Late night eating

Quote  |  Reply
I am new here and in reading the posts I have gained tips and motivation.
I have most trouble with control when I wake late at night with major cravings after a day of good self control.
Does anyone have any tips on how to ease these 'attacks'? I do not know why they hit so hard at night but if I give into them the food tastes especially good.

Hi Mary,
these attacks can be very difficult to control. Depending on the time they hit I might give in. For example; if I have already eaten and by 9:30 I'm craving something, I might have a yogurt because I know I still have 3 hours before I go to bed, however, sometimes I'm up and I'll get cravings at 10:30 or sometimes even 11:00 p.m. then I just have to kind of ignore it and have some tea. Green tea works for me. I don't put anything in the tea but if you're craving something sweet you could put sugar substitute in it.
Hope this helps.
this might be kinda extreme, but i've read somewhere that it's not a bad idea to put masking tape across the kitchen so you can't enter. my husband once put a STOP sign on the fridge so he'd stay out. otherwise, if i get the munchies at night, i'll just go to bed so i don't eat. Or brush your teeth - that ALWAYS keeps me from eating more b/c i don't want to have to brush again. or drink like half a gallon of water, it'll fill you up. (if you brush your teeth, then do the water, it's is all minty and cool and goes down easy).
When I get a craving - especially for something sweet, I have Chai Tea with Splenda - just make sure you get the decaf or you will be up all night. Bob Greene says that those niggles trying to get you to eat is actually your fat burning and your body trying to trick you into stopping...or something like that. Celery burns more calories eating it then it has in it so you could eat that..although no one I know has ever craved celery!! Hang in there - every battle you win takes you closer to your goal!
Make two little signs for yourself and tape them on the refrigerator and anywhere you keep food.

The signs are "GOOD CHOICE" & "BAD CHOICE"
when you see these signs it reminds you to think! Are you making a good choice or a bad choice?

I have these on the sun visor in my car for when I'm passing fast food places and can smell the fries. I always make a good choice and don't turn at the drive through!
I like to sip on a cup of herbal tea. Or if the cravings are really bad, take a sleeping pill and go to bed.
