John Quincy Adams - 1809- 1813

Nope. Without looking it up he's either number 5 or 6. Madison or Monroe is 4th.

Oh good call, my bad - sorry!

Hmm I'm not sure that's right lafoutloud was he not more 5th or 6th?

racks brain.....................

oh cheers mooni didn't think that was right

I'm going out on a wing and say James Madison was 4th. I'm also going to wing it and say he had 8 years. That would be 1809 - 1817.

which means James Monroe would be 5th 1817-1825 i think he was 8yrs too wasn't he?

I'm sure someone will say if that's wrong I keep thinking it was only 4yrs he had?

My memory is coming back to me....Madison was the 4th and he only had 4 years - he was the last "antifederalist" and he was unpopular. This killed the party

Madison 1809-1813

The next one was Monroe, I want to say 1813-1821?

I think Monroe was 8 years 1813-1825

Then John Quincy Adams 4 years? 1825-1829?

To get 44 you have to count Cleveland's non-consecutive terms as two Presidents, but he was really only one. You could argue that there really have only been 43 even though the popular answer is 44.

This was pointed out on NPR this afternoon.

Andrew Jackson 1829-1837

Martin Van Buren 1837-1841

yeah monarch but his terms were a few years apart and as we are using the dates he'll have to go in twice. thanks though.

Madison was 1809-1817 not 13 just to keep our dates right.

recap:

1) George Washington 1789-1797

2) John Adams 1797-1801

3) James Madison 1809-1817

4) James Monroe 1817-1825

5) John Quincy Adams 1825-1829

6) Andrew Jackson 1829-1837

7) Martin Van Buren 1837-1841

is it 8) Polk, 9 Harrison or

8)Harrison, 9) Polk or noneof the above

Scratch that, Taylor, Tyler then Polk

Harrison

Tyler

Polk

Taylor

Not sure of their years or duration though.

8) Well William Henry Harrison only served 1841.

9) So that puts John Tyler 1841-1845

10) James Knox Polk 1845-1849

11) Zachary Taylor was another short one 1849-1850

It gets a little confusing because quite a few didn't complete full terms

edit to add: just realised I am showing myself up to be the complete history geek on boards........ what a saddo I am :D

Isn't Benjamin Harrison in this time period

and James Buchanan

You left out Thomas Jefferson 1801 -1809 so your numbers are off.  Zachary Taylor was number 12, not 11 and number 13 is Millard Fillmore 1850 -1853.

Barack Obama is number 44, period.  Even though he is only the 43 person to hold the office.  Grover Cleveland was number 22 and number 24.

From memory--in...I'm pretty sure the right order...probably spelled incorrectly.  And I have NO idea of the dates.

1) Washington

2) John Adams

3) Jefferson

4) Madison

5) Monroe

6) John Quincy Adams

7) Jackson

8) Van Buren

9) W.H. Harrison

10) Tyler

11) Polk

12) Taylor

13) Fillmore

14) Pierce

15) Buchanan

16) Lincoln

17) Andrew Johnson

18) Grant

19) Hayes

20) Garfield

21) Arther

22) Cleveland

23) Ben Harrison

(Cleveland again)

24) McKinnley

25) Teddy Roosevelt

26) Taft

27) Wilson

28) Harding

29) Coolidge

30) Hoover

31) Franklin Roosevelt

33) Truman

34) Eisenhower

35) Kennedy

36) Linden B. Johnson

37) Nixon

38) Ford

39) Carter

40) Reagan

41) George H. W. Bush

42) Clinton

43) W.

44) OBAMA!!!!

37)

PS.  I learned the presidents to the tune of "On My Own" from Les Miserables in high school.

I can remember THEM--but if you asked me the capital of South Dakota, I'd pee my pants.
