The Lil Devil on My shoulder

Quote  |  Reply

There seems to be a little devil on my shoulder who can convince me that it's okay to eat this or that bad thing and that I will just have to make up for it later. The problem is that I never do. Slowly I go from eating healthy and being active to sitting on my couch watching Buffy and eating ice cream again. If I can't keep this up for three weeks how am I going to keep it up for the rest of my life?

Also it pisses em off that restuarants don't put the nutritional facts on the menu at restaurants and only have a few of the items on their online nutritional facts page.

Yep I have that devil as well.  I call it the fat girl.  The fat girl likes me to be fat too so she tries to convince me to do things that are unhealthy and will keep me fat.

I don't know how to shut her up completely yet, but she seems to lack stamina and I can wear her down by getting back on track as soon as I realize I've had a misstep.

Yeah restaurants piss me off too.  I wish the cafeteria at work would say what was in stuff too.   In the meantime there is always subway.

Keep your chin up and wear that Devil down!

Double pissed off agree :)

Small resturants, most items, you can estimate fairly well the calories. For big restaurants, chains, that refuse - I will not go there.

Applebees - I don't give a rat's ..rear end... that they offer some WW points info to a small amount of their items. I c&p this from their site (WHICH btw, is hard to find)

We provide Weight Watchers Points® values on all of our Weight Watchers® items. We do not provide nutritional information on other Applebee's® items, except where required by law.

Have you ever tried edamame? I find them a perfect snack and they also do well watching TV. A lot of people do popcorn, but I can't stand the stuff. I got a pound of them for $2 at Whole Foods (grocery stores have them also, but a tiny bit more expensive at least here).

let me also suggest.... 2 things.... 1) weigh all your food 2) log your food before you eat it. It helps me keep from doing things like you mentioned, cause i'm home almost all day.

the little shoulder monster slowly shuts up, idk if he ever really goes away, but another voice starts to speak louder of encouragement and good choices, and you listen to that one WAY more.

How unhelpful are weight watchers points. I think they probably just paid applebees a lot of money to put it on the menu. It's not really there to help anyone just promote weight watchers.

I refuse to eat at Applebees for this very reason.  A local chain or mom and pop restaurant?  Sure, I can't expect them to send off their foods to be tested.

But if Ruby Tuesdays and Chili's can post monthly updates on their web page of the nutritional info (including that of specials and limited time offers), then Applebee's can too.  Hell, their menus are pretty much exactly the same anyway.

But I won't eat at Applebees' on principle.

I do best if I don't keep that stuff around the house. My husband and daughter like their snacks, I just buy things I don't like for them.  I try to keep healthy snacks around.

Okay...today at work is our Holiday Open House.  We buy Krispy Kreme donuts and give them away, no problem, they are out in the store and I am back in the office.  BUT someone brought a box back for the office crew and it is sitting in the kitchenette.  No lil' devil crying but I can hear the muffled cry of a dozen (although I'm sure most of them are missing by now) glazed donuts saying "Cody, get us out of here. " LOL Actually, I've been here for 4 1/2 hours and I haven't touched one yet.  Was tempted about 30 minutes ago, so I ate lunch instead.  A nice healthy, turkey sandwich, tabouli  and pickles on the side.  I'm currently full and out of danger.  However, when my stomagh empties... "Please free us from this box!!!" LOL I looked each donut has 190 calories, 100 from fat.  There are 11 grams of fat packed into one tiny package.  Whew!  If the snacking need gets the better of me, I have a nice apple or if I decide I want to build in some sugar...we have some wonderful snack size popcorn balls that although they are high in sugar have almost no fat.  Every other year I have polished off at least half a dozen donuts by myself. This year my plan was to eat only one...until I read the fat content.  Now, I think I will avoid them instead.Laughing

Hillhicks,

Yep, that little guy comes to visit me, too.  He whispers,  It's OK.. We'll just eat one.  Then --oh let's eat another...

