Laying off the Caffeine

Quote  |  Reply

So we all know caffeine consumption is discouraged during pregnancy. All you coffee, tea and soda drinkers...did you stop? If so, how? Cold turkey? Replace with decaff?

Hubby and I are ttc, and I'm trying to ween off the coffee and switch to decaff teas. What are ya'lls' favorite teas?

I never completely cut out caffeine during either of my pregnancies.

At the beginning of my most recent pregnancy, I would make our coffee half-caff and have one cup in the morning and one in the evening. That way, it was like having one single cup of fully caffeinated coffee a day. My husband has a super-sensitive taste for coffee and really disliked the half-caff. We wound up buying a coffee press that I would use to brew decaf and then mix it with his fully caffeinated.

During my first pregnancy I wasn't drinking coffee yet (the baby caused the coffee habit!) but I would have one Diet Pepsi a day.

Here's an article about caffeine use while trying to conceive.

And here are the facts on caffeine use during pregnancy according to the American Pregnancy Association.

I'm not a big tea drinker but I like anything by Tazo. As a matter of fact, they have a really great pomegranite tea and I think it's decaf.

Good luck TTC!

I also didn't completely cut out caffeine either.  My midwife said a cup a day was fine so I did what bier did - 1/2 caff in the morning and another one in the afternoon if I wanted another cup.   I didn't drink any during weeks 6 - 10 because I couldn't stand the smell of coffee but I resumed the drinking once that passed.

i quit caffeine before we conceived bc i knew i didnt want to drink it while pregnant & didnt want to struggle w the addiction on top of everything else once i was expecting.  i just bought some naturally decaffinated green tea & also some lemon for tummy aches, both lipton.  i like white teas too but it kind of depends on your taste preferences.  try em out to see which ones you enjoy.  plenty of people continue to consume caffeine throughout pregnancy but personally i chose not to

I stopped cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. It's really not as bad as it seems. After no longer than a week I felt better and had so much more energy than I had had on caffiene. In fact, I liked it so much, I still don't drink any caffiene, except an occasional black coffee during my graveyard shifts at work.

I quit cold turkey, I was drinking strong black coffee all day (easily like 8 - 10cups) it was easiest that way, don't buy it, don't make it.  I had a headache for a week and then I was clean off the stuff :P

Now if I even drink coffee 2 days in a row then stop I get a headache the day after if I don't have any. I am a caffeine junky lol.  I have tried to replace it with tea etc but tbh it's not as good lol so I just drink water.  I guess it's better for me anyways :p

I used to be a huge coffee drinker.. then I found out that I was pregnant.

I had about a week of 'transition time' where I just drank half a cup of coffee per day, then I stopped completely.. I cut all the caffeine except maybe for the amount that you can find in chocolate cause I told my husband that you can not deny a pregnant woman her chocolate.. ;)

I was struggling though cause I craved coffee really badly the entire time.

At the last month of the pregnancy my husband told me that he would now feel comfortable with me drinking decaf.. so I researched and found that the Maxwell House Decaf has the lowest percentage of rest-caffeine.. It is 99.7% caffeine free and I started drinking a cup of that decaf a day. That totally did it for me. It turned out that I was craving more the taste than the actual caffeine.

Because of that I stayed with it during the first 2 months after my baby was born as well.
Now I am back to work though and I have either a cup of half-caff or on bad days a cup of real coffee in the morning. I make sure though that I let a few hours pass by before I pump again although my son does not seem to be bothered my caffeine at all. But I just don't want to expose him too much nonetheless.

I did all the right things with my first pregnancy and that was the most difficult delivery i had. Im in pregnancy Number 3 i haven't stopped completely with the caffeine but i do limit how much i drink.

My doc told me that it was alright to have up to two cups of coffee a day.  Since I am a tea drinker, I still drink a cup of tea in the morning and one in the afternoon.  I drink it with Splenda, too.  I can't tell you how many people at work have looked at me like I am going to have a three headed child because I drink tea with Splenda.  I just remind them that diabetics get pregnant!

I am 21 weeks pregnant and still have my two sodas a morning...Then it is water the rest of the day.

I quit cold turkey when I found out i was pregnant.  Headache for a couple days then I was fine.  Shortly afterwards, coffee and tea (especially earl gray) smelled so vile that I didn't want it at all.  Now I'll have the occasional soda or iced coffee, no more than one in a day and no more than three a week.

I quit all caffeine with the first one.  With the second one, I limited to one soda a day and decaf coffee int he am.  With this one, I'm not quite as concerned!  Not that I drink caffeine in excess to start with though.  I have a cup od regular coffee some mornings and usually a soda with lunch.  That's about it.  Every now and then a soda with dinner if we are out.  I don't see a difference in my children, so I'm not thinking that in the grand scheme of things it's all THAT big of a deal.  :)
