less than 1,200 calories-- only about 800 a day

Quote  |  Reply

I eat less than 1,200 calories a day, i barely go above it when I'm at college. When i go home to italy, i barely eat all day, because the dinners are 5 courses-- grains, meets, vegetables, salad, and dessert. At college i eat all day, and if I eat more than 800 calories a day I start to gain weight. I would love to be able to eat more, but I also had an eating disorder, so I can't. How do I get my metabolism back on track?!

I eat very healthy foods, and recently i cut a lot of sugar out of my diet, which since then I've lost 5 pounds.  I would like to not have to worry about going over 800 calories a day! Lately it's been only 400 calories day! this cant be healthy... is it?

Let me know

thank you

ciao

I don't really know how you could get your metabolism back up but no, it is not healthy to be eating that little! You should check with your doctor to see if your thyroid is working correctly. A hypoactive thyroid can cause you to gain weight very easlity.
No thats definitely not healthy.  Im recovering from anorexia and Im increasing calories slowly.  If you eat too little, you go into starvation mode, which slows down metabolism.  I think your body needs to get used to eating more and once you do that your metabolism will speed back up.  You may gain at first, but after your body gets used to more calories, your metabolism should speed up.

I started right away eating 1300 calories a day after being at about 600-700 a day and sticking to or above it no matter what.  The first one to two weeks yeah you'll gain a bit of weight but then your body will catch up with you and start to process your food how it should be.  Your metabolism with raise and if you add a little excersize you'll be good to go.

No, it's not healthy. None of us should be eating under our BMR (basal metabolic rate, what it takes to keep our body functioning at absolute baseline). For someone 100 lbs and 5 feet tall that is about 1200 calories, so for most women it is 1200 and above. Teenagers need to add at least 300+ calories to that number.

I worry that your habits show signs of disordered eating again. Is there someone you can talk to about it, since you are in recovery for an ED?

Here is what will happen to you if you persistently undereat: The Body Neglected

Here is Calorie Count's information on Eating Disorders and also Nutrition (some good articles on metabolism).

Try and get some help, ok?!

Thank you everyone,

i really dont have anyone to talk to about this, its just nice to have people who will respond and tell me its not healthy. I am working on increasing my calorie intake as healthy as possible, because I can feel it hurting my body and brain- it's scary.

Thank you for the support and advice
