A little help for bulimics/workout addicts/easily nauseated people
I heard of this great tip and actually tried it and it worked really well for stopping yourself from throwing up. I'm personally not bulimic but I do tend to push myself too hard when working out, sometimes to the point where I feel nauseated and I want to throw up just to feel better. The feeling seems to go away completely when you hold something cold, my favorite is an ice cube or a low calorie Popsicle on your tongue for a while. Just thought it'd help.
Alternatively try ginger... prepared as a tea, candied/crystallised, raw (if you can stand it). Ginger has an anti-nausea property which is very useful for combating morning sickness & car sickness. So it could work in other situations
Probably not a good idea to work out to the point of feeling sick in any case....
People with bulimia don't throw up because they feel sick. They throw up because they have an eating disorder and binge and purge as a way of coping with life. I don't think your tip is particularly helpful for either bulimics or exercise addicts - who should focus on working towards a normal, healthy lifestyle; not finding ways around nausea from over-exercising.
Actually I know a few bulimics who, after they got to their goal weight, couldn't stop throwing up, their body's had gotten so used to getting sick that food made them nauseated. It's actually quite common.
Bulimia doesn't denote body weight - you can be overweight, underweight or a healthy weight and have bulimia.
I think the food-gives-me-nausea thing is mostly mental. I have been in IP with a lot of bulimia patients, and I also know a lot of bulimia sufferers from outpatient clinics I have taken part in. In my experience nausea after eating was rare; most people who said this acknowledged it was nerves or anxiety giving them nausea, not the food itself. Certainly not something that could be fixed by holding an ice cube.
^ I've said this before but you can't be very underweight and have bulimia by current diagnostic criteria. the last criterion is 'patient is not currently experiencing an episode of anorexia nervosa' or something like that...so if they are ED'd and within the AN weight criteria that will be their diagnosis not bulimia. you can't have both diagnoses at once (altho I believe this should be possible)
anyway, I have experienced severe physical nausea and involuntary vomiting while recovering so thanks for this :) there is a psychological element but for me there's also the fact that I totally screwed up my stomach due to my ED.

I agree, you can't be very underweight - but you can certainly still be underweight. The diagnostic criteria... blah. I have a lot of issues with the way the criteria are currently set out. Obviously there needs to be some kind of criteria, but I think a lot of EDs are currently going misdiagnosed.
My anorexia turned into bulimia during recovery, but as I was gaining weight people refused to think I was doing anything except recovering until I had reached and sustained a healthy weight for long enough to be considered no longer anorexic. Only then did I have bulimia by medical standards.
^^ ah yeah I guess if you are underweight but not 'anorexic weight'...hadn't thought of that actually. could be a bit of a loophole there.
it's crap that people didn't believe you until you were 'diagnosable' with bulimia. that's vaguely similar to my complaint about it all...I fit the full diagnostic criteria for BOTH disorders except for that supposedly that's not possible and you can't have both! bizarre. ah well I guess it's fairly unimportant as the aim is to fit neither category ![]()
