60 lbs. to lose club... anyone want to join?--- Sorry group is closed
fats: 25-35% of calories, protein: 10-35% of calories, carbs: 45-65% of calories
Sodium: less than 1400, cholesterol: less than 200 and fiber: greater than 20.
Calories per day are 1200 to 1300 and my food consists of only real food, though I have had an occasional sweet....like carrot cake! I enter everything in the calorie counter and also enter it by hand on a food log. I try to balance things out daily by having 2 cups (or servings) of low-fat dairy, 3 fruits, 2.5 cups of vegetables, max of 6 oz of protein: lean meat, fish, chicken, eggs, nuts, starchy beans etc and at least one whole grain. I obtained this "serving/cup" information from www.mypyramid.gov which provides info on how much of each of the food categories one should be eating.
My individual tweeking: I have significantly less grain products than recommended because I can be a real glutton when I eat rice, bread, noodles, etc. I also eat lower than recommended on sodium and cholesterol because I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Some days I have difficulty getting in 1200 calories but I have recently solved that problem by having a bowl of oatmeal with chopped walnuts every morning. Both are supposed to help reduce cholesterol.
My high this summer was 200. On 8/3 I had a doctor's appointment and was 191. I went to the doc yesterday and was 182. I'm in no rush...slow and steady down to 140 which is a good weight for me at 53.
Hope this helps.
I hope to lose 1.5lb this week. Weekends are tough, especially at home, we eat out most of the time, but I'm going to just say no to fast food and large portion sizes. I'll keep y'all updated on my eating habits and exercise and I'll check back and see how you guys are doing. Let's go strong!

I just added my weight to the members log. I look forward to seeing these numbers go down over the next few weeks!
I'm later than everyone else to log my weight...sorry it was my son's birthday and everything has been crazy!
Anyways...261 today...down 7 lbs from last week! I know I won't keep this pace up, but it feels good, even if it is extra water weight and glycogen.
I've been holding steady between 209-210 the last 2 weeks. Some of that's because I was ill for a week and didn't exercise. Now, I'm back to work (after 4 months of unemployment) and trying to incorporate exercise into daily routine.
I tried doing the 200 pounds+ challenge but after 2 1/2 weeks, I found the group to be too demanding without enough encouragement on slow, steady weight loss. When someone gets praised for losing 7 pounds in one week, it's hard to feel good about yourself when you were up 1 pound. When I told them I was quitting the challenge, and why, I got a lot of flack. But I don't feel bad because I lost more weight before the challenge than I did while participating. I found the environment in that particular thread to be too negative for me and they told me I wasn't ready to make the changes necessary to lose weight.
In the past 2 months I have:
- given up caffeine
- mostly drink just water and skim milk
- added several vitamins to my daily routine
- started riding a bike
- started lifting 1 lb. hand weights while watching tv
- started doing some stretching/toning (sit-ups, swiss ball workout video, etc.)
- gone from consuming 3000-5000 calories/day (much of that in beverages) to consuming 1700-2000 calories/day
- lost 14 pounds
- stuck with a diet longer than I ever have in my life
I think I'm ready to lose weight. How about you guys? Just because I couldn't easily do 45 minutes of cardio in one day (I often do 20 and then another 20-30 of weight lifting and toning) and thought consuming 7 DIFFERENT types of fruits/veggies in one day was near impossible, I got flack. I'm all for fruits and veggies but when you tell me that my V8 doesn't "count" even though it clearly says on the bottle "1 glass = 1 full serving of fruits and veggies" and the fresh fruit in my yogurt doesn't "count" then I start to feel crappy about myself. I felt like 1/2 of the positive things I was doing weren't "good enough" for their challenge. Am I a wuss or making excuses? I don't think so and I spoke with my husband about it before deciding to give up. He agreed that it wasn't a positive experience for me.
So, ladies, I'm asking you to support me... a lowly quitter who apparently isn't ready to lose weight. I need your support because that challenge thread made me feel like CRAP about myself. Everyone else said it was great and so wonderful and supportive. I thought that since it was a 4 month challenge, we would ease into things but I got grief for not being willing to make drastic changes overnight.
Kthompson, hope you stick around. We all need to go about losing in a fashion that works for each of us and I'm with you on doing things at a sensible rate. It's more of creating a lifestyle than just trying to drop the weight. We need to grasp onto something that works the rest of our lives not something for the short-term.
I know that before I lost my first 18 pounds or so (about 1/3 of what I need to lose overall) I felt it was just too hard on my 53 year old body that was out of shape and overweight to go out and start pounding the pavement but I made a mental commitment to start at a later time, and I did. Just this week. I've decided that my goal is to walk 300 minutes per week and I'm doing that in hour segments, 20 minute segments or whatever suits my fancy. Of course I plan to ultimately pick up the pace to a continuous brisk mph for 45 minutes to an hour at a time but I'm not quite there yet. I will be.
Congrats on your 14 pounds!
kathypk: No worries... I'm not leaving this site. I'm just quitting that particular thread/challenge. It's the 200+ challenge found in the Games & Challenges forum. The group was making weight loss too hard and putting way too much pressure on people. I got some slack from the folks on the thread for quitting but I'm much better getting support from a group like this who isn't holding me to any standard beyond just trying to reach my goal(s) and do so in a way that feels right and healthy for me.
Love and weight loss to all!
