A little advice?

Quote  |  Reply
Alright, let me start by asking you all not to yell at me.

I started my weightloss last June and I've lost 94-ish pounds since then without working out... at all.
I now have the inclination to start a weight-training / cardio routine and I'm looking for suggestions on a starter routine that I can build up on as it gets easier. I also need to be able to do this from home because I can't afford a gym right now. (I do own a treadmill).

Thanks in advance.

Anyone?

I would suggest perhaps getting a few DVDs and some starter weights and try out different things.  I know that there are weight training DVDs you can buy that you could use until you learn how to do things properly.  If you don't have access to a gym, perhaps you have a friend who weight trains and who could help pick some things out or give you some pointers.   If you're really new to exercise, be careful not to overdo things too much at the beginning, or you could injure yourself.  Listen to your body.  Try walking for 30-45 minutes at a pace that keeps you breathing hard but not dying.  Then when that becomes easy, increase the incline, increase the speed, increase the time, or all three, whatever you find you like better.  One thing I like to do on treadmills are intervals.  If you've never run before, try walking for a few minutes then run for 1-2 minutes, alternating as long as you can.  This is a good way to start running.  Another great tool is a heart rate monitor.  This can really help you improve your workouts, because you have a concrete reflection of how hard you're working.

One thing that I swear by is pilates.  Perhaps try a new DVD every week from a video store so you don't have to invest as much money before trying it until you find ones you really like.

Go to Exercise -> Beginner's Corner.  Hope that helps.

Congrats! You look great =)

Cardio: Just start walking, outside or on your treadmill, as often as you can. Aim for everyday, or 6 times a week... Maybe once or twice a week, do it for time. Try to go farther, faster each "timed walk". And stretch.

Strength - I agree with PP - a DVD or 2...I like The Firm, it comes with weights.

Good luck.
