Learn to Run - AGAIN - want to do this with me??
*** New People Always Welcome ***
So, maybe some of you have done this with me, way back when. I started a thread called "Learn to Run" Check it out http://caloriecount.about.com/learn-run-wants -ft27698. We had lots of people join & lots of "graduates" who could run 5K in 8 weeks!! Way to go all of you!!
So, I lost a bunch of weight & then coasted for a bit longer than a year with no exercise & not watching what I eat. But eventually that catches up with you. I'm about 10lbs heavier - so not to bad. But I have to get back into this. Who's with me??
Here's how it goes . . .
It's an 8 week course. You should do it at least 3x a week so you're ready for the next week, & don't forget to stretch before & after. (I actually really like 4x a week & it really prepares me for the next week's numbers)
Take your car or GPS system & figure out a 3.1 mile or 5 km route & then run/walk for the minutes it says below until you reach 3.1 miles or 5 km.
Week 1 - Walk 3 mins, Run 1 min
Week 2 - Walk 3 mins, Run 2 mins
Week 3 - Walk 2 mins, Run 3 mins
Week 4 - Walk 2 mins, Run 5 mins
Week 5 - Walk 2 mins, Run 7 mins
Week 6 - Walk 2 mins, Run10 mins
Week 7 - Walk 1 min, Run 14 mins
Week 8 - Walk 30 seconds, Run 18 mins
It also says for week 8, if you find that you don't HAVE to stop running after the 18 minutes, then by all means, carry on without the walking break.

what is galloways running until you are 100...... is it a book? and where will i get it. i live in india and cud u tell me more about it
Deb, Are you thinking about doing the Jersey shore marathon, or half? I just signed up for the half and have been running a bit. Not enough to do a half but its a goal to finish it. Let me know if you decide to do it? I would love toh ave someone to run it with.
hey i jus wanted to know i.e. if you dont mind......how much time do u take to do a half marathon ..or time is immaterial.... u run for the fun of it
I am going to do this, I will start on Monday the 6th. I will have to do treadmill to begin with at least. When I try to run on the pavement outside I get terrible shin splints.. I can ice them and take Advil and they are ok in a little while but it is very annoying. So MONDAY IT IS! I am excited!!
didn't make it to the gym today but I did do 15 minutes running in yard this morning, with the rest walking. I said I was gonna run todayand I did yay me! hope everyone has a great wednesday!
plindholdt- I am not sure I am the person you should or are asking this question to but I am going to do my best to answer it.
I personally am doing the half marathon to challenge myself. Time does not matter, this is my first one and if I end up walking half of it I am ok with that. The next one I do I just want to do better than this one, so for me it is about being able to see my accomplishment.
I have a friend that ran a half in about 2 hours, I think that might be a pretty good time. She is in great shape and runs often. Its a good measurement for me.
Hi, I love this idea. I am also going to try to get started, however, I will need to do this in the evening. I am hoping it will help me with my evening snacking. If I wear myself out, I might go to bed quicker. Sometimes exercise can have the reverse effect, and keep me up, but... I'm older now, I think it'll work. So, I'll tag this forum and try to stay up with everyone! I will also be working on my tredmill. Guess I better get the clothes pile off it!![]()
I think I am going to try this. I have been trying to get to jogging 3 miles for a while. I started c25k (which I recommend to those who want to start out doing less than a walk/run for 3 miles) and could almost do 3 miles but most of the time it is more like 2 miles and a few walk breaks (at 1 mile and 1.5 miles). I really need to get a bump to get up to the 3 miles. I just have to figure out where to start this program. Thanks for the idea!
I am totally in! But I'm just going to do half of the distance currently because I have a fitness test coming up that requires me to do half the distance, and I really need to shape up for it first before even considering doing 3 miles.
Once I'm done with that though, I totally want to try this.
Ok so where do we post our progress? I went ahead and started this yesterday..just couldn't wait. I started at week 4 though because I have been working on running for awhile. So here is what I did:
Treadmill-
45 minutes to do the 3.1 miles..slow yes but I did it!!
walk 2 mins-jog 5 mins
Last time I ran 2 miles total, and walked 1 mile. Today my goal is to run 2 miles, but in 1/2 mile stretches instead of 1/4 mile (I have yet to get a watch to run by time). Then I will walk 2 miles. Or I may have to run part of that other 2 miles in order to get it all done on my lunch break and still have time to eat! I'm excited though! I know I can do it!
This may sound silly, but I am new to running...
It seems as though there are days when I can run 3 miles, without stopping and could probably keep going, and other days when I have to drag my butt to do 1-2 miles with multiple stops along the way. I'm not aware of any outside influences or being especially tired, etc., but it seems as though there should be some way to gain some consistency.
Suggestions/feedback welcome.
I've noticed the same thing too. I think it has some to do with how well nurished you are, if you have the energy to have the stamina required to keep running. And something for me is the right kind of music keeps me going sometimes.
I'm interested to hear other peoples advice...
todays runn seemed a lot harder for me, but I am doing something different then normal. Most of the treadmils were full so I decided to run the track. Man did I ever feel the difference. I did not do the walk 3 run 1 forweek on but I probably walked 4 or 5 then ran 1 or 2 minutes depending on how well my breath held up and the busyiness of the track. I probably got a solid 7 or 8 minutes of straight run time which is better then nothing. Hope to be back on the track tomorrow but way earlier so I can maybe beat the traffic on the track. Hoping I will soon be adjusted to where I can run on the track soon for longer periods.
I'm doing the same with taking breaks after a certain distance. I was going to try and do it by time, but it is too hard when running outside. Before trying this I was taking breaks at 1 mile, 1.5 miles, 1.75 and totalling around 2 miles. Yesterday I did the whole 3.1 miles but with more consitant breaks around 1K each (I am using the NIke+ for distance measurements and I think it is actually 3.25 miles). I really feel it today! I am going to try and go 1.5K then stop every 1K for about 1 minute. I probably CAN run the whole 2 miles, I was in Nov, but I wasn't really progressing. Oh, btw, it took me 52 minutes. I am slow, but I really don't care, the goal for me to 45 minutes for the 5K.
Much more give on the treadmill, cushy surface, versus hard concrete. I found that after a few weeks of running outside or at the gym's track that when I got on the treadmill, it almost was easy (and I use that word very carefully...)
hey...
hello... i'm new to running... but i do walk quite a bit... about 45 mins 4 times a week... but running a straight 5k is my dream... i had already read about this 8 week program on about.com... but this looks mich simple than the one i read... i'll try it...
:)
but i have a question... when i'm running outside, i find it very difficult to look at my watch and run... on a treadmill its okay... but i also prefer running outside... so how do u ppl do it on track? or shall i set a reminder for every 3-1 min on my cell phone since i carry it along anyway? i stay in india and i've already asked my bro' who's in raleigh (CA) to send me a Nike+ ipod system... but it'll be two months before i get that one...
hey, 2nd day of the week 4 program...and I made it:)
Still slow at 45 minutes to complete the 3.1 miles but at least I can do it without pain in my legs. I will stick with the week 4 part again next week and aim for Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. Then move on to week 5.
I'm so doing it!
but I have a question:
I dont own running shoes, but I do have a pair of walking shoes. Is it okay if I use them at first?
I did that, but I wouldn't! I totally killed my feet and it took a while for them to heal (and not even totally). I also bought not good ones, and that didn't help either. I finally went to a running store and got professionally fitted shoes. I wouldn't do it any other way again.
Why do I get bad cramps after I eat?
