EATING LATE AND GAINING WEIGHT

Putting on pounds in the festive period almost seems inevitable but to avoid unwanted weight gain it has been suggested that people avoid eating late at night.

The idea is that you cannot burn off the calories if you are asleep.

But this is not supported by the evidence.

A Swedish study found that obese women were more likely to eat at night, but they also ate more in general.

In another study of more than 2,500 patients, eating at night was not associated with weight gain but eating more than three meals a day was.

Ultimately, taking in more calories makes you gain weight whenever you eat them, the researchers said.

Make it difficult to start....   Don't have too many unhealthy snack things lying around in cupboards and freezers - because you'll eat them if they're there.  Fill your fruit bowl so that if you want to eat after 8pm the food you're choosing won't do too much damage.  Eat well the rest of the day... don't skip breakfast or skimp on your other meals.... and you won't feel so much like eating late at night.

Alright what you can do to stop eating after 8 is well.... dont stop eating after 8... its not necesary, if you consume 2000 calories a day(for example) it doesnt matter at what times you eat them meanwhile you eat 2000 and no more, what you can do is eating less in other meals and leaving some calorie consumption for later night, or what you can also do is eating healthy snacks to kill the hunger, or just drink 3-4 glasses of water before eating dinner so you dont fill completely with food but also with water :)

i think that if you are hungry after 8, then you should eat.  :D  make good choices though, like fresh fruit & veges.  it's better for your metabolism for you not to be hungry.

try not to eat too much after 8!

WHY?? It is a myth that you cannot eat past a certain time. I always eat at night. I am always hungry at night, so I save some calories so that my nighttime snack doesnt put me over. I have lost over 60 lbs, so it is not true that you have to cut yourself off at a certain point, just plan your nighttime snacks.

This is my problem too. The simple truth for me is eating at night has almost killed me.

Ask yourself... "Am I eating because I am really hungry", or "Am I eating because it makes me feel really really good".

Chips and dip are like heroine to me. They make me feel fantastic while I am eating them. After I'm done I fool myself that "tomorrow will be better", and "I will start working out and get back on track". I have played this game almost nightly for four years and have become obese and depressed.

I have been in "recovery" for just one week now.

If you can find yourself somewhere in my story, please let me know. I bet we can help each other, and maybe become success stories.

Cheers.

I actually have the opposite problem in that i always eat during the afternoon!

I think the bottom line is that if you find yourself at a loose end at any time you're likely to eat out of boredom, and for most people, the evening is a quiet time.

i suggest you find something to occupy yourself during the evenings - and like others have said, make sure you eat enough during the day/plan a late night snack and the problem should go away.

I lost 75 pounds in one year and I did it eating mostly at night. I work all day and eat very, very little in the daytime. When I am off work and able to relax, I eat, and eat and eat. I quit smoking at the same time as starting my diet so idle time was hard for me not to eat. It is not when you eat but what you eat. I eat all night long from about 7pm to 2am, BUT I eat all veggies, air popped popcorn, food that is healthy and no fat and low calories. It matters how many calories you consume in a 24 hour period and how many you burn in the same period, not when you eat those calories. I just be sure I do not go over my calorie allowance for the day. Budget them!

Eh, it really depends..

If you eat a meal consisting of a burger, fries and coke at 8pm then go to bed at 11pm or midnight - yes, it is very harmful and you will eventually gain weight. I graze throughout the day and my last meal is usually at 9pm or 10pm. I'd have something light like a banana or a slice of wholemeal bread. As long as it keeps me full, I'm satisfied.
