If you like Harry Potter, you might like...
I thought I'd start a thread where we can recommend books and movies to each other.
Several book series come to mind:
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. This is about another wizard named Harry, but it's more of an alternate reality type thing, where the police more or less know that there are vampires and magic workers out there, but pretty much choose to hide their heads in the sand. Please note, these are not kids' books. There's violence, cussing, and some hanky panky. That being said, this is probably my favorite book series right now.
His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. Set in a parallel universe where people's souls exist outside their bodies in the form of animals called daemons. These are marketed as kid/teen books, and in lots of ways they are, but...it deals heavily with theology and religion. Might be your cuppa tea, might not. I personally enjoyed them.
Of course I'm gonna mention the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. More or less for a teen audience, but I liked them, and I know ladies older than I that enjoyed them as well. Meyer also has a new book out called The Host, which I have not read yet.
The Danny Valentine Series, by Lilith Saintcrow (yep, that's her real name). Dante Valentine is a female bounty hunter living in an alternate future. These are for adults/young adults, not kids. There's plenty of violence, the main character cusses a lot, and there's some hanky panky. The story gets monotonous but all in all I enjoyed it.
Saw The Watchment last night. Can I just say how much I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian? And Jackie Earle Haley was phenomenal as Rorschach. I liked it very much. Again, like with HP, important bits were left out, but then, it's always difficult to take a book and make a live action film...
SHAMELESS PIMPAGE OF A FAVORITE AUTHOR AHEAD :)
Just a reminder, Rob Thurman, author of the Cal Leandros series, has a new book coming out Septemper 1st, called Trick of the Light. It's the first in a new series by her. I expect the same asskickery in this as she provides in her Cal books.

I finished the book last week. It was quite nifty, there were some twists I did not expect, and some that I did. Overall, I prefer her Cal Leandros series, but this one is definitely getting an honored spot on my bookshelf as well.
I do believe Transformers 2 will be out next week on dvd/blueray.
I love Optimus Prime.
That is all.
I did like Transformers 2, it was pretty good. I need to watch it again, though; it was a very busy movie.
I will be picking up two new books this weekend; will letcha know what I think of them.
Ok, I read one of the new books. It's called Redemption Alley, by Lilith Saint Crow (yes that is her real name). It's the 3rd book in the Jill Kismet series. She's a kickass heroine who drives muscle cars. Good stuff, not for children though.
Just thought I would take the suggestion of coming back to Harry thread to share about the 2010 movie... well, first of all... it is not a "good" movie... its all B-C all the way... but if you are at all like me, a disaster movie freak.... then you will enjoy the really great visuals of earthly destruction... but the human plots are abyssmal and the really totally predictable... which, of course, makes it easier to take, and makes the movie a lot less scary than it might have been... which, for some viewers, like STAR.. may make it watchable... in some ways it is a lot LESS scary to me than some of the hairier physical violence scenes of the recent Harry movies...
As for bookies... love the Pullman series... read it to my son when he was in elementary school... he liked them a lot... have to try the others...
I tend towards biography and fiction these days... Ken Follett's book on the building of a medieval cathedral... and its follow up book.. "World WIthout End"... and I like the Reacher character series written for plane trip fair readers... by Lee CHilds... last one I read... "One Shot".. really got into it... these are books that tend towards the macho... my hubby had read it so I picked it up... and liked it! FOr you real ENgland/London freaks.. you might want to dip into the classics again for your hit... I am thinking anything by DICKENS... and I am now reading a book called "THe Last Dickens" guy is a great writer... forget his name right now... its recent in paperback...
Cannot wait for the SHerlock Holmes movie.. anybody a SHerlock freak?
Have to go now... my son is tripping me out playing Jeff Beck and I gotta listen..
