I've run into a little snag.  I was at the Y to do my workout today.  Upon entering the exercise pool, I missed the 2nd step at the bottom and landed in the warer in a heck of a hurry ,and felt a terrible pain.  I managed to finish the acquafit,, because the water supports you.  I was fine in the afternoon and then at 4 p.m. I twisted my knee again.I was unable to walk, felt really ill, and started a cold sweat.  My vision became blurry and I thought I was going to faint.   The pain was all  because of the knee.  My friend called 911, and I went to the Emergency Room for an examination and X-ray which showed no fracture.  Unfortunately the doctor thinks that it is a ligament injury.  TI have a follow up on October 3rd, because  In the mean time I"m wearing a brace and was given a brace to wear and crutches.  This is going to impact my excercise schedule at the Y and my food diary.  A  local store delivers groceries and if I can stand on one foot, I can do some bulk cooking.  I'll find out the level of pain in the morning and whether there  is anyting I can do.  Ill give you an update tomorrow.  Tulip's mom.

That is a shame, Mary.  I understand knee pain.  You may need to adjust your calories lower a bit since you can't exercise.

But don't go so low that you quit.  Don't try to do too much too soon.  Ask your grocery delivery service to bring you some frozen lean dinners like healthy choice or lean cuisine so you can microwave some of your meals.  Add some salad and fruit.

Do you have anyone who can come in and help for a little while?

I'm just so sorry this happened to you.  Do be aware that your body may react to injury by holding on to fat for a while.  Kind of...oh dear, I'm hurt, I may need my fat because she can't go out and kill dinosaurs to eat.

That sucks so much.  I slipped while cleaning the shower back in April and it derailed me for 2 months.  I damaged one of the ligaments in my knee - it hurt so much that I thought I was going to throw up.

It was worse than when I hurt my knee playing football in high school, (which ultimately lead me to quit the sport).

In the past, I had been able to exercise enough to maintain at a crazy calorie intake of junk.  Anytime I'd get an injury, I'd gain while I recovered.

So this time around, I'm using a calorie goal to ensure that I will lose weight regardless of if I exercise.

Definitely look into cooking in bulk and even getting some easy to cook meals and snacks (I always have a healthy choice meal in the freezer for those rare times when I am totally out of ideas).  You can cook 6-8 chicken breasts, make taco meat out of lean ground beef or turkey, and so on.

The other good news is that you'll be able to get back in the water faster than I was able to get back on the elliptical.  Depending on how you are recovering, you should be able to wear your brace into the water and use the side of the pool for support.

Good luck

Thanks texmom52 and 67alecto.  Good advice from both of you.  Luckily the store around the corner has a delivery service, and I'll get some TV dinners as well as my usual.  67alecto you know exactly the pain I'm suffering and apparently you do too, texmom52.  I also almost threw up to.  At the hospital they gave me a shot of demarol and gravol, so that I ccould climb on the table for the X-rays.  I did utter a lot of "ows" from the time I got hurt.!  Unfortunately the meds left me with more nauseau.  Don't worry I am not go ing of my eating programme. I started out saying I'll be happy if Ilose 1 pound a week.  I never knew that you could wear the brace in the water, which means I'll be able to do something at the Y.  It's been very hard ro type these posts as Im still disoriented  .I'm very tired and need go to bed.  tulips mom.

Mary,

You can read this tomorrow.   I have had both knees replaced.  I understand knee pain.

Oh my gosh that is horrible! Thank goodness it wasn't worse - not that this is good itself.

Did you have a check up today ? Are you feeling any better maybe ?

Thanks kdh1221, I really appreciate your message.  I get a little low when I can't help myself.  I am using the crutches and have the brace on.  The brace holds my knee and leg straight.  The pain is manageable now, but the other things particularly the nauseau are still there.  Once before when I had a spiral compound fracture I had the same symptons in addition to the pain  of breaking my leg.  Go figure.  Because my leg was so swollen, the Dr. said he couldn't do anything yesterday, and therefore he made an appointment for me 2 weeks from now.  I feel quite tired and generally unwell, but I hope that will be gone in a few days.  So far so good with my eating, I've eaten less than usual, because I have no appetite.  Sorry no jokes today.  I'm plumb tuckered out.

Mary,

Using crutches is so taxing, especially since your arms are just not strong and a lot of your weight is carried by your arms.  I'm sure you will soon feel better, but don't be surprised if you suffer a scale setback (maybe not), but don't let it throw you.  It'll all work out in  the long run.

And don't go pitiful me eating when the nausea is past.  Be sure to eat well and take your vitamins.  Your body needs nutrition to heal well, especially calcium and protein and water.  And all your essential vitamins....

Hi texmom52 and everyone else.  Except for once last week,  before this set-back, I've been eating properly within my calorie allowance.  I take all my vitamins etc and I'm not letting this little set-back get the better of  me!  So far this morning, the nauseau has subsided which should give me some pep and energy.  It's still dark out, although a grey dawn appears to be rising.  The weather has been cold and rainy.  I think you're right, that the scale might not be kind to me on Monday, weigh-in day, because of my inactivity, but I would be happy to lose 1 pound, which has been  an acceptable weekly amount for me.  I've been much more motivated not to overeat since joining Calorie Count and reading posts and receiving messages.  I'm an emotional eater, and this satifies me instead.  My brekkie is all planned out.  I make a large dish of steel cut oats, in the microwave, and that lasts me 3 to 4 days.  Since I like my porridge stiff and chewy, that works for me.  Then by adding skim milk and some fruit, presto! breakfast has been had.  Best I go and hack some pieces out of the porridge to heat and eat.  Bye for now.

Mary,

You don't make it sound appetizing.  I am thinking oatmeal, fruit, sugar substitute...that is cobbler.

Good stuff.  When we make oatmeal, we use our rice cooker as we can program it to be ready when we wake up.

If anyone is a fan of crockpots, I highly recommend rice cookers as the next step.  I personally had no idea you used them for other things, but we make everything from oatmeal to paella with shrimp and crab in it.