Oh.  I made the mistake of eating a few of the Applebees buffalo wings before I knew that a serving is 1700 calories.   I could have had several orders of onion rings for that!!!!

Lesson learned.

Cody,

You are my hero.  I don't know if I could resist Krispy Kremes.  There isn't one any closer to me than 100 miles.  and they are SO ultimately wonderful mouthful of deliciousness.

Congrats.

I've started to look up every menu I can before I got to a restaurant and decide what I can eat or make a list of acceptable choices before I go. Olive Garden is a dieter's mortal enemy, FYI. haha

If you want to go out to eat, try Subway. Another good choice is Hooya! over by Pancho's/IHOP/UNT. Just be sure to go with the veggie burrito (if you want cheese, ask them for very light) and get black beans instead of refried. Excellent food. *drools*

Flirtin mom - my problem with buying snacks for the kids that I don't like is that I don't think I have met an unhealthy snack that I don't like. Lol

My little devil has a tendency to say things like, "that handful of chips is only one serving, really it is" when I know that is more like 3-5 and while I can allow for 150ish calories 450-750 calories for chips is just too much.

I have to be religous about measuring everything so that I can be honest with my food log.

I wouldnt be able to resist a krispie kreme... no way. Thats just one of those things for me. Thankfully I'm not ever in that situation anymore :)

Eating out isn't usually too hard either - we hardly ever do it. Hillhicks I looked up what I would normally get the AppleBees and it wasn't bad... unless you add in the southwestern ranch sauce with it - and that alone would add like 800 calories?! and I used to think I was doing good getting it on the side, but still eating it all :D

Currently this little shoulder devil is telling me to eat whatever I fix for the kids, in an "adult" size portion or I am going to starve to death lol Funny enough, watching Man Vs Food grosses me out by the amount of food and trying to mentally calculate the calories he is consuming, enough that it kills any desire I have to eat! I need to record more shows :D

"Super Size Me" is another one for ruining a good appetite. I watched only part of it with my son the other day and I don't think I will be wanting McDonalds again anytime soon.

LOL Someone who understand the power of the Krispy Kreme.  :)  I did splurge and have a sugar free wint-o-green lifesaver (ROFLMBO), now that is kind of like a heavenly donut right? I mean it's round, it has a hole in the middle...anyone wanna help me here. Laughing

I'm just glad we don't get the glazed ones with the chocolate on top anymore.  I'm not sure I would be able to resist that.  That is a situation where I may be in trouble. Laughing

When I used to cook for the kids, it was so easy to take a few bites off their plates and believe that what I was eating wasn't many calories.  Boy-o-boy, was I wrong.  Thank goodness they are all grown up and out of the house.  Now I have so much more control over the food that comes into the house and is stored in the pantry.

I haven't eaten at McDonald's since seeing SuperSize me.  In fact, a rarely eat fast food and if I do it is usually Subway or Chipotles.  I absolutely agree with you.

Cody, and others: Like you I really enjoy a good donut.  We have Tim Horton's outlets (Canadian brand) all over the country.  Frankly they are on almost every street corner.  Of course there is one 2 blocks away from me.  They also have healthy sandwiches, and I can actually go in and get one, without succumbing to the doughnut threat.  The same cannot be said for buffets.  I swear there is a whole parade of little devils helping me out there.  It is not the quantity of each individual food (usually a tablespoon) but the enormous selection, since I like pretty well everything.  When I get back to the table, surprise!, there's a big flat pancake of food covering the plate from rim to rim.  Not appetizing?  Oh yes it is!  So then I slyly approach the dessert section: there's jello, but not diet; fruit salad; then I throw all sensible reasoning out the window.  Might as well have a tiny piece of cake, bread pudding, and so on.  My table companions look at me as if I've lost my mind - the little devils are eating it.  I have no shame, so I eat the sweets anyway.  It's not long afterwards that I have the nerve to groan "I ate too much".   I'm surprised that they let me back in the car for the ride home.  As much as possible I now avoid large, long rows of food.  No kidding
