Leave the Hershey Kisses Alone!

Quote  |  Reply

As I sit here at work, the Hreshey kisses are staring me down. Actually, my back is to them right now, but I still know they are there.

What is it with knowing that you shouldn't eat certain foods (like chocolate....yummmm) and wanting them anyway? That is like saying - I really love this extra 85 lbs that I am carrying around with me. Have you ever tried to carry 85 lbs up a flight of stairs? Not an easy task, but I am lugging it with me everywhere I go. I have decided that whenever I think about food, I will post something, so that my brain and hands are occupied.

So, basically, I must stay on here all day..lol.

I like that...giving your problem a 'name'.  I think I'll give it a try.  It's better than some things I've tried!!!

Anything that is calling my name gets thrown in the basement freezer.  That way I don't have easy access to it, it gives me time to decide if I really want it and to go get it requires shoes of some sort (not a "finished" basement).  There are low cal cookies down there, but I haven't made the trek for a couple yet.  It's too early in the day.

And I just have to tell someone since I don't talk about it in real life - I have met and surpassed my weight loss goal!  For everyone out there that is working toward their goal, it is soooo worth it when you get there and calorie count is a wonderful tool.  I've learned a lot from using this and have come to the point that I can enjoy food, but also stop eating when I've had enough.  It doesn't control me like it used to, but it's a conscience effort every day.  Don't give up!  If I can do this, you can too and let me tell you - I've never been the weight I am right now.  I must have skipped it or something because I was over 20 lbs heavier in highschool and I'm 34 right now.  Anything's possible!

These are all great suggestions, and I thank you for your input....I will update you all, and tell you that the jar of Hershey kissses is still in the kitchen, and it is still full...so not only have I resisted, but the other people in my office have as well!

You know.. I will also suggest you to keep some dry fruits such as almonds, dates, fig etc., to help quench your sweet tooth !!  or have a chewing gum in your mouth to keep it occupied.. That reduces your urge to eat more chocolates or any sweets for that matter..

Atleast it works for me.. :)

Good luck !!

Here's what works for me...

Don't tell yourself you can't have the kisses!  Tell yourself... you CAN have the kisses... anytime you want.  They're right there.  So you don't need one now... you can have one later.  Save it for when it's a real reward... save it for later in the day just as you're leaving so you can't just keep eating.

I can't resist if I tell myself "no".  But if I tell myself "Yes" then it's more of a choice.  And sometimes I go ahead and have one or two anyway... but that's OK as long as I don't get carried away and binge all day.

According to research, we make 200 or more food decisions in a single day. More research tells us that we have a self-control threshold and, after so much resistance, will simply snap. So, if you're deciding every five minutes not to eat one, after an hour you've made 12 decisions. Given eight hours at work, you've just decided 96 times not to eat a Hershey's Kiss. It's easy to see how you could cross your threshold pretty fast.

There's another theory called the "ironic process." You're trying so hard not to think about the candy that you have to constantly monitor yourself to make sure you're not thinking about it, inducing the thought. Irritating, isn't it?

That's a long way of saying this: Get rid of them! Hand them out to friends, throw them away, or at least cover them and move them out of the room.

Why not tell yourself that you can have one in the afternoon with a large hot drink, say around 3.30/4pm, as this time is usually when your blood sugar gets down, and having it after your drink will make you feel less likely to want another as you'll be hopefully sooo full from the hot liquid...

Evalee,

Great advice :). That helps me a lot too. So much of weight control is mind games!

I am a lifelong sweetaholic, just like my father (who was 82 and in pretty good shape when he died).  I've been counting my calorie intake for about a month now. If I get a REALLY STRONG craving for a sweet (say, a Snicker's bar), I eat it and have a low cal salad for dinner.  I'm trying to stay at a max of 1200 cals. to lose weight, so I have a little leeway.

What you should do is empty the whole bowl except for two, and place the others out of your range. Allow yourself two, If you don't you're more likely to binge if you keep denying yourself items that you crave, just don't allow those kinds of food to be around you in large quanitities.

Stick them in the freezer... then alot a certain number you can have that day... even if it's a small portion of chocolate, there's nothing nicer than melting a frozen one slowly in your mouth.  That way it lasts longer, and it seems like you've had more!  :)

Evalee advise is really good if you tell yourself no you will sure get it but if you tell yourself yes you cant have it anything you wont fell the urged to get it

Another thing is i read somewhere if you still cant buy yourself the food which can last you for at least 2 weeks. eat it everyday. sure you will get fed up and don't want to eat it forever

Another one is maybe you can have once a week thingy

Another one is if you don't eat it for long time i think you will have less urge to have it anymore

Era1955 suggestion is also good we can built it in our calories so we cut it in other meal or eat meal with lesser calories after we consume the chocolate

oh my...don't deprive yourself.  That'll just make you want it more.  If you want a hershey's kiss, have one or whatever the serving size is....just remember to count it in with your daily calorie intake.  And if you need to, take the stairs or park away from buildings....to work it off.

Good luck!
