Laxatives Don't Work

If laxatives don't help you lose weight, how come bulimics still abuse them?

because it gives them a false sense of security

Would you take your diet and weight loss advice from a bulimic person?

i don't think she was asking because she was considering trying it herself. It only doesn't help bulimics because they've abused their body and their body is trying to hold on for dear life for everything its got. If i started taking laxatvies all of a sudden, aside from the health problems associated with that,  i'd lose weight until my body figured out there's something wrong. Same thing. body adapts. At one point im sure it worked for them. plus the whole point of bulemia is throwing up. laxatives do the same on the other end. and bulemics don't necessary want to lose weight, I think they're more motivated from not becoming fat. Basically, bulemics are fat skinny people. people who don't have discipline to watch what they eat and exercise.

If you read the other post she has made here, you would have to suspect that she is considering trying it herself.  First she posts about eating 500 calories a day and then pigging out.  Now she is asking about laxatives.  Girl, you are on the road to bulimia.  Stop now before you get any further.  This is what bulimics do.  They eat too little to sustain their bodies and when their starving bodies needs overcome their willpower and forces them to eat, they then throw up or take laxatives.  The laxatives are really foolish because most of the calories are absorbed in the stomach.  The laxatives clean out the colon where many of the minerals in your food are extracted.  A far better plan would be to eat enough to keep yourself healthy and prevent the pigging out to begin with.

You could also try contracting cholera or dysentery

 LMAO

"Basically, bulemics are fat skinny people. people who don't have discipline to watch what they eat and exercise."

This is an extremely ignorant and false generalization.  As all generalizations are.

In addition, it has terrible spelling.

Don't abuse laxatives.  If you think you need a laxative, please consult a medical professional.

There is the illusion that the numbers on the scale are all the same.  This is not true, your body is composed of a certain amount of organs, skeletal structure, fat, muscle, skin, processed and unprocessed food and mostly water.  Laxatives can be used to manipulate the natural balance of these, to show a lower number on the scale.  You will not have lost body fat so it is a temporary change at best and a downright scary proposition if you damage yourself.  Using laxatives is close enough to amputating a body to lose 5 pounds...don't do it.  If you really want to lose weight, volunteer to be a kidney or lung donor.

Damage can occur almost immediately.  This article is a "MUST READ"

Laxative poisoning

100 doses of a laxative, over a month's time, is 3 times a day!  The damage would be catastrophic.  overuse of laxatives can cause fecal incontinance, or the inability to hold it until you can get to the toilet.  The sphincter muscles are weakened.

If you have a mental problem (as you have described,) you need to get into therapy.  These feelings are not normal.  They can be indications of eating disorders.

Bulimia has nothing to do with food, exersicise, or having the right disapline...it is an eating disorder that has to do with feelings so they often resort to binging and purging in order to cope with those feelings...I guess I get irrated when this is so underlooked as being our own fault when it is clearly not...it's a disease.

Abusing laxatives is clearly not the answer to proper weight loss...Eating right and exerscising is the key componet here.  Abuse in laxative can cause severe dehydration, low potassium, electrolyte imbalance, and cardic problem.  Anything you are getting rid of is a form of purging such as using laxatives...you won't lose weight it will just make you really ill and you can die

Laxatives

Pills or liquid, herbal or otherwise, laxative abuse is a common form of "weight control" in people suffering with Eating Disorders. The use of laxatives as a way to lose or control weight is not only dangerous, but irrational. The actual purpose of taking a laxative is to stimulate the large bowel to empty, which occurs only after the food and it's calories for energy have been absorbed through the small intestines. Essentially, a person taking laxatives to control weight is only going to cause their body to lose fluid, which can potentionally be followed by periods of water retention and an appearance of bloating (causing the sufferer to want to lose more weight and ingest more laxatives). The reason people suffering from eating disorders seem to lose weight while taking laxatives is because in most cases they are increasingly watching calorie intake and restricting food consumption, inducing vomiting, and/or compulsively exercising.

Continued laxative use can cause bloating, cramping, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and imbalances, cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heart beat and heart attack, renal problems, and death.

Phenolphthalein, a popular ingredient previously found in many brands of laxatives has now been recalled by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, United States) due to studies indicating that it has been linked to cancer.

Withdrawal symptoms can be expected in stopping the use of laxatives after a continued period of using them as a "weight loss" method. These include, abdominal cramping, mild to severe constipation, bloating, mood swings and general feelings of fatigue and "feeling sick." In less severe cases the symptoms will usually subside in about 2 weeks, but in cases where a person have ingested handfuls or more laxatives on a regular basis, it may take longer and require medical assistance.

i used to take them almost everday. they worked but then it gave me an excuse to eat bad....they are not worth taking. they make you feel low and **** and you dont move from your toilet. my system got very messed up from taking them...just stay away from themmm

Laxatives are scary. The time that I took one, I seriously thought I was going to pass out and die. I wasn't taking it as a method of weight loss, but regardless, not good times.

That's not ignorant at all...

it is ignorant AND  wrong. the body doesnt adapt to taking laxatives. because there is nothing to adapt to as far as weight loss is concerned. if the average non bulimic took laxitives he wouldn lose weight either. laxitives dont cause weight loss in anyone so its a stupid thing to say. it never worked for anyone

the whole point of bulimia is not vomiting its PURGING.

and the part about being not having the discipline to not exercise etc. what a joke. the poster of that hopes to study medicine according to his page. COULD U IMAGINE THAT LEVEL OF IGNORANCE FROM UR DOCTOR. he really doesnt have a clue!!
