Lo-cal Coffee Options - light and sweet

Quote  |  Reply

I love coffee in the mornings (light and sweet.) Before starting CC, I used to LOAD up on the fattening creams and sugars. I'm pretty sure that once I added everything, my average moring coffee was well over 200 calories! YIKES!  So, I have been finding lower calorie options so that I can still have my coffee and drink it too. Anyone else have some lo-cal coffee options to share? Here are mine:

General Foods International "On the Go Vanilla Latte" packets. (They are sugar free.) Mix one packet with about 16 oz of coffee - it makes it nice and sweet, light in color, even a little frothy on top for only 64 calories. (3 g of fat, 3 g saturated fat, 45 mg sodium, 7g carbohydrate, 0 sugars, <1g protein and 10% of daily calcium requirement.)

General Foods International "French Vanilla Cafe" Sugar free coffee drink mix. Mix 2 and 2/3 Tbs drink mix with about 16 oz coffee. I also add a couple packets of splenda b/c this one isn't quite sweet enough for me. Total calories 64. (5 g of fat, 4 g saturated fat, 100 mg sodium, 4g carbohydrate, 0 sugars, 0 protein.)

McDonalds - Large Iced coffee (32oz.) with Sugar free vanilla syrup and 1 cup of fat free milk. Total calories = around 90. I'm not sure of all the other stats on this one. I just enter it as 32 oz of filter coffee, 3 servings of sugar free vanilla syrup and 1 cup of fat free milk. CC - calculates it all out for me.

I switched to black.  For some reason my husband thinks it's great (?), but I don't enjoy it as much so I drink less.  Sigh.  I really loved my coffee.

Your post reminds me of one of the reasons I gave up coffee cold turkey.  I used to have my Tim Horton's "XL Double Double" (two cream, two sugar) every morning.  Then I checked it out on their website.  280 calories, 14g of fat, 34g of sugar.  I don't think I've had another one since. :)

If you don't like the taste of your coffee black, try making better tasting coffee. Most of us don't really make good coffee.  Google "alton brown coffee" for his tips.

I love flavored coffee with skim milk & splenda.. (yes i know artificial sweetner is bad for you but i need some sweetness to my coffee)... at work there usually is full fat milk only, so thats when i'll have it black w/ splenda.

I make my coffee with a packet of Nestle's instant hot chocolate.  It's only 80 calories and makes a great mocha.

I like to buy the 25 cal packets of nestle fat free hot chocolate. I will make my own coffee at home. Sometime I will add a packet of the ff hot chocolate, splenda and like a serving of coffee creamer to my coffee and its pretty good. Not really light but its cheap.

Hey - I hadn't checked out any hot chocolate mixes. That's a good idea. Thanks for the suggestions flonklar and fooledbyfaith!

I hate artificial sweetners - the way they taste and just that they are artificial. I prefer to use real milk and sugar (preferably raw) and just use less of both. I set aside 100 calories a day so I can have a few cups of tea (just milk) or coffee (milk and a half tsp of sugar) and not worry about using the fake stuff.

It took me a while but I got very used to Splenda.  Now I feel like it is a god send.  I also gave up half n half in favor of 2% milk.  It is not as watery as skim but by measuring my portions I can have a decent few cups a day.

Buy better coffee is also an excellent suggestion.  Better flavor helps a lot.

But right now my personal cold drink is Starbucks iced coffee with non-fat milk and splenda.  It is only 35 cals for a grande and 50 for a venti.  Order it "non-fat, no sweetener", otherwise they put in their own sweetener.  If you say "sugar free", the sweetener still has 90 cals!  Put in your own.

When I'm out, I order a Tim Hortons Medium 1 cream 1 sweetener, 40 cals. I used to be a dbl dbl girl but then I found out it was 120 and I'd easily drink 3 in one day. It was hard to get used to the switch but I don't think I could go back now that I have. I occasionally treat myself to a Starbucks grande skinny caramel macciatto, 120 cals.

When I'm at home I drink it with 1T of low fat Hazelnut cream (30cals) and 1 sweetener.

 I do the same thing!

My  morning mug:

1/2 cup non-fat milk, Microwave 1 minute,

1 - 1.5 cups brewed dark roast coffee,

sweeten to taste

Yum!

I use stevia if I just want black coffee with a little sweet, otherwise we are using Coffee Mate Sugar Free liquid creamer. Good Stuff.

On Sunday's I generally add a packet of Vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast to a gallon of Powdered Milk (88 Calories a cup) each morning I will warm up a cup of milk and add 16 oz of coffee. It's far cry from my usual Starbuck's Vanilla Latte ... but it does the trick.

P.S. Met my husband at Starbucks :)

I add about 1/4 cup of unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze.  Gives it a creaminess that milk doesn't and a nice vanilla flavour.

Stevia Natural Sweetener (0 calories, 0 fat, 0 cholesterol, 0 carbs, 0 protein)

They offer a variety of flavors. I have not tried them, so I don't know if they taste as bad as the artificial sweeteners.  I think their site is actually Stevia (.) com.

Thanks.  I'll have a look.

At home: Hazelnut coffee with 1/2 cup fat free milk (45 cals) and 2 tbsp sugar free syrup (hazelnut, vanilla or caramel -- 0 cals, from Target).

Starbucks: They have started to do a "skinny latte" (easier than having to say "non-fat milk, with sugar free syrup" like I used to...) my fave is the Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte (160 cals for a venti, 120 grande, 90 tall -- you can calculate nutrition really comprehensively on Starbucks website). Most big coffee houses have an equivalent, just be sure to ask what syrups they have in sugar free...

Ugh why do so many people like artificial sweetners, syrups and flavourings? I think coffee in my part of the world is very different to the US. I'd never touch a Starbucks with a bargepole. A bucket of milk with espresso shots in the bottom of it does not equal a good coffee!

i love french roast. strong. black. i dont want anything tainting the flavor of my coffee.

whats the point of good fresh coffee if you just dump a bunch of junk in it? ;)
