Hey everyone! I decided to give-up Pretzels, Peanut Butter, and Gum for Lent! I eat these things on a regular basis, so this will be hard. Secretly I'm happy to give them up, because I over eat all of them! Here's to Lent, a struggle, with benefits!

I'm giving up soda- its my only vice so its tough. I don't smoke or do drugs, rarely drink alcohol...so all I have is my diet pepsi!

Here's a question- does seltzer count as soda?

kahlua:  its up to you to decide.  but I don't count club soda as having a soft drink, cause it doesn't have all those bad things in it.  I say it is ok to drink seltzer.

Good! thats how I feel too! ;-)

Years ago I gave up ice cream for lent while working at Friendly's Ice Cream Shoppe. That year, i decided that frozen yogurt didn't count as ice cream. lol.

I'm giving up diet coke for lent. Its gonna be hard. trust me, I love my splenda-y cokes.

One year I gave up chocolate. Ah that was such a hard one!!!! ugh. lol but it was worth it. :)

I'm hardcore Catholic, too & have decided to give up... calories! Oh I was doing so well while I was working, but retirement has enabled me to become a 'snacker.' As for what is Lent? It is the 40 days b/4 Easter that signifies the 40days Jesus spent in the desert and is used by Christians as a time of spiritual preparation for the coming holy days. The prescribed practices are prayer, fasting & almsgiving. The 'giving up' usually refers to the fasting or alms, but has been expanded to include limiting TV/video games or to quit smoking... it's for spiritual renewal and believe me - I will be 'renewed' if I lose the lbs!

YUP! I like the definition "struggle with benefits!"

Happy Lent!

I am not Catholic but one year I gave up cigarettes (1994) and have not had one since. Last year I gave up peanut butter and it was a struggle but I did it and now I rarely eat it at all. This year I am giving up alcohol. When me and my friends go out to play darts we tend to drink as well since most bars have a minimum drink rule so instead of alcohol I guess it will be juice since I don't drink pop. Here to Lent.

I go to college and live in a dorm, so I'm giving upeverything from the vending machines.  Those machines are full of chocolatey goodness and chips and soda and all sorts of sugary treats that made me gain the weight i'm trying to lose now, and so i thought it would be appropriate to give it up.  I'm not catholic, but I'm protestant and like to give things up for lent.
I gave up sugar- all sugar. Processed, added, fake, real...whatever. I gave it up and it has been pretty hard. I am sticking with it though.
Anybody cheated yet? Not me!!! Still no alcohol. And I accidentally ate one hershey's kiss---I didn't realize I had cheated till I remembered in the middle of the night!
I gave up giving things up so I haven't cheated at all. :)
Well I had a couple of potato chips but still no alcohol!!
Oops.  I was weak and after the most hideous of first dates I had a smoke.  Still haven't had a drink or been shopping but geez, this is much harder than I thought it would be.  So if you break Lent like I did, do I re-do lent?  Or say that I messed that one up and focus on the other 2 that I haven't failed at?  I think I'm going to try again with the no smoking thing.  I know I have an out saying it's for the week nights only, but I thought that was enough of a sacrafice and knew I couldn't do it for 40 whole days.  Is that a cop out?  Or is this still ok?

i gave up on alcohol
but i think that's cheating since im underage and i don't drink.

um...heh. i wonder if it's too late to change?
anyhows....i guess im giving up candy, bagels, and peanut butter.

do chocolate covered pretzels count as candy? or regular junkfood?

Mia culpa.  I gave up alcohol and only on ash wednesday was I successful.  Piss poor.  I don't think you should give up on the committment if you have misstepped. That's why we have 40 days.  To contemplate our short comings, what tempts us and how we can change it.  Keep trying some how we'll come out better in the end.
