Late period + negative pregnancy test???

Quote  |  Reply

Hi!

My hubby and I are trying to get pregnant, and my period was due yesterday (I am usually VERY regular).  I took a test last night--negative.  Then I thought it would be better to take it in the morning, so I took another--still negative.  But still no period.  And no period symptoms (I don't get many, but at the very least I get super bloated and gain a couple pounds--but don't have that).  Has this happened to anyone?  Is it just my body playing tricks with me because I want to get pregnant (i.e., is it holding onto my period psychologically)?  How possible is it that I could actually be pregnant even though I've had two negative tests?  Any insight from people who have experienced this or know someone who has would be great--thanks!!

I've heard that home-pregnancy tests aren't reliable right in the first week or two of pregnancy. Take care of yourself and keep on testing!

I skipped a period before I got pregnant. I took a test and it was negative..but I still never got my period. I ended up getting pregnant that month.

randibeth--so you were not pregnant when you tested negative, but then got pregnant after a skipped period?  Just trying to clarify.  Also, had you ever skipped a period before?

Thanks for the response binski82.  I was under the impression they were fairly accurate if used anytime after a missed period.  But I've never tried this before, so I have no idea--lol!!

Thanks.  Anyone else???

Hi, ehp!

I'm copying my response from another, similar topic:

It's certainly possible that you've gotten a false negative. It's far more likely to get a false negative than a false positive. Here's what I found on the iVillage website:

"Women produce varying levels of hCG despite similar gestational ages. It is not always a given that the embryo implanted precisely at 14 days after the first day of the last menses. Fertilized ovums have been known to drift in the uterine environment for days before implanting. This would affect hCG levels and timing of positive tests.

There also are many sensitivities attributed to the various pregnancy test kits; some pick up as little as 25 mIU/ml with the average being a sensitivity of 300 mlU/ml, which is the standard recommended sensitivity in detecting the average pregnancy 35 days after the last menstrual period. According to manufacturers, all tests will detect pregnancy in 100 percent of pregnant women within 42 days after the last menstrual period. (Note: study results valid for women with a 28 day cycle.)

The primary cause of false negative pregnancy tests is inaccuracies in timing of the test or in the procedure itself. Following kit instructions to the letter is very important but even then false negatives do occur. The test should be repeated weekly if the woman still does not have a period." Peg Plumbo, CNM

(there's much more to the article but I just pulled pieces that I thought were relevant)

All the pregnancy tests I took (which were 3 days BEFORE my missed period) came back positive when I was pregnant.

Good luck!

Very helpful bier, thank you!!

What is the name of the other, similar topic?  I'd like to read up on this.  I don't want to trick myself into even remotely thinking I could be pregnant if I'm not (I don't want false hopes that I've had a false negative!!), but at the same time don't want to do anything silly in case I am.

I appreciate the input!

yes, I wasn't pregnant when I tested negative. I got pregnant about 2 weeks later. I've never skipped a period before, but after I went off the pill to try to get pregnant my periods were sometimes up to a week late, which is frustrating while trying to get pregnant.

If I'm not on birth control pills, my period is erratic. I'll go several months without a period and then have then every 20 days for a few cycles then go back to missing them for several months. I'm also ridiculously fertile. My first child was conceived while I was on the pill and my second child was conceived 16 days after my last birth control pill (we were going to start trying--we didn't expect it to happen so soon). My doctor calls me "Fertile Myrtle."

I totally forgot about this! After our "first try" to get pregnant with our second child, I vomited at work (the first time I threw up in four years) and immediately went out and bought a pregnancy test. It came back negative but I was barely pregnant at the time; I was still 10 days away from my missed period. A week later is when I took the other tests that came back positive. I don't remember trying again between tests.

When my husband and I were trying to get pragnant, I was up to a week late many times.  Where as before trying, I was alway very regular.  I came to the conclusion that my body just liked to mess with me.

I have crazy cycles anyway, but I didn't test positive for the first trimester on the urine tests. I have a friend who didn't test positve for her entire pregnancy, they found out when they did an ultrasound looking for cysts.

