Learn to Run - Who wants to do this with me??
*** New People Always Welcome ***
Hey all! A few years ago I started a "learn to run" program at my local running store. About 1/2 way through I got shingles (nasty!) and I had to quit.
Now I want to start again. I am starting on Sunday, March 11 and would love it if anyone wanted to do this with me :)
It's an 8 week course. You should do it at least 3x a week so you're ready for the next week, & don't forget to stretch before & after. (I actually really like 4x a week & it really prepares me for the next week's numbers)
Take your car & figure out a 3.1 mile or 5 km route & then run/walk for the minutes it says below until you reach 3.1 miles or 5 km.
Week 1 - Walk 3 mins, Run 1 min
Week 2 - Walk 3 mins, Run 2 mins
Week 3 - Walk 2 mins, Run 3 mins
Week 4 - Walk 2 mins, Run 5 mins
Week 5 - Walk 2 mins, Run 7 mins
Week 6 - Walk 2 mins, Run10 mins
Week 7 - Walk 1 min, Run 14 mins
Week 8 - Walk 30 seconds, Run 18 mins
It also says for week 8, if you find that you don't HAVE to stop running after the 18 minutes, then by all means, carry on without the walking break.

Yay for more people!
I'm off for run #2 right now. I was going to do it outside but it looks like we had an ice storm followed by a few inches of snow :( so i'm going to have to run circles at the indoor track or, worse, on the treadmill staring at the wall... but I am going to do it!
Punky - way to get out there weather and all! Hope you're not sore today!
I am doing my runs on Sundays/Tuesday/Thursdays & Saturdays if I'm bored. But for sure 3x.
I had to take yesterday off cuz my body was so fatigued, I couldn't do nothing. I have been doing so much exercise, and now I decided to just do my dvds in the morning & run 3or4 times a week. (plus walk my dogs on non run days). I think I was burning myself out doing extra night workouts, etc.
We got some snow but it looks like it's all melting now, so I'm gonna try to do it outside. In about 1/2 hr. I'll report when I'm done.

I'm late!
But i have been looking at these type of programs... maybe i should give it a shot! Running outside is sooooo hard I feel! But mine as well try right?
I will start sunday!
welcome senoritakel! I started on a Sunday too. So this Sunday I will be on week 2, but that's ok! Jump on the running wagon!
Did my 5k today at 5 like planned. It was good, but near the end I realized I may not have waited long enough for my food to settle. My tummy was a bit upset. Felt great after. My time was 39 minutes, but that's only cuz I was supposed to walk till 39 and then run from 39-40. Instead I walked till 38 & ran from 38-39 so I would come to the finish line at 39 mins.
Then, I walked aroudn the park across the street from my house to cool down, while my dogs got more running in! So far so goood!
Next run: Saturday for the CC Virtual 5K! I even bought the tshirt! And then Sunday I up my time to Walk 3 Run 2 - How exciting!

I finally got out there today! The weather continues to be beautiful, and the woods smelled so good, it would have been a crime NOT to do it.
It was pretty tough, though. I had an almost 1000-foot climb for the first half, and there were a few times I was pretty sure I wouldn't make it. But I promised myself a 20-second "breather" at the top, and then the way back was mostly downhill, so I powered through.
Now I'm tired, a bit sore, and hungry!

Well run No.3 was yesterday morning, 7.30am, with overeager housemate in tow (He keeps saying to me 'Are we going tomorrow? Huh? Huh? Can we?'). Was having a few problems with my asthma for some reason, sometimes it just happens, it was quite foggy and sometimes just a change in air can trigger me off, so I didn't do quite as well as usual but I still did it. Next time is Sunday I think, or Saturday because my parents are visiting on Sunday and I want to be alert for them! Haha. Didn't go this morning because I REALLY needed an extra 45 minutes in bed, and I have work later which is pretty exhausting in itself lol who'd be a waitress? Ah well, I'm a slave for the tips.
I'm so pleased to hear everyones getting on well! Not sure if I'm as excited as you are about the impending 2 minute runs though, Dee, haha!

brightestblue - way to get out there!!! Sounds like you have some extraordinary scenery to look at too, which is a bonus. I have horses & cows & stuff, so I guess that's not too bad. And bonus that you had hills too! That makes it waaay harder.
gemma - Good job getting # 3 in yesterday. I'm glad you have people to go with you. and excited people to boot! Wish I did :( I guess I'm excitd about the 2 mins cuz I wanna see if I can do it and how much harder it is. I'm not worried aobut going up one at at a time, it's when we go up from 3 - 5, 5 - 7 & then 7-10!!!!!! Ouch! I hope we're well conditioned by the time we reach 7-10!
Next run is Saturday, changing times Sunday

I'll give this a try starting today. I am a little worried about the cold though. Sucking in cold air really hurts!
Ok I did it! Took me just under 40 minutes. I had my dog for the first mile but he was a pain in the butt so I dropped him off at home. I got a little lost as to the streets that I actually plotted in my neighborhood so I may have been a little short of 3 miles. My dog pulling me this way and that in the first mile might have made up for it tho. It felt good to set a goal and go out and do it, though I have to admit I was looking forward to the end of the minute :o it is still pretty cold here and the cold air really hurts my lungs!
morphineous - yay for you! you did it, awesome! Your time was good too I think. My first attempt I did 40 mins, and yesterday was 39.
How did your dog do? Mine run out in front, but I still have leashes on them, and sometimes they get in the way. (they're just little ones). I think sometimes I"m wasting energy with them being there with me. But I like the company.
Ya that minute seems pretty long sometimes hey? I'm always looking at my watch to see when it's up. Sometimes I play a little game with myself, by not looking until it has felt like a minute has gone by, and see how close I am. I've never gone over the minute (go figure!) But I'm usually 0:5? seconds.
Everyone - Tomorrow there is a virtual 5K run on here. Even if you're not signed up, you can do it on your own,and then post your results when you're done. I'm gonna do it so I'm ready for Sunday's 2 minutes! Hmm I wonder what jogging 2 mins will do to my time?

