On the line between Plus and Regular *sigh*

Quote  |  Reply

I can't shop at plus stores anymore (yay!) but I can't really shop at regular stores yet (boo!).

I'm finding it very hard to get a decent work shirt.  In the plus sizes they're boxy and too big at 14.  At regular stores a 14 or XL is tight across the chest and in the arms.

My bottom size is 10/12, but my top size is still 14/16.  I'm 38DD.

It's very frustrating.  Any suggestions?  I need some decent business-casual / business formal clothes without breaking my budget.

Thanks!

I have the same problem buying tops because my arms are where I seem to carry a lot of weight.

Maybe you can shop at a discount store like Ross or Marshalls or TJMaxx where there would be a large variety of different tops from different stores and designers?  That way, the sizes and cuts will vary, too.  You will need patience to shop in these places- it's not as easy as walking into a store with nice displays on the walls to catch your eye to the attractive pieces.  But your trip just might reveal a treasure or two, and at a reasonable price!

Happy shopping!  Isn't that supposed to be the fun part of this weight loss journey we are all on?  LOL

Is it possible to buy the larger tops, then take them in at the waist a bit?  I think in most cases it would just take a line of stitching along each side seam to nip it in a bit.  I'm not a big seamstress, but it is something I have done once or twice.

Along the same lines, wearing longer shirts with a belt or tucked in might help as well.  And many "regular" sections go up to 16/18 or XXL.

I'm not sure the requirements of your "work shirts", though.

Windjade,

Top heavy girls unite! LOL.

Try looking at different cuts of shirts.  Shirt sizes will vary by designer, so you'll have to keep shopping in both departments, but try looking for shirts that nip in at the waist so you won't look boxy.  Shirt that have empire waits (with a seam right under the bust) will emphasize your waist.  So will button down shirts that have darts on the sides and front.  Depending on how business-y your office is, a wrap shirt or faux wrap also gives you room in the bust and fits tighter at the waist.  Sometimes those have a little too much cleavage, though, so it's a trial and error process.

Try on lots!  It's exhausting, but you're essentially learning to dress an entirely new body, so it will take some time to find out what styles work best for you now.
