If you like Harry Potter, you might like...

I thought I'd start a thread where we can recommend books and movies to each other.

Several book series come to mind:

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.  This is about another wizard named Harry, but it's more of an alternate reality type thing, where the police more or less know that there are vampires and magic workers out there, but pretty much choose to hide their heads in the sand.  Please note, these are not kids' books.  There's violence, cussing, and some hanky panky.  That being said, this is probably my favorite book series right now.

His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman.  Set in a parallel universe where people's souls exist outside their bodies in the form of animals called daemons.  These are marketed as kid/teen books, and in lots of ways they are, but...it deals heavily with theology and religion.  Might be your cuppa tea, might not.  I personally enjoyed them.

Of course I'm gonna mention the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer.  More or less for a teen audience, but I liked them, and I know ladies older than I that enjoyed them as well.  Meyer also has a new book out called The Host, which I have not read yet.

The Danny Valentine Series, by Lilith Saintcrow (yep, that's her real name).  Dante Valentine is a female bounty hunter living in an alternate future.  These are for adults/young adults, not kids.  There's plenty of violence, the main character cusses a lot, and there's some hanky panky.  The story gets monotonous but all in all I enjoyed it.

I loved Pullman's books (they were AMAZING) and I also enjoyed the Twilight series.

For anyone who hasn't read them already, the Artemis Fowl series is nearly impossible to put down once you start reading it. It's about a young teenager (also a documented genius) in a wealthy and powerful criminal family. He discovers another world below the crust of the Earth and meets new intelligent species. I HIGHLY recommend these books =D

Oh yes, we musn't forget the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

*smacks own hand with ruler*

Shame on me for not mentioning them before.  Laure, read these if you haven't already.

Oh, I've read them ;] Now THOSE are amazing. Nearly as good as Harry Potter. Not quite... but very, very exceptional =D

I have to agree with the Harry Dresden Series. Love love love love LOVE it. Have every one. :) It rocks. :)

I dunno about His Dark Materials. The first book was pretty cool, the second book.. OK.. the third book, I hated. I truly hated. :p

Some other books I just thought of:

Nightlife, Moonshine, and Madhouse, all by Rob Thurman.  Features Cal and Niko Leandros, our heroes.  Niko is the elder brother, serious, disciplined, and a hunky ninja to boot.  Cal is the baby, but is just as deadly as his big brother. His pastimes are brooding and thinking up snarky comments.  Did I mention he's only half human?  Great series, love it lots.

The Nightside Series by Simon Green.  Okie dokie, Simon gets repetitive after a few books, but the nasty icky creatures he thinks of are pretty original.  The protagonist is a PI named John Taylor who comes to find out his mother wasn't precisely human.  (Lot of that going around, no?Wink)

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix.  Awesome series.  It's about a young woman named Sabriel (also the title of the 1st book) who, upon learning that her father has died (sort of) must follow in his footsteps and continue the family business of laying the dead to rest.  LOVE this series.

I've heard good things about the Twilight Series.  I used to be really into the Buffy stuff.  Yeah, I know...I'm 54, so what? (shrug)

Is the Twilight stuff anything like that?

Blessings,

Aradia, the Twilight series is romantic and entertaining, but the main character is Bella, who is definitely NOT Buffy.  Bella doesn't kill vampires....she dates them ;)

Well..actually Buffy dated a couple too, yes?  (shrug) ok...anyway I like the Vamps in Buffy too.

Yes, you are right.  Bella's vampire boyfriend is similar to Angel in personality, all angst and I'm-such-a-monster-why-do-you-luv-me.  *sigh* I miss Buffy.

Another book series: The Inheiritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini.

A good series, but a LOTR ripoff in many ways, in my opinion.  Worth the read, though, and he wrote the first book when he was only 19.  Be interesting to see what else he writes.

Edited to say Wikipedia says there will be four books, not three.

Edited again to say the third book will be released on 9/20/08...YAY!

I miss Buffy too.  She isn't even on with reruns anymore.  You'd think as popular as she is SOMEONE would pick her up!  I have several episodes on dvd though.

They play reruns of Buffy on (I think) TNT at like 7am, which I only get to see on Saturdays...*cry*

I'd like to see another Buffy movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar and the rest of the Scooby gang.

Oh really ??  COOL!  Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I'd like a movie like that too.  Thanks for the info.

The third book in Chris Paolini's Inheritance Trilogy, titled Brisingr, will be released on 9/21.  Total geek that I am, I'm going to a midnight release party at a bookstore owned by a friend of mine.  After I read the book I shall tell you what I think.

I started a new series by Lilith Saintcrow this weekend.  The first book is called Night Shift and the second is called Hunter's Prayer.  They revolve around Jill Kismet, who is something like a supernatural cop.  Similar to Saintcrow's Danny Valentine series, but I find myself liking Jill more than Danny.  This series reminds me of Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series before it became so sexually explicit.

Another book I also enjoyed was A Wrinkle in Time, although it wasn't one of my favorite books.

HOWEVER, Madeleine L'Engle did an exceptional job, I thought, on her other, lesser-known novels. They all play into A Wrinkle in Time with many of the same characters and a similar thread in the genre, but I thought they were executed with a little bit more *pizzazz*. Or some other word. But I can't think well right now.

The only reason I bring them up is because I found a copy of An Acceptable Time behind my desk the other day and I remembered about the whole series that was busy being covered in dust in my basement. But they're not anymorrrrrre =]]]

Wow.  How have I missed so many books!  I must have been asleep in a cave.  Glad I don't grow a long beard like Rip Van Winkle Laughing.

We used to have book-swapping parties in California years ago.  Too bad they don't have anything like that here, they were really fun!

I just want to tell you how happy I am that you're here and if I personally can do anything for you please feel free to ask and there are many many people that are professionals on here that are willing to help if you just ask.

Aradia:  We're happy to have you here!  I've heard of book swapping parties before, only where I live they're called 'book exchanges' and are usually held at a library or church.  Have never been to one, but I bet they're fun!

Laure:  Madeleine L'Engle!  I haven't read her books in years, though I know I still have my copies.  She's a great author.  If you like her books, you might like to read "The Girl with the Silver Eyes" by Wilo Davis Roberts.  It's about a girl with telekinesis, though she's definitely no "Carrie".  :)

Thanks for the welcome.  I had heard of book exchanges, slightly different I think from the parties we had, admission is a book that we have read and can give a 2 minute "review" of.  Had refreshments and that kind of thing and we all took turns hosting.

Oh well..thanks for the welcome.
