So here's my problem. I'm boney. I'm technically a decent weight. But even though you can see my ribs and my pelvis bones, I've still got a considerable amount of pudge? What can I do??

tone up, build some muscles.

not ever a good sign to be able to see ribs and pelvic bones

u are likely in starvation mode, have lost a lot of muscle, leaving behind what looks like fat but it is unsupported by muscle that u have lost, making u look skinny fat

what are ur stats and cal intake?

If you're a decent weight (BMI between 20 and 25) make sure you're getting adequate nutrition i.e. 2000 cals a day average of good nourishing foods, and that you're doing some strengthening exercises to tone up your muscles.  A 'clean' diet can also help firm up your body.  If you're under a BMI of 20, you might find you look better with more flesh on your bones and less loose skin....  then you might look "skinny and hot and tan & fabulous!!!" (quote)... rather than 'emaciated'.

runhaleyrun-

no disrespect to the above poster, but i dont think it's true that it's "never good to see rib or pelvic bones".

i've never had any type of eating disorder, and have always been able to see my ribs.  i was made fun of for years because of it, and constantly had people asking if i was anorexic in middle school, which, in terms of body-image, may be just as damaging as being told you're too fat.

i went on a weight-gaining mission in high school to try to appear more "normal".  but even with added weight, the bones were still visible.

i have a bmi of 21, which is in the "normal" range.  it's just a matter of storing fat in different places than others.  My fat goes to my tummy and thighs.  For other people, it's a more even spread, i think.

See, I disagree kjto.

I'm not starving. Even at my heaviest of 135, my bones were visable. People in my family are just... boney. My dad is fifty and has a beer gut & you can see his ribs on his sides and his pelvic bones. It's really how I'm built.

I'm not looking for people to tell me I'm thin, I know this. I'm not looking for people to tell me EAT!!!! EAT OR DIE! EAT NOW! GAIN WEIGHT! YOU'RE IN THE LOW END OF NORMAL!! That's not what I want. I want real information on what exercises I can do to build muscle and strengthen the muscle I have. I'm not anorexic, I don't need people to tell me to eat 2,000 calories a day. no thanks. I've never eaten that much in a day. I'm not training to run a marathon, to go all Man vs. Wild, or for hibernation... there is no reason for me to eat that much. I'm a female.

SO! With this all said, if anyone has any useful information, please, forward it my way. If you're going to tell me I'm boney & gross, I'm not.oh & comictuesday, thanks. I'm glad you aren't just cramming e.d. information down my throat & telling me to eat. It's a pleasant change.

The average, reasonably active adult female over the age of 21 needs 1900-2100 cals a day to be in good health and maintain her weight.  If someone is under 21 that number typically increases because younger women also need more energy for their bodies to develop healthily.  If a woman is training to run a marathon she might need 3500-4000 cals a day.

"I want real information on what exercises I can do to build muscle....."

You physically can't build muscle if you're taking in too few calories.  You can exercise, of course, but you need extra energy (calories) to convert to muscle bulk.  No-one's calling you 'boney' I don't think, except yourself in the opening post.   If you're being so defensive because people tell you frequently that you're too thin & need to gain a little weight, maybe you should start listening?.... rather than suggesting that anyone who says so is 'fat'   (That's what they call 'sour grapes' and also 'immature')

Charming.

If you're talking about flab, the only way to eliminate that is to add some muscle.

Try stumptuous.com.

There are people on this site who can be alarmist sometimes.  The term "starvation mode" gets tossed around on this site a lot.  However, it's better to be worried excessively than to let unhealthy ideas fester in someone's head.  They do it out of concern, not out of malice or jealousy.

If you are eating a healthy amount, and not trying to slim down to waif-size (and only you can know if that's the case), then more power to you.  of course, anyone reading this who IS severely restricting their eating, I of course suggest seeking treatment.

if you are at a good/healthy weight, the only thing you can really do is exercise- try to tone up your abs with crunches and such, if that is where the pudge seems to be located.  there's no such thing as "spot" weightloss, but you CAN target muscle groups in your workouts.

It has pretty much been said, but if you do strength training you may find that you can achieve the look you want by lowering your body fat %.  It's not about your weight.  It doesn't matter if you can see your bones.  A women who is 125 lbs with 12% body fat would look a whole lot more 'fit' than another women who is 125 lbs with 25% body fat (a.k.a. skinny fat).  1 lbs of fat weighs the same as 1 lbs of muscle, but muscle is more dense (and doesn't jiggle).  It takes up less space which means at the same weight you would look more toned and fit.  Often women (& men) drop to their goal weight only to find that they don't look like they imagined they would when they picked the weight.  They have become skinny fat.  The weight is at a healthy level, but without lowering the body fat %, they still appear flabby/plump.

The best way to build/maintain muscle while lowering your body fat % is strength training & diet.

You know what- I should report you. You don't know me or anything about me. & you're right- that is silly & judgemental of you. Nothing about any of that says EATING DISORDER. It says I'm a 20 year old woman who is concerned about the way she looks.

ha, go report me.

''I've come to the conclusion that I'm called a skinny bitch because of something I've called "The Fat Girl Syndrome." Thick girls who love their curves (& they should.. they have to live with them...) get their panties in a wad because I want to change the way my body looks. WIth fat girl syndrome comes dirty looks, bad attitudes, and big girls stuffed into teeny weeny bikinis I debate wearing. That's great, love your body. I  can think I look fat in a bathing suit because I'm changing it. I'm not COMPLACENT with things the way they are.''

sound familiar? its urs too. and you call ME silly and judgemental. you are truly idiotic.  and btw, im 5ft 2 and 105....not a sufferer of FAT GIRL SYDROME peeved off by being the only one who loves my curvy body stuffed into a bikini.

and u no what, those women u describe, i bet they arent plagued by a bizarre complex of yellow apples and oatmeal.

get a life, and a therapist.

Report me for what I'm about to say, go ahead and do it.

That's my personal journal, actually. Not a forum.

I do not give a **** what size you are. You have no idea what oatmeal & yellow apples have to do with anything. You don't know that I ate oatmeal every morning for 3 months straight or that I think yellow apples are bitter and ate them for an afternoon snack for the next 3 months. You have no idea about any of these things- or about me. So why don't you get your curvy ass fat pudgy short girl self out of my business, heiffer.

Get a therapis and while you're at it- go see a weight loss doctor.

wow. i am LAUGHING right now. youre crazy.

U deserve to be riddled with EVERY SINGLE ed and body image disorder out there. u sad, bitter, unhappy, angry little girl.

i am a heiffer, with a BMI lower than yours? sorry i struck a nerve there sweetie.

u have issues and have no place on CC which is a HEALTH-PROMOTING site.

agreed, thanks amethystgirl.

Whatev. You're probably some morbidly obese fat chick eating a box of oreo's as I'm typing this.

Hope you're happy. I'd much rather be boney & thin and accused of eating disorders than fat- like you. Thanks darling- you just gave me a much needed boost of confidence. :)

Oh my god. You were so mean to everyone. D:

At first I was definitely on your side, but then when you attacked someone who is THINNER THAN YOU for being fat, I realized you're delusional (and a jerk).

I will chime in on the bones issue.

Your weight does not care if it sits over your ribs or your hips.  I am at a BMI of 29 and you can see every rib on my body.  I just dont carry my weight on my torso.
