Weight Loss
Moderators: duke3522, devilish_patsy, topanga1485, nycgirl, spoiled_candy, cmillington, coach_k What would you like Stickied???
:::notes that united shamelessly stole this idea from PandaJ in fitness:::
Mods now have the ability to sticky VIP threads to the top of any forum. We're looking for community input on which threads you guys would like to have stickied in Weight Loss or in a Reference Thread. So, feel free to either post here or send us a PM. We won't guarantee we can sticky all of what is suggested, but we figured it would be a good way to find out what is most valuable to the members. ;)
edit: Please provide the link if you can :)
Bear in mind that the top post of any thread we sticky would not be possible to edit thereafter by the OP. So something like the a weight loss challenge thread would not be a good candidate, for example.
Thanks,
(Jenn) Weight Loss Mods :)

Well this sounds like self-promotion since I created the thread, but since it is so popular, how about the What did YOU eat today thread?

Molly's Diet Rants
If you guys could sticky a FAQ/common misconception thread, that would be FANTASTIC. Things like
1. How much should I be eating/is it ok if I eat two lettuce leaves a day?
2. Resources for eating disorders
3. What's wrong with eating 800 calories a day?

How about one of the threads with all the information for kids and teens (all the websites, etc)
Edit: I would put the links but I always saw them in posts to ash_loseweight/wannabeskinny08 and they've (those posts) mysteriously disappeared

Here here!
I'm with spiro and coach. Stick'n those threads would really minimalize the redundancy.

Any specific threads you've seen and liked?
We are planning on stickie'ing, in this forum, some information on the following:
- How to Lose Weight Properly (Various posts and F.A.Q.s from some of our various members over the years)
- Weight Loss for Kids and Teenagers
- Fad Diets and Diet Pills, information on why these don't work
- Some basic information on Eating Disorders
Anything else you guys think we need? Specific posts or sites?
Keep in mind that each forum will have their own stickies, so, for example, I'd be loathe to put an F.A.Q. on Exercise in the Weight Loss Community. That's more appropriate in the Fitness Community. :)

If you sticky too much, you infringe on our member area. Member sites I have withdrawn from stickied announcements of a commercial nature, using up real estate paid by members! In effect, it defeats the purpose of a "Member Area!" Leave the Member's area alone! Let the members decide what is important, and those topics will rise to the top!
If you like, include a sidebar of useful topics covered previously. DO NOT pretend the member area is a free offering, while posting announcements of a commercial nature we have to view every time we log on. The whole idea is very undemocratic.

Hi Louise,
We're aware of the line between stickying too much and not stickying at all. I think what we're planning on doing is having a very small number of posts stickied, maybe two or three, including one that basically acts as a Beginner's Guide/F.A.Q. since we have so many new people with a host of questions about how to lose weight safely, whether or not $Diet_Pill works, whether starvation mode is real or not, etc.
Stickies are being implemented to allow each forum a chance to have an appropriate F.A.Q. We don't intend to take over.
Thanks, however, for your feedback. Hopefully I helped assauge your fears somewhat. :)

As a moderator elsewhere, Im thinking you can also close sticky threads or unsticky them if they get excessively long and off topic. Some thoughts...
- A closed FAQ with answers that link to the posts in the Library, a great resource. It might even generate expansion of the library. I think an FAQ is not well served being an open thread where more there can be much contradicting and unsupported opinions posted then scientifically study information. Dont get me wrong, what I love about the forums are everyones opinions but for an FAQ I think the library would be the ideal source.
- An outlinine of the site targeting newcomers to please read but of course useful to all. I was only using the forums when I saw someone wrote the tagged something and wondered what that meant. Pursuing that is how I learned more about the site but wish Id done so earlier on.
- A sticky post maintained by moderators and presented as a way to introduce yourself and find folks similar to you. Members would provide what theyre comfortable sharing from a list of options like: first name, birthdate (since age changes), gender, starting weight, current weight, goal weight, diet plan. You could post in factual bullet format to be brief and allow many member profiles without other unrealted posts. It would be handy to search for members by a factor like location, diet plan, age, etc as Ive noticed how helpful and supportive members here tend to be and obviously voluntary but I bet many would be interested.
BTW despite offering ideas Im not big on stickies in general and share the concern that they infringe on the room meant for general posts BUT as you mentioned, just 2 or 3 is reasonable particularly when they serve a purpose. FAQ isnt applicable at the site I help monitor and we've had some threads that become outdated or became top encompassing with people picking up on something specific mentioned, getting away from the main point (thread jacking) but being conscious of that helps.
I don't know if this thread has been highlighted somewhere else (I rarely visit the forums any more. I log and that's about it!) but this info on Calories in vs. Calories out and a Healthy Deficit I thought was really helpful.
I agree with those that find it a bit too much real estate to give up. Why not only have one post - labeled as moderator favorites with links to the posts in question. This way, it would only take up one line and we would still get all the good stuff!!
My 2 cents...

I think that's an excellent idea!

there were some posts a while back that everyone gave tips that worked for them. Might be useful to stickie that.
