Lean Cuisines healthy?

Quote  |  Reply
Ive been trying to eat those lean cuisines for lunch at work lately in order to get what i presume is a healthy meal.  But the sodium content in them in through the roof!

Should I be avoiding eating lean cuisines as a staple lunch?

I wouldn't disregard it as an option, but I definitely wouldn't be eating them daily. Perhaps cut down to 2x during your work week for lunch, and opt for salads, soups or sandwiches the other days.
I agree w/ italianprincess.
I personally, LOVE the Lean Cuisine Brick Oven Mushroom pizza.  However, it's more of an indulgence than a staple in my diet.
If your sodium is otherwise low, or you can compensate for it on the days you eat them, it really shouldn't be an issue.
Anything in a box, bag or can is going to be the 2nd choice to a fresh salad or sandwich, obviously.
However, I know I have plenty of processed food in my diet still, and I just make the best choices I can.

One thing  you CAN do it increase the healthiness of those meals...add to them.
Cut up fresh veggies and bring them to work and add them before you 'nuke the meal.  Peppers and other veggies in sauces, or broccoli with chicken, etc.....
Or, if you have left over chicken, cube some, bring in a baggie, and add it to the main dish when you prepare your lunch.

Have a great day,
MC
Yeah, what italianprincess said.  The only thing those Lean Cuisines are good for is keeping the calories down.  Otherwise, they are full of (tasty) chemicals and sodium.  I would save them for days when you don't feel like making your lunch.  OR, do what I do, which is to bring in Green Giant Simply Steam frozen veggies with no sauce.  They are a LOT better for you and you still get the convenience of the frozen entree.
My grandmother bought me Lean Gourmet meals. I tried them and I only liked the lasagna one. I checked them out and I buy the little pepperoni pizza bites. They are quite good. I don't really consider them healthy, or unhealthy. They are full of sodium, but as of right now, it's not something that I feel I need to worry about. So, I will continue eating them. I have a serving of them every other day or so for a quick dinner if I'm not up for cooking something.

I've been eating 2-4 lean cuisines a day for about a month.  One of my problems has been counting calories.  It is very difficult to weigh and measure what you eat.  That has been my downfall.  When I eat these I know for certain what the calorie count will be.  The sodium count is 25 to 33% each, which means you could eat 2 or 3 before the sodium goes over the daily limit.   I find estimating to be very unrealiable.  People eat in restaurants,  or open up cans which contain preservatives and lots of sodium.  I find it very difficult to cook from scratch.   So I find these very helpfull.

I also find frozen meals very helpful.  I dont eat the Lean Cuisines.. but I do buy the Healthy Choice and South Beach Diet meals.  Most of the time the sodium is around 500-800mg each meal.   I only consume one of these per day, during the week and they fill me up. Not to mention, I try to get the ones with the meat and veggies... I stear clear of the pasta ones.  Although I enjoy a pizza every now and then.  Totally takes care of my craving.  I have a hard enough time counting calories, just like qazqsx27 said.. so these help!  To each their own.
I keep 2-3 in the freezer at work most of the time -- and try to only eat a couple a week, but find it a much better option than fast food when I don't have a chance to eat a lunch -

the mushroom pizza -- YUM!
I always keep some in the freezer. (If not Lean Cuisine another brand) I find it helps a lot if I'm running low on time to have a quick and easy meal. Go search for the ones with the lowest sodium content, Kashi has some great ones (my favorite is Sweet and Sour Chicken), and even Healthy Choice has some good ones as well.
Some of them are good, but too little portion for my liking -.- I wont be full enough by then.
I eat them everyday for work at lunch.  It keeps me from ordering out of eating a badly balanced "whatever I brought from home".  I dont ever touch them at home or on weekends.  I find that once I put together a lunch from scratch my sodium is up at 600 just like those micro meals are.
I sometimes bring tuna or leftover chicken to add some protein and give myself a little more umph at lunch.
My best advice?  If its working then dont worry about it.
Noooo!!! :'( I'm personally hooked on the Lean Cuisine Panini and I used to eat them pretty much every weekday the last 3 to 4 weeks. I guess I shouldn't eat them anymore then :'(

Then again I don't really eat much during the day. I eat breakfast usually cereal with something else like eggs or bread and jelly or waffles or something. Then at lunch I have a tiny granola bar, then I get home and I eat a sandwhich (Simple, ham and cheese, white bread), then after working out eat the panini and I'm done for the day, at least, that's the average day, not that I stick to that EVERY day or anything.

Won't eat them every day though. Hey how did you guys know to not eat it cause it's too much sodium? I mean, where'd you read that too much sodium is bad? Not questioning just wondering cause I never knew about that I'd like to read more about that so I could be more selective with the foods I eat, thanks guys!
I eat LC everyday....1 at lunch and 1 at dinner and I've lost 44.4lbs. since April 1st. I would Def. so what you feel works for you....in this case..LC works for me...
During the week, I eat one Healty Choice entree for lunch at work.  It is convenient (and inexpensive) and I always eat a salad with it to make a satisfying meal. Even though they are high in sodium, I am still under the recommended 2400g daily consumption. I usually average around 1500-1800g of sodium daily.  I like them because I don't like to cook a lot (thank heaven for my george forman!!)