My point is, every woman is different, and just go with the flow for now. It seems the minute you give up on worrying about conceiving, it happens! Good luck to you and your hubby!

This happened to my sister last month. She took over five at home tests and they all said negative. Her doctor did a blood syrum test and it proved possitive. Go for the blood test, it's more relyable. Good Luck!!

Hi!

Thanks for the input everyone!  For some reason I wasn't notified of the responses yesterday, and was busy so didn't check.  All interesting stuff.  I still don't have my period, and haven't taken another test yet.  I kind of feel like I am having period symptoms today (I feel bloated and maybe a little crampy), but nothing has happened yet.  I wonder if I am like bean_7...like my body is just messing with me.  My "dad" (not my real father, but like a surrogate to me) is an OBGYN, so I'm going to call him tonight if I still don't have my period to have him explain all of this to me from a medical perspective (and to see how long I should wait before taking another test).  I am a little scared to take another test because the negative tests bummed me out  (which they shouldn't I guess, because we just started trying this past month, but they did!).  I don't want to get all bummed out again by a negative test :(  Wahhhh!!!  Thanks again for all the responses!!

Edited to add: How do you stop worrying about trying to conceive?  I'm really new to this, and find that it occupies my mind a lot.  Any suggestions?

As far as stop worrying about trying to conceive, I don't think it's possible.  It's just something that you do, no matter how hard you try not to worry.  I stopped taking the at home test, because It was too disappointing after awhile.  For us it seemed that when we stopped trying to conceive that's when I got pragnant.  We had just started looking into adoption when I got pragnant, we had been trying for two years.

Good luck and I hope your wait is much shorter than ours was.

Thanks bean.  I am trying to remind myself that everything in my life has happened when it was supposed to and how it was supposed to, so baby making will hopefully go the same way.

I took another test this morning--negative again--but still no period.  I guess I'll call my doctor if I don't get it soon.  Hopefully it's just stress, and the negative test today will quiet my mind down and allow my period to come.  Thanks again for the response.

My period was due March 17. My pregnancy test didn't show positive until April 4, and it was still very faint. I'm now 9 1/2 weeks along, enjoying day-long queasiness and tender breasts. Just because your tests are showing up negative doesn't mean that you're not pregnant. Think pregnant anyway. Take vitamins and eat well. :)

Good Luck!

Hi lyndseyduck!!

You know, I keep hearing stories like this!!  They say those tests are SO accurate, but clearly they are not 100%!!!  My period was due April 12th and I still don't have my period.  The last test I took was Saturday (negative).  I'm going to the doctor next week if I still don't have my period.  Did you just keep testing and testing?  Or did the doctor do a blood test for you?  CONGRATS on your pregnancy!!  How very exciting for you :)  Thanks for sharing your story with me...and keep your fingers crossed that I have the same result as you!

i feel your pain my period was due on the 12th of april and still nothing yet i went for a blood test right after i missed my period and it came back negative and i've invested at least a hundred dollars in hpts i have morning sickness and small headaches lower back pain my aereolas are darker and my breasts have grown i had to go buy a bigger bra today ive been talking to my regular dr and they told me today that they've "decided" that im not pregnant so i griped them out and called an ob/gyn and made an appt.....oh yeah im having bad mood swings im usually completly nonconfrontational ive decided ive gone crazy and that maybe my minds playing tricks on me but then ill forget about everything and ill bump my breasts that are tender or just out of no where get queasy idk i go to the dr on may 5 hopefully they will give some insight as to whats going on good luck to everyone else ill let you know how my dr appt turns out!!!!Smile

I wound up getting my period on Friday (April 24th).  After all that!!!  LOL!!  I think my body was messing with me because it was the first month I had ever tried getting pregnant.  In fact, just when I thought I might actually be pregnant, and decided to make a doctor's appointment to get a blood test, my period came.  Oh well--period is almost over now, so I can get back to the fun part...trying ;)  Good luck to you--let me know how you make out.