This program sounds preatty good i think i might try it thanks alot for the idea, ill post my resluts i think i will start on the week 2 though.
Cool footballer67. Some of us are starting week two this coming week anyway, so you won't be alone! Let us know how you do!
I did run 3! Go me. I don't feel as great (mostly because I got some bad news that's weighing me down) but I'm excited to start the week two regime now (even made a new mix songs 3 then 2 minutes long for the run!).
Good job everyone!
Oh, I also think I'm running a 5K on May 6th for a Cinco de Mayo event raising scholarship money for innercity kids!

LOL my dog is 80 lbs, he's half rott and half lab, and he runs out front and off to the side, and this way and that. And when he decides to stop, well, we stop, usually with me almost falling on my face. He's not very well socialized. I mean he loves everyone and everything but he's very curious about every dog that barks within a 4 block radius, and must stop and pull me to investigate. I think I'll take him with me either when I opt to walk at night or on days that I'm just walking instead of running. He's just too crazy to run with!
morphineous, I feel your pain! My dogs aren't particularly well leash-trained, and they tend to run in short crazy bursts, with abrupt stops for sniffing and peeing on whatever. My husky is pretty good, but he's out of shape and can barely make a mile, lol, so I'll have to have him work up to that. My mastiff/rotty is just plain crazy, so she gets to stay at home. :-)
Yay Punky! Congrats on run #3. For a sec there I thought you ran for 3 minutes! Soon girl, soon. Sorry bout the bad news. But running will help clear your mind a bit. I'm glad youre excited about the new minutes! me too! Should be interesting. I was thinking aobut runing 1.5 minutes today to gear myself up for it. This will be run # 4 for me.
morphineous - At least you won't trip over your big guy! My little ones almost made me fall on my face last time by stopping right in front of me!Ahhhh! And to keep them from sniffin & stuff, I stay out away from grassy areas. Easy for me to do since this little town i live in never made many sidewalks.
hey brightestblue!

Did anyone sign up for the virtual 5K this weekend. You can do it today or tomorrow &then just post your resutls on the results page.
I am on run #4 today for the virtual 5K. Like I said to Punky, I'm gonna try to run 1.5 mins to get me psyched for the 2 mins. We'll see how that goes.
I remember now, that after a few weeks, they told us to run till we needed a break & see how long we went for, and likely you will run a bit over the time you're supposed to. Probably not ready to do that yet, but after a bit we should try.
Take care all, run & have fun!

Did my run. I decided to try running for 1:30 instead of 1 min. I thought that would decrease my time but it was 40:33. My highest ever. Weird. Usually I"m 39 mins but on the other route.
So it has to be one of these reasons why:
* that route is longer than the other one I've been doing
* the wind really makes a difference (it was realllly windy)
* I may have walked slower in the walking portions
* Gravel roads? does that make a difference?
Hmm, I'm gonna go trace the two routes I use again. I thought they were pretty identical but maybe not. That may be the reason.
Anyway, I'm happy with that regardless. At least I did it and I feel sooo great afterwards. What a reward!

Well done you! Regarding time, when I went running on the actual beach down here, which is rocky not sandy, it added about 10 minutes to my time and KILLED my legs! You have to work a lot harder, I'll tell you that! So that could be it, along with the wind, its crazy here today.
Anyway, um, I didn't go today. Went out last night for the first time in a while and was having too much fun and didn't get to bed til after 3, so I wasn't in the best state when I woke up this morning. I went for a walk instead, which is acceptable for a Sunday I think :P

Thanks for the encouragement Dee!
I just did my first week 2 run!! It took a lot longer than I thought it would but the first half was uphill and it was below freezing outside! I think I was like 42 minutes. And right now I'm icing my knee :)
Gemma is right, I think a change of terrain makes a huge diff. Inddors vs. outdoors even does it, I imagine gravel and rocky terrian is even harder.
Personally, I wonder actually if I don't walk faster than I run! I have very little legs and usually take two strides to each of my friends' and when I jog it's even more exaggerated. So I think right now running covers less ground for me because I walk bigger... funny theory but I think it's pretty true.
Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the pace but for now I'm just sticking to the times in the plan.

Hey De,
I'd think it'd be fun to join that program, but it depends, how old are you and where do you live?? cause i'm only 11! but i need to stay in shape because i can't fit in any pants! Right now i wear 10 1/2 in kids section, bout the wierd thing is that i can't wear 7's in juniors/ 1: it's to long in the legs and 2:it's to small in the waist and thats why i want to start the program because i need to lose weight, especially in the waist!!!!!!!
&nb sp; p.s. give me advice and answer some of my questions, please
