For those of you who are Catholic, are you giving anything up (food) for Lent? If so, how are you doing so far? I gave up refined sugar altogether, and it is hard!!

I gave up beer, but I didn't make it through the first weekend. Then I gave up chocolate, but that lasted less than a week. Oh well! Maybe next year...
I gave up ice cream!  At the beginning of lent, I was working at an ice cream store, but I managed to fight through temptation :)
What are you doing extra?

I used to say the rosary on the way home from the metro.  I had to add a couple of extra blocks to my route in order to fit it in.  How's that for spiritual materialism -- combining a little calorie burning with your prayer life?
I gave up pop. I ALMOST ruined it at bowling a week ago - I accidentally bought a Diet Coke without thinking about it, then I sold it to another girl so I wouldn't have to drink it!

I usually always give up some food. . . but that has other motivations (i.e. to lose weight).  So I decided to give up sleeping in. . . too hard!  I've aleady slept in a couple of times.  So, now I've decided to give up shopping (except for mandatory grocery shopping).

Last night read an excerpt from a book about fasting things like criticalness.  Decided to try it today, it is harder than I thought.  I'm trying not to say any critical remark, which includes agreeing with someone else's critical remark.
I've given up giving up types of food!  No, seriously. Three years ago I was doing well, losing about half a pound a week.  I got down to almost 170, then I gave up chocolate.  And to kill the cravings I ate anything sweet that wasn't chocolate but because it wasn't chocolate, I wasn't satisfied.  I ended up gaining eight pounds that Lent!

I think I'm going to give up eating anything I haven't meal-planned for the day.
Good point Pompey... maybe giving up types of food is a bad way to go... I haven't had too much luck with it yet, there are too many substitutes.
when does lent start?
i think it started like a week or 2 ago.
I am not Catholic just Christian but I am giving up for Lent anyway

I have given up refined sugars. (candy, cookies, cake, icecream...)

Ive broken this twice but I got right back on task. (once was by accident and the other because i was starving one day and all they had in the vending machine at my school was candy and a packet of oatmeal cookies...i chose the cookies. I am claiming that because I am still a teen that it was excusable.)

btw Lent started 2 weeks ago.
I gave up ALL caffeine and let me tell you - I was in withdrawal until yesterday!  I was a HUGE iced black coffee drinker but now I stick to water and the occassional Crystal Light "to-go" packets.  It's definitely hard...but a positive is when I whiten my teeth, they will STAY that way! Haha...

(This is also my first post....glad to be here!)

i gave up any kind of meat for lent . i havent slipped once !
I have given up junk food and sweets. I am hoping when Lent is over I just wont want those anymore.
Welcome, workoutmeg!!! Caffeine would be a tough one... It's one I know I should give up, but I don't know if I could survive without it!
I am like bancroft too, not catholic, but christian and like to give up stuff.  I usually pick a food to give up.  This year I decided to give up swearing, I swear a lot! Bad I don't even realize it sometimes.  But my co-worker decided to add something everyday instead of giving up, so she added an extra 10 on the treadmill and then an extra serving of veggies, and more water, etc....
I gave up soda/pop/whatever you call it. The only thing is that I accidentally drank some at a staff meeting w/o thinking about it!

Does this mean I failed lent?

My hubby told me I was going straight to hell - lol. He cracks me up.

What is the purpose of Lent?  What does it mean to you?

As a kid, we always celebrated Lent to prepare our hearts for Easter.
I gave up everything unhealthy, like chocolate, crisps, sweets, etc. i did it for 10 days then i had a few chocolates...but i have managed to get back into it and i'm sure god will understand haha!
I give up meat for Lent, not jsut the wednesdays and fridays.  On top of that i gave up candies and chocolates (ie pure chocolate bars, or pieces) though i still allow myself chocolate flavoured popsicles. lol
