lanugo since I didn't have hair on my face until just recently (even when I was a lower weight).  I also have more hair generally over my whole body (chest, neck etc).

Is it possible that this is Lanugo?  I've heard that people experience it a bit after they've been at their lowest weight..? The hair on my face is like the photo of Amy Winehouse here but not as bad http://www.2medusa.com/2008/03/warni ng-to-anorexics-lanugo-is-not.html - is this actually lanugo?

If so, does it go away when you get back to a higher weight?  I'm worried about getting hairier especially on my face!! This has definitely made me COMPLETELY certain I need to gain weight NOW.. I'd rather see myself as a bit chubbier than have facial hair :S

Thanks very much for any responses!

That does sound like lanugo. It will disappear once your body reaches its "happy place" and you've maintained that weight for a bit.

I'm so glad to hear that it will go away! I got to a very low weight (I'm 5'7" as well, eskimo, and 21 years old) and now I am trying to get back to 120-25 like I used to be. I have lanugo on my jawline and arms and even on my back and the back of my neck. My mom and friends say they can't really notice it, but it is frustrating especially during these HOT summer months because even though my weight has gone up a decent amount, I'm still self-conscious because of the hair!

But I know it will go away because a friend of mine was anorexic for 5+ years, got VERY VERY low and had to be hospitalized for months, but she is now at a stable, normal weight and her lanugo is gone! So there's some proof and motivation for us to keep gaining!

P.S. Eskimo, I'm not sure what your body type is, but I have a small body type and my doctor still wants my goal to be around 125, which is a BMI of 20. That way, I'll have room to lose or room to grow if need be later on in life. So perhaps you should try to gain a few pounds? Even just to get to 120? Then the hair would probably disappear.

Thanks for the replies! So good to hear that it goes away.

Coco - yes I'm definitely trying to gain weight now!! I have a small body type too and am aiming for 120-125.  I've finally realised that being a low weight has been causing me to have a LOT of problems.
