Lifestyle Change = Cracking Joints?
I'm 21, female, 5'9, 147 lbs; a couple months ago I was 155 lbs. I've been physically active for a long time and I'm in good shape, but it was only recently that I started making a change in my diet in an effort to improve my cardiovascular and digestive health.
I've removed caffeine/pop entirely from my diet and replaced it with water (I'm one of those horrible people who drank cola in place of - anything, now I only drink water), I've replaced white flour products with whole wheat, I never eat fried foods, I eat fruits and vegetables every day, and the only meat I eat is chicken and fish.
I have a number of diet restrictions; I can't have dairy products, beef, or pork, this is all because these things make me very ill.
My workouts include weight lifting and cardio, but I've noticed over the last couple of weeks that my joints have all started cracking and popping when I move - it doesn't hurt, but it's loud and so frequent that I'm a little concerned. Is there something I'm doing wrong or missing from my diet that could be causing this? Feedback is much appreciated.
Do you get your calcium from another food source if you cannot have dairy?
I get calcium from fortified soy milk, spinach, salmon, and almonds. Could it be that these foods aren't supplying enough calcium?
Is it possible that you're doing things physically that you haven't done before and noticing your joints more?
I actually suspect that stretching more might be in order, but since you don't know what it is a visit to the doctor might be a good idea.
i have had this problem my entire life. when i go up stairs or even just walking around my ankles ALWAYS pop. i haven't ever even thought anything of it but now i'm kinda worried! guess i should get more calcium too.
I'm also 21, and I have also had a problem with cracking and popping of joints. For me, it was due to not having enough (ok, any, thanks anorexia) fats in my diet. It doesn't sound like you have an ED but you might check your diet to make sure you're getting enough fats. Once I started eating right again, the popping/cracking went away in fairly short order.
As an update, I've discovered what's been causing it; oddly, if I drink a lot of water in a day, all my joints start cracking and popping loudly. I'm not sure if this means I'm drinking too much of it, or if I just need to start replacing some of my water with some juice or something. ![]()
